'Brothers' in the Bible
Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers [who became the twelve tribes of Israel].
Josiah became the father of Jeconiah [also called Coniah and Jehoiachin] and his brothers, at the time of the deportation (exile) to Babylon.
As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He noticed two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.
And going on [further] from there He noticed two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets; and He called them [to follow Him as His disciples].
While He was still talking to the crowds, it happened that His mother and brothers stood outside, asking to speak to Him.
Someone said to Him, “Look! Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside asking to speak to You.”
But Jesus replied to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?”
And stretching out His hand toward His disciples [and all His other followers], He said, “Here are My mother and My brothers!
Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary? And are not His brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?
And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name’s sake will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life.
And when the [other] ten heard this, they were resentful and angry with the two brothers.
Now there were seven brothers among us; the first married and died, and having no children left his wife to his brother.
But do not be called Rabbi (Teacher); for One is your Teacher, and you are all [equally] brothers.
Then His mother and His brothers arrived, and standing outside they sent word to Him and called for Him.
A crowd was sitting around Him, and they said to Him, “Look! Your mother and Your brothers are outside asking for You.”
And He replied, “Who are My mother and My brothers?”
Looking at those who were sitting in a circle around Him, He said, “Here are My mother and My brothers!
Jesus said, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, there is no one who has given up a house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel’s sake,
who will not receive a hundred times as much now in the present age—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms—along with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life.
There were seven brothers; the first [one] took a wife, and died leaving no children.
Then Jesus’ mother and His brothers came up toward Him, but they could not reach Him because of the crowd.
And He was told, “Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, asking to see You.”
But He answered, “My mother and My brothers are these who listen to the word of God and do it!”
Jesus also went on to say to the one who had invited Him, “When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or wealthy neighbors, otherwise they may also invite you in return and that will be your repayment.
“If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life [in the sense of indifference to or relative disregard for them in comparison with his attitude toward God]—he cannot be My disciple.
for I have five brothers—in order that he may solemnly warn them and witness to them, so that they too will not come to this place of torment.’
And He said to them, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God,
Now there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife and died childless.
But you will be betrayed and handed over even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death,
After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother and brothers and His disciples; and they stayed there a few days.
So His brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to Judea, so that Your disciples [there] may also see the works that You do.
For not even His brothers believed in Him.
But [afterward], when His brothers had gone up to the feast, He went up too, not publicly [with a caravan], but quietly [because He did not want to be noticed].
All these with one mind and one purpose were continually devoting themselves to prayer, [waiting together] along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.
And on the second visit Joseph identified himself to his brothers, and Joseph’s family and background were revealed to Pharaoh.
At the end of three months we set sail on a ship which had wintered at the island, an Alexandrian ship with the Twin Brothers [Castor and Pollux] as its figurehead.
Have we not the right to take along with us a believing wife, as do the rest of the apostles and the Lord’s brothers and Cephas (Peter)?
So then, my brothers and sisters, when you come together to eat [the Lord’s Supper], wait for one another [and see to it that no one is left out].
Do not sharply reprimand an older man, but appeal to him as [you would to] a father, to younger men as brothers,
Those who have believing masters are not to be disrespectful toward them because they are brothers [in Christ], but they should serve them even better, because those who benefit from their kindly service are believers and beloved. Teach and urge these [duties and principles].
By this we know [and have come to understand the depth and essence of His precious] love: that He [willingly] laid down His life for us [because He loved us]. And we ought to lay down our lives for the believers.
