‘Vengeance is Mine, and retribution,In due time their foot will slip;For the day of their calamity is near,And the impending things are hastening upon them.’

David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem, “Arise and let us flee, for otherwise none of us will escape from Absalom. Go in haste, or he will overtake us quickly and bring down calamity on us and strike the city with the edge of the sword.”

If a trumpet is blown in a city will not the people tremble?If a calamity occurs in a city has not the Lord done it?

Do you put off the day of calamity,And would you bring near the seat of violence?

When God saw their deeds, that they turned from their wicked way, then God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would bring upon them. And He did not do it.

He prayed to the Lord and said, “Please Lord, was not this what I said while I was still in my own country? Therefore in order to forestall this I fled to Tarshish, for I knew that You are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, and one who relents concerning calamity.

For the inhabitant of MarothBecomes weak waiting for good,Because a calamity has come down from the LordTo the gate of Jerusalem.

Therefore thus says the Lord,“Behold, I am planning against this family a calamityFrom which you cannot remove your necks;And you will not walk haughtily,For it will be an evil time.
