God's People Brought Home

7 For thus sayeth the LORD, "Rejoice with gladness because of Jacob, cry unto the head of the Gentiles: speak out, sing, and say, 'The LORD shall deliver his people, the remnant of Israel, and make them whole.'

7 For thus says the Lord,(L)Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob,And shout among the (e)(M)chief of the nations;Proclaim, give praise and say,‘O Lord, (N)save Your people,The (O)remnant of Israel.’

7 For thus saith the LORD; Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout among the chief of the nations: publish ye, praise ye, and say, O LORD, save thy people, the remnant of Israel.

9 (T)With weeping they will come,And by supplication I will lead them;I will make them walk by (U)streams of waters,On a straight path in which they will (V)not stumble; For I am a (W)father to Israel,And Ephraim is (X)My firstborn.”

10 "Hear the word of the LORD, O ye Gentiles; preach in the Isles that lie far off, and say, 'He that hath scattered Israel, shall gather him together again, and shall keep him as a shepherd doth his flock.'

10 Hear the word of the Lord, O nations,And declare in the (Y)coastlands afar off,And say, “He who scattered Israel will (Z)gather himAnd keep him as a (AA)shepherd keeps his flock.”

10 Hear the word of the LORD, O ye nations, and declare it in the isles afar off, and say, He that scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as a shepherd doth his flock.

10 Nations, hear the word of the Lord, and tell it among the far off coastlands!(L)Say: The One who scattered Israel will gather him.He will watch over him as a shepherd guards his flock,

10 Nations, listen to this message from the LORD, and declare it in the distant coastlands. Say, "The one who scattered Israel will gather him and keep him as a shepherd keeps his flock."

11 For the LORD shall redeem Jacob, and rid him from the hand of the violent.

11 For the Lord has (AB)ransomed JacobAnd redeemed him from the hand of him who was (AC)stronger than he.

11 For the LORD hath redeemed Jacob, and ransomed him from the hand of him that was stronger than he.

11 for the Lord has ransomed Jacoband redeemed him from the power of one stronger than he.(M)

11 For the LORD will deliver Jacob and redeem him from the hand of one stronger than he.

12 And they shall come, and rejoice upon the hill of Zion, and shall have plenteousness of goods, which the LORD shall give them: Namely, wheat, wine, oil, young sheep and calves. And their conscience shall be as a well-watered garden, for they shall no more be hungry.

12 “They will (AD)come and shout for joy on the (AE)height of Zion,And they will be (AF)radiant over the (g)bounty of the LordOver the (AG)grain and the new wine and the oil,And over the young of the (AH)flock and the herd; And their life will be like a (AI)watered garden,And they will (AJ)never languish again.

12 Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the LORD, for wheat, and for wine, and for oil, and for the young of the flock and of the herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all.

12 They will come and shout for joy on the heights of Zion;they will be radiant with joy(N)because of(O) the Lord’s goodness, because of the grain, the new wine, the fresh oil,(P)and because of the young of the flocks and herds.Their life will be like an irrigated garden, and they will no longer grow weak from hunger.

13 Then shall the maid rejoice in the dance, yea both young and old folks. For I will turn their sorrow into gladness, and will comfort them and make them joyful, even from their hearts.

13 “Then the virgin will rejoice in the (AK)dance,And the young men and the old, together,For I will (AL)turn their mourning into joyAnd will comfort them and give them (AM)joy for their sorrow.

13 Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together: for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.

13 Then the young woman will rejoice with dancing, while young and old men rejoice together.I will turn their mourning into joy,(Q)give them consolation, and bring happiness out of grief.

13 The virgins will rejoice with dancing, together with young men and old men. For I'll turn their mourning into joy, and I'll comfort them and give them gladness instead of sorrow.

14 I will pour plenteousness upon the hearts of the priests, and my people shall be satisfied with good things, sayeth the LORD."

14 “I will (h)fill the soul of the priests with (i)abundance,And My people will be (AN)satisfied with My goodness,” declares the Lord.

14 And I will satiate the soul of the priests with fatness, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, saith the LORD.

14 I will refresh the priests with an abundance,(c)(R)and My people will be satisfied with My goodness. This is the Lord’s declaration.

14 I'll give the priests abundant provisions, and my people will be satisfied with my goodness," declares the LORD.

Lament Turned To Joy

15 Thus sayeth the LORD, "The voice of heaviness, weeping and lamentation was heard on the hills; even of Rachel mourning for her children, and would not be comforted, because they were not."

15 Thus says the Lord,(AO)A voice is heard in (AP)Ramah,Lamentation and bitter weeping.Rachel is weeping for her children; She (AQ)refuses to be comforted for her children,Because (AR)they are no more.”

15 Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not.

15 This is what the Lord says:A voice was heard in Ramah,a lament with bitter weeping—Rachel weeping for her children, refusing to be comforted for her childrenbecause they are no more.(S)

15 This is what the LORD says: "A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter crying. Rachel is crying, and she refuses to be comforted for her children, because they are no longer alive."

16 But now sayeth the LORD, "Leave off from weeping, and crying, withhold thine eyes from tears, for thy labour shall be rewarded, sayeth the LORD. And they shall come again out of the land of their enemies:

16 Thus says the Lord,(AS)Restrain your voice from weepingAnd your eyes from tears; For your (AT)work will be rewarded,” declares the Lord,“And they will (AU)return from the land of the enemy.

16 Thus saith the LORD; Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears: for thy work shall be rewarded, saith the LORD; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy.

16 This is what the Lord says:Keep your voice from weepingand your eyes from tears, for the reward for your work will come—this is the Lord’s declaration—and your children will return from the enemy’s land.

16 This is what the LORD says: "Restrain your voice from crying, and your eyes from tears, for there is a reward for your work," declares the LORD. "They'll return from the enemy's land.

17 Yea, even thy posterity shall have consolation in this, sayeth the LORD, that thy children shall come again into their own land.

17 “There is (AV)hope for your future,” declares the Lord,“And your children will return to their own territory.

17 And there is hope in thine end, saith the LORD, that thy children shall come again to their own border.

17 There is hope for your future(T)this is the Lord’s declaration—and your children will return to their own territory.

17 There is hope for your future," declares the LORD. "Your children will return to their own territory."

18 Moreover, I heard Ephraim, that was led away captive, complain on this manner, 'O LORD, thou hast corrected me, and thy chastening have I received, as an untamed calf. Convert thou me, and I shall be converted, for thou art my LORD God.

18 “I have surely heard Ephraim (AW)grieving,‘You have (AX)chastised me, and I was chastised,Like an untrained (AY)calf;(AZ)Bring me back that I may be restored,For You are the Lord my God.

18 I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the LORD my God.

18 I have heard Ephraim moaning,“You disciplined me, and I have been disciplinedlike an untrained calf.Restore me, and I will return, for you, Lord, are my God.(U)

18 "I've certainly heard Ephraim shuddering with grief as they said, "You have disciplined me, and I'm disciplined like an untrained calf. Restore me, and let me return, for you are the LORD my God.

19 Yea, as soon as thou turnest me, I shall reform myself: and when I understand, I shall smite upon my thigh. For verily I have committed shameful things: O let my youth bear this reproof and confusion.'

19 ‘For after I turned back, I (BA)repented; And after I was instructed, I (BB)smote on my thigh;I was (BC)ashamed and also humiliatedBecause I bore the reproach of my youth.’

19 Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.

19 After I returned, I repented; After I was instructed, I struck my thigh in grief.(V)I was ashamed and humiliatedbecause I bore the disgrace of my youth.”

19 Indeed, after I turned away, then I repented. And after I came to understand, I slapped my forehead. I was both ashamed and humiliated because I bear the disgrace of my youth.'"

20 Upon this complaint, I thought thus by myself: Is not Ephraim my dear son? Is he not the child, with whom I have had all mirth and pastime? For since the time that I first communed with him, I have him ever in remembrance: therefore my very heart driveth me unto him; gladly and lovingly will I have mercy upon him, sayeth the LORD.

20 “Is (BD)Ephraim My dear son?Is he a delightful child?Indeed, as often as I have spoken against him,I certainly still remember him; Therefore My (j)(BE)heart yearns for him;I will surely (BF)have mercy on him,” declares the Lord.

20 Is Ephraim my dear son? is he a pleasant child? for since I spake against him, I do earnestly remember him still: therefore my bowels are troubled for him; I will surely have mercy upon him, saith the LORD.

20 Isn’t Ephraim a precious son to Me,a delightful child?Whenever I speak against him,I certainly still think about him. Therefore, My inner being yearns for him;I will truly have compassion on him. This is the Lord’s declaration.

20 "Is Ephraim my dear son? Is he a darling child? Indeed, as often as I've spoken about him, I surely still remember him. Therefore I deeply yearn for him. I'll surely have great compassion on him," declares the LORD.

Repentance And Restoration

21 Get the watchman, provide teachers for thee: set thine heart upon the right way, that thou shouldest walk, and turn again, O thou daughter of Israel; turn again to these cities of thine.

21 “Set up for yourself roadmarks,Place for yourself guideposts;(BG)Direct your (k)mind to the highway,The way by which you went.(BH)Return, O virgin of Israel,Return to these your cities.

21 Set thee up waymarks, make thee high heaps: set thine heart toward the highway, even the way which thou wentest: turn again, O virgin of Israel, turn again to these thy cities.

21 Set up road markers(W) for yourself;establish signposts!Keep the highway in mind, the way you have traveled.Return, Virgin Israel!Return to these cities of yours.

21 Set up markers for yourselves. Erect signposts for yourselves. Pay attention to the highway, to the road you traveled. Return, virgin Israel, return to these cities of yours.

22 How long wilt thou go astray, O thou shrinking daughter? For the LORD will work a new thing upon earth: A woman shall compass a man.

22 “How long will you go here and there,O (BI)faithless daughter? For the Lord has created a new thing in the earth—A woman will encompass a man.”

22 How long wilt thou go about, O thou backsliding daughter? for the LORD hath created a new thing in the earth, A woman shall compass a man.

22 How long will you turn here and there, faithless daughter?(X)For the Lord creates something new in the land(d)a female(e) will shelter(f) a man.

22 How long will you go this way and that, rebellious daughter? Indeed, the LORD will create a new thing on the earth; a woman will protect a man.

The Future Prosperity Of God's People

23 For thus sayeth the LORD of Hosts the God of Israel: It will come thereto, that when I have brought Judah out of captivity, these words shall be heard in the land and in his cities, 'The LORD, which is the fair bridegroom of righteousness, make thee fruitful O thou holy hill!'

23 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “Once again they will speak this word in the land of Judah and in its cities when I (BJ)restore their (l)fortunes,‘The Lord bless you, O (BK)abode of righteousness,O (BL)holy hill!’

23 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; As yet they shall use this speech in the land of Judah and in the cities thereof, when I shall bring again their captivity; The LORD bless thee, O habitation of justice, and mountain of holiness.

23 This is what the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: “When I restore their fortunes,(g) they will once again speak this word in the land of Judah and in its cities, ‘May the Lord bless you, righteous settlement,(Y) holy mountain.’(Z)

23 This is what the LORD of the Heavenly Armies, the God of Israel, says: "They'll again speak this message in the land of Judah and its towns when I restore their fortunes: "The LORD bless you, righteous dwelling, holy mountain.'

24 And there shall dwell Judah, and all her cities, the shepherds and husbandmen:

24 Judah and all its cities will (BM)dwell together in it, the farmer and they who go about with flocks.

24 And there shall dwell in Judah itself, and in all the cities thereof together, husbandmen, and they that go forth with flocks.

24 Judah and all its cities will live in it together—also farmers and those who move(h) with the flocks—

24 Judah and all its towns will live together in the land, along with farmers and those who follow the flock.

25 For I shall feed the hungry soul, and refresh all faint hearts."

25 (BN)For I satisfy the weary ones and (m)refresh everyone who languishes.”

25 For I have satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every sorrowful soul.

25 for I satisfy the thirsty person and feed all those who are weak.”

25 I'll provide abundance for those who are weary, and fill all who are faint."

26 When I heard this, I came again to myself, and mused, like as I had been waked out of a sweet sleep.

26 At this I (BO)awoke and looked, and my (BP)sleep was pleasant to me.

26 Upon this I awaked, and beheld; and my sleep was sweet unto me.

26 At this I awoke and looked around. My sleep had been most pleasant to me.

26 Then I awoke and looked around, and I had had a pleasant sleep.

The New Covenant

27 "Behold, sayeth the LORD, the days come, that I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with men and with cattle.

27 “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will (BQ)sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man and with the seed of beast.

27 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man, and with the seed of beast.

27 “The days are coming”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“when I will sow the house of Israel(AA) and the house of Judah with the seed of man and the seed of beast.

27 "Look, days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I'll sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah using people and animals as seed.

28 Yea it shall come thereto, that like as I have gone about in times past to root them out, to scatter them, to break them down, to destroy them and chasten them: Even so will I also go diligently about, to build them up again, and to plant them, sayeth the LORD.

28 As I have (BR)watched over them to (BS)pluck up, to break down, to overthrow, to destroy and to bring disaster, so I will watch over them to (BT)build and to plant,” declares the Lord.

28 And it shall come to pass, that like as I have watched over them, to pluck up, and to break down, and to throw down, and to destroy, and to afflict; so will I watch over them, to build, and to plant, saith the LORD.

28 Just as I watched over them to uproot and to tear them down, to demolish and to destroy, and to cause disaster, so will I be attentive to build and to plant them,”(AB) says the Lord.

28 Just as I've watched over them to pull up, tear down, overthrow, destroy, and bring disaster, so I'll watch over them to build and to plant," declares the LORD.

29 Then shall it no more be said, 'The fathers have eaten a sour grape, and the children's teeth are set on edge.'

29 “In those days they will not say again,(BU)The fathers have eaten sour grapes,And the children’s teeth are (n)set on edge.’

29 In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten a sour grape, and the children's teeth are set on edge.

29 “In those days, it will never again be said:The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.(AC)

29 "In those days people will no longer say, "The fathers have eaten sour grapes, but the children's teeth have been set on edge.'

30 For every one shall die for his own misdeed, so that who so eateth a sour grape, his teeth shall be set on edge.

30 But (BV)everyone will die for his own iniquity; each man who eats the sour grapes, his teeth will be (o)set on edge.

30 But every one shall die for his own iniquity: every man that eateth the sour grape, his teeth shall be set on edge.

30 Rather, each will die for his own wrongdoing.(AD) Anyone who eats sour grapes—his own teeth will be set on edge.

30 Instead, each person will die for his own iniquity. Everyone who eats sour grapes will have his own teeth set on edge."

The New Promise

31 Behold, the days come, sayeth the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:

31 (BW)Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a (BX)new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,

31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

31 “Look, the days are coming”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“when I will make a new covenant(AE) with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.

31 "Look, days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I'll make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah.

32 not after the covenant that I made with their fathers, when I took them by the hand, and led them out of the land of Egypt: which covenant they brake, wherefore I punished them sore, sayeth the LORD:

32 not like the (BY)covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I (BZ)took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My (CA)covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord.

32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:

32 This one will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant they broke even though I had married them”(AF)—the Lord’s declaration.

32 It won't be like the covenant I made with their ancestors on the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. They broke my covenant, although I was a husband to them," declares the LORD.

33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, sayeth the LORD: I will plant my law in the inward parts of them, and write it in their hearts, and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

33 “But (CB)this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord, “(CC)I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and (CD)I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

33 “Instead, this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days”—the Lord’s declaration. “I will put My teaching within them and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be My people.

33 "Rather, this is the covenant that I'll make with the house of Israel after those days," declares the LORD. "I'll put my Law within them and will write it on their hearts. I'll be their God and they will be my people.

34 And from thenceforth shall no man teach his neighbour or his brother, and say, 'Know the LORD.' But they shall all know me, from the lowest unto the highest, sayeth the LORD. For I will forgive their misdeeds, and will never remember their sins anymore.

34 They will (CE)not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all (CF)know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares the Lord, “for I will (CG)forgive their iniquity, and their (CH)sin I will remember no more.”

34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

34 No longer will one teach his neighbor or his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’(AG) for they will all know Me, from the least to the greatest of them”—this is the Lord’s declaration. “For I will forgive their wrongdoing(AH) and never again remember their sin.”(AI)

34 No longer will a person teach his neighbor or his relative: "Know the LORD.' Instead, they'll all know me, from the least to the greatest of them," declares the LORD. "Indeed, I'll forgive their iniquity, and I'll remember their sin no more."

The Lord Will Never Leave Israel

35 "Thus sayeth the LORD which gave the sun to be a light for the day, and the moon and stars to shine in the night: which moveth the sea, so that the floods thereof wax fierce: his name is the LORD of Hosts.

35 Thus says the Lord,Who (CI)gives the sun for light by dayAnd the (p)fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night,Who (CJ)stirs up the sea so that its waves roar;(CK)The Lord of hosts is His name:

35 Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hosts is his name:

35 This is what the Lord says:The One who gives the sun for light by day,the fixed order of moon and stars for light by night, who stirs up the sea and makes its waves roar(AJ)Yahweh of Hosts is His name:

35 This is what the LORD says, who gives the sun for light by day, the laws that govern the moon and stars for light by night, and who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar. The LORD of the Heavenly Armies is his name:

36 Like as this ordinance shall never be taken out of my sight, sayeth the LORD: So shall the seed of Israel never cease, but always be a people before me.

36 (CL)If (q)this fixed order departsFrom before Me,” declares the Lord,“Then the offspring of Israel also will (CM)ceaseFrom being a nation before Me (r)forever.”

36 If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever.

37 Thus saith the LORD; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the LORD.

37 This is what the Lord says:If the heavens above can be measuredand the foundations of the earth below explored,I will reject all of Israel’s descendantsbecause of all they have done—this is the Lord’s declaration.

37 This is what the LORD says: "If the heavens could be measured above, or the foundations of the earth be searched out below, then I also would reject all the descendants of Israel because of everything they have done," declares the LORD.
