Jesus answered, "The first is: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord.

Therefore concerning the eating of food sacrificed to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no God but one.

This was to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over sins committed beforehand; and it was to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
