1 Unto GOD, can a man act as friend? Surely a discreet man befriendeth himself!

1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite (a)responded,

1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:

1 Then in response, Eliphaz from Teman said:

2 Is it a pleasure to the Almighty, that thou shouldst be righteous? or any profit, that thou shouldst be blameless in thy ways?

2 Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself?

2 “Can a vigorous (A)man be of use to God,Or a wise man be useful to himself?

2 Can a man be of any use to God?Can even a wise man be of use to Him?

2 "Can a human being be useful to God, since he, who is wise, is sufficient to himself?

3 Is it, for thy reverence, that he will accuse thee? will enter with thee into judgment?

3 Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect?

3 “Is there any pleasure to (b)the Almighty if you are righteous,Or profit if you make your ways perfect?

3 Does it delight the Almighty if you are righteous?Does He profit if you perfect your behavior?(A)

3 Will it please the Almighty if you are innocent, or does he profit if your life is blameless?

4 Is not, thy wickedness, great? and, without end, are not thine iniquities?

4 Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment?

4 “Is it because of your (c)reverence that He reproves you,That He (B)enters into judgment against you?

4 Does He correct you and take you to courtbecause of your piety?(B)

4 Will he acquit you just because you fear him, and render a verdict on your behalf?

5 Surely then hast been wont to put thy brother in pledge, for nothing, and, the garments of the ill-clad, hast thou stripped off:

5 Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite?

5 “Is not (C)your wickedness great,And your iniquities without end?

5 Isn’t your wickedness abundantand aren’t your iniquities endless?

5 Your wickedness is great, isn't it? There's no limit to your iniquity, is there?

6 No water - to the weary, hast thou given to drink, and, from the hungry, thou hast withheld broad:

6 For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.

6 “For you have (D)taken pledges of your brothers without cause,And (E)stripped (d)men naked.

6 For you took collateral(C) from your brothers without cause, stripping off their clothes and leaving them naked.

6 "After all, you've taken collateral from your relatives for no reason; you stripped the naked of their clothing.

7 A man of might, to him, pertaineth the land, and, the favorite, dwelleth therein:

7 Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.

7 “To the weary you have (F)given no water to drink,And from the hungry you have (G)withheld bread.

7 You gave no water to the thirstyand withheld food from the famished,(D)

7 You've neglected to give water to the weary, and you've withheld food from the hungry.

8 Widows, thou hast sent away empty, and, the arms of the fatherless, thou dost crush.

8 But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.

8 “But the earth (H)belongs to the (I)mighty man,And (J)the honorable man dwells in it.

8 while the land belonged to a powerful manand an influential man lived on it.

8 The land belongs to the powerful, and the privileged thrive in it.

9 For this cause, round about thee, are snares, and a dread startleth thee suddenly;

9 Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

9 “You have sent (K)widows away empty,And the (e)strength of the (L)orphans has been crushed.

9 You sent widows away empty-handed,and the strength of the fatherless(E) was(a) crushed.

9 You sent away widows empty-handed, and broke the outstretched arms of orphans.

10 Or darkness - thou canst not see, and, a flood of waters, covereth thee.

10 Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;

10 “Therefore (M)snares surround you,And sudden (N)dread terrifies you,

10 Therefore snares surround you,and sudden dread terrifies(F) you,

10 That's why disaster surrounds you, terror suddenly overwhelms you,

11 Is not, GOD, in the height of the heavens? Behold, then, the head of the stars, that they are high.

11 Or darkness, that thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee.

11 Or (O)darkness, so that you cannot see,And an (P)abundance of water covers you.

11 or darkness, so you cannot see,and a flood of water covers you.(G)

11 you see nothing but darkness, and a flood of troubles drowns you."

12 Wilt thou say then, What doth GOD know? Out through a thick cloud, can he judge?

12 Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are!

12 “Is not God (Q)in the height of heaven?Look also at the (f)distant stars, how high they are!

12 Isn’t God as high as the heavens? And look at the highest stars—how lofty they are!

12 "Isn't God in heaven above? Consider how far away the stars are, and how lofty they are!

13 Dark clouds, are a veil to him, and he cannot see, or, the vault of the heavens, doth he walk?

13 And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud?

13 “You say, ‘(R)What does God know? Can He judge through the thick darkness?

13 Yet you say: “What does God know? Can He judge through thick darkness?(H)

13 You've asked, "What does God know? Can he sort through pitch black darkness?'

14 The path of the ancient time, wilt thou mark, which the men of iniquity trod?

14 Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit of heaven.

14 (S)Clouds are a hiding place for Him, so that He cannot see;And He walks on the (g)vault of heaven.’

14 Clouds(I) veil Him so that He cannot see,as He walks on the circle of the sky.”

14 Thick clouds cover him so he can't see as he walks back and forth at heaven's horizon.

15 Who were snatched away before the time, and, a stream, washed away their foundation?

15 Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden?

15 “Will you keep to the ancient pathWhich (T)wicked men have trod,

15 Will you continue on the ancient paththat wicked men have walked?

15 "Will you keep walking on the traditional path that sinners have tread,

16 Who had been saying unto GOD, Depart from us! and - What can the Almighty do for himself?

16 Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood:

16 Who were snatched away (U)before their time,Whose (V)foundations were (h)washed away by a river?

16 They were snatched away before their time, and their foundations(J) were washed away by a river.

16 who were snatched away before their time; when their foundation was swept away by a river?

17 Yet, he, had filled their houses with good! The counsel of the lawless, then, is far from me:

17 Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them?

17 “They (W)said to God, ‘Depart from us!’And ‘What can (i)the Almighty do to them?’

17 They were the ones who said to God, “Leave us alone!”and “What can the Almighty do to us?”(b)(K)

17 They told God, "Get away from us!' and "What will the Almighty do to them?'

18 The righteous shall see and rejoice, and, the innocent, shall laugh them to scorn:

18 Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

18 “Yet He (X)filled their houses with good things; But (Y)the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

18 But it was He who filled their houses with good things. The counsel of the wicked is far from me!

18 "Though God fills their houses with good things, the counsel of the wicked will remain far from me.

19 If our assailants do not vanish, then, their abundance, a fire consumeth!

19 The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn.

19 “The (Z)righteous see and are glad,And the innocent mock them,

19 The righteous see this and rejoice;the innocent mock them, saying,(L)

19 The righteous will see this and rejoice; the innocent will insult him, saying,

Make Peace With God

20 Shew thyself to be one with him - I pray thee - and prosper, thereby, shall there come on thee blessing.

20 Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumeth.

20 Saying, ‘Truly our adversaries are cut off,And their (j)abundance (AA)the fire has consumed.’

20 “Surely our opponents are destroyed, and fire has consumed what they left behind.”(M)

20 "Our enemies are sure to be destroyed, and fire will burn up what's left of their riches."

21 Accept, I beseech thee, from his mouth - instruction, - and lay up his sayings in thy heart.

21 Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.

21 (k)(AB)Yield now and be at peace with Him;Thereby good will come to you.

21 Come to terms with God and be at peace;(N)in this way(c) good will come to you.

21 "Get to know God, and you'll be at peace with him, and then prosperity will come to you.

22 If thou return unto the Almighty and submit thyself, if thou far remove perversity from thy tent,

22 Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.

22 “Please receive (l)(AC)instruction from His mouthAnd establish His words in your heart.

22 Receive instruction from His mouth,(O)and place His sayings(P) in your heart.

22 Accept what he has to teach you, and treasure his words in your heart.

23 Then lay up, in the dust, precious ore, and, among the stones of the torrent-beds, fine gold:

23 If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.

23 “If you (AD)return to (m)the Almighty, you will be (n)restored; If you (AE)remove unrighteousness far from your tent,

23 If you return(Q) to the Almighty, you will be renewed. If you banish injustice from your tent

23 "If you return to the Almighty you'll be restored, as you remove iniquity from your household.

24 So shall, the Almighty, become, thy precious ores, yea glittering silver unto thee!

24 Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.

24 And (AF)place your (o)gold in the dust,And the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks,

24 and consign your gold to the dust, the gold of Ophir(R) to the stones in the wadis,

24 Bury your gold nuggets in the dust, and your source of gold among the stones in a streambed,

25 For, then, in the Almighty, shalt thou take exquisite delight, and shalt lift up - unto GOD - thy face;

25 Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.

25 Then (p)the Almighty will be your (q)goldAnd choice silver to you.

25 the Almighty will be your goldand your finest silver.

25 and then the Almighty will be your gold and your refined silver.

26 Thou shalt make entreaty unto him, and he will hear thee, and, thy vows, shalt thou pay;

26 For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God.

26 “For then you will (AG)delight in (r)the AlmightyAnd lift up your face to God.

26 Then you will delight(S) in the Almightyand lift up your face to God.(T)

26 "Then you'll take delight in the Almighty; and will turn your face toward God.

27 And thou shalt decree a purpose, and it shall be fulfilled unto thee, and, upon thy ways, shall have shone a light;

27 Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.

27 “You will (AH)pray to Him, and (AI)He will hear you;And you will pay your vows.

27 You will pray to Him, and He will hear you,(U)and you will fulfill your vows.

27 You'll entreat him and he'll listen to you as you fulfill your vows.

28 When men cast themselves down, then thou shalt say: Up! And, him that is of downcast eyes, shall he save;

28 Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.

28 “You will also decree a thing, and it will be established for you;And (AJ)light will shine on your ways.

28 When you make a decision, it will be carried out,(d)and light will shine on your ways.(V)

28 When you make a decision on something, it will be established for you, and light will brighten your way.

29 He shall deliver the innocent, and thou shalt escape by the pureness of thy hands.

29 When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.

29 “When (s)you are cast down, you will speak with (t)confidence,And the (u)(AK)humble person He will save.

29 When others are humiliated and you say, “Lift them up,”God will save the humble.(e)(W)

29 "For when they're humbled, you may respond; "It's their pride!' but he delivers the humble.
