'Works' in the Bible
In the [same] way let your light shine before people, so that they can see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything that he himself is doing. And greater works than these he will show him, so that you will be astonished.
"But I have a testimony greater than John's, for the works which the Father has given to me that I should complete them--the very works which I am doing--[these] testify about me, that the Father has sent me.
So they said to him, "What shall we do that we can accomplish the works of God?"
So his brothers said to him, "Depart from here and go to Judea, so that your disciples also can see your works that you are doing.
Jesus replied, "Neither this man sinned nor his parents, but [it happened] so that the works of God could be revealed in him.
Do you not believe that I [am] in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak from myself, but the Father residing in me does his works.
Believe me that I [am] in the Father and the Father [is] in me; but if not, believe because of the works themselves.
Truly, truly I say to you, the one who believes in me, the works that I am doing he will do also, and he will do greater [works] than these because I am going to the Father.
If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not have sin. But now they have both seen and hated both me and my Father.
And they manufactured a calf in those days, and offered up a sacrifice to the idol, and began rejoicing in the works of their hands.
For by the works of the law {no person will be declared righteous} before him, for through the law [comes] knowledge of sin.
Therefore, where [is] boasting? It has been excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith.
For we consider a person to be justified by faith apart from the works of the law.
For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.
Now to the one who works, his pay is not credited according to grace, but according to his due.
just as David also speaks about the blessing of the person to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
not by works but by the one who calls--it was said to her, "The older will serve the younger,"
Why that? Because [they did] not [pursue it] by faith, but as [if] by works. They stumbled over the {stone that causes people to stumble},
But if by grace, [it is] no longer by works, for otherwise grace would no longer be grace.
and there are varieties of activities, but the same God, who works all [things] in all [people].
but knowing that a person is not justified by the works of the law, if not by faith in Jesus Christ, and we have believed in Christ Jesus so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law {no human being will be justified}.
I want only to learn this from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
Therefore does the one who gives you the Spirit and who works miracles among you [do so] by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse, for it is written, "Cursed [is] everyone who does not abide by all [the things] that are written in the book of the law to do them."
in whom also we were chosen, having been predestined according to the purpose of the One who works all [things] according to the counsel of his will,
For we are his creation, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, so that we may walk in them.
being well-attested by good works, if she has brought up children, if she has shown hospitality, if she has washed the feet of the saints, if she has helped those who are oppressed, if she has devoted herself to every good work.
Likewise also good works [are] evident, and those considered otherwise are not able to be hidden.
to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous, sharing freely,
who saved us and called [us] with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace that was given to us in Christ Jesus {before time began},
The farmer who works hard must [be] the first to receive a share of the crops.
And, "You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the works of your hands;
where your fathers tested [me] by trial and saw my works
For we who have believed enter into rest, just as he has said, "As I swore in my anger, '{They will never enter} into my rest.'" And yet these works have been accomplished from the foundation of the world.
For he has spoken somewhere about the seventh [day] in this way: "And God rested on the seventh day from all his works,"
For the one who has entered into his rest has also himself rested from his works, just as God [did] from his own [works].
Therefore, leaving behind the elementary message about Christ, let us move on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and faith in God,
how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works to serve [the] living God?
And let us think about {how to stir one another up to love} and good works,
What [is] the benefit, my brothers, if someone says [that he] has faith but does not have works? That faith [is] not able to save him, [is it]?
Thus also faith, if it does not have works, is dead by itself.
But someone will say, "You have faith and I have works." Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
But do you want to know, O foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless?
Was not Abraham our father justified by works [when he] offered up his son Isaac on the altar?
You see that faith was working together with his works, and by the works the faith was perfected.
You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.
And likewise was not Rahab the prostitute also justified by works [when she] welcomed the messengers and sent [them] out by a different route?
For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
Who [is] wise and understanding among you? Let him show by his good behavior his works, with the humility of wisdom.
The one who practices sin is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. For this [reason] the Son of God was revealed: in order to destroy the works of the devil.
'I know your works, and your labor and patient endurance, and that you are not able to tolerate evil, and you put to the test those who call themselves apostles and are not, and you found them [to be] false.
Remember therefore from where you have fallen, and repent and do {the works you did at first}. But if you do not, I am coming to you, and I will remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.
'I know your works, and your love, and faith, and service, and patient endurance--and your last works [are] greater than the first.
And the one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, I will give him authority over the nations,
"And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: "This is what the one who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars says: 'I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, and you are dead.
Be on the alert and strengthen the remaining [things] that are about to die, for I have not found your works completed before my God.
'I know your works (behold, I have put before you an opened door that no one is able to shut) that you have a little strength, and have kept my word, and did not deny my name.
'I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were cold or hot!
And the rest of humanity who were not killed by these plagues did not repent of the works of their hands, {in order not to worship} the demons and the gold and silver and bronze and stone and wooden idols, which are able neither to see nor to hear nor to walk,
And they were singing the song of Moses, the slave of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying: "Great and marvelous [are] your works, Lord God All-Powerful; righteous and true [are] your ways, King of the ages!
