Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
So, the sisters sent [someone] to Him, saying, "Look, Lord, the person you love [i.e., your dear friend, Lazarus] is sick."
Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
Now Jesus had been talking about Lazarus' death, but the disciples thought He was referring to normal sleep.
Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
"Lazarus is dead; and for your sakes I am glad I was not there, in order that you may believe. But let us go to him."
But some of them said, "This is the man who caused the blind man to see! Couldn't he have done something to keep Lazarus from dying?"
So, they removed the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, "Father, thank you for hearing me. [Note: Jesus had already prayed for and been assured of Lazarus' resurrection].
And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.
There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.
Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.
But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;
The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.

So they moved the stone away. And Jesus looked upward and said, "Father, I thank you for listening to me, though I knew that you always listen to me. But I have said this for the sake of the people that are standing around me that they may believe that you have made me your messenger." After saying this he called out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and with his face muffled with a handkerchief. When Jesus received it he said, "This sickness is not to end in death, but is for the honor of God, that through it the Son of God may be honored." Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed on for two days in the place where he was, and then afterward said to his disciples, "Let us go back to Judea." The disciples said to him, "Master, the Jews have just been trying to stone you, and are you going back there again?" Jesus answered, "Is not the day twelve hours long? Now Jesus had referred to his death. But they supposed that he meant a natural falling asleep. So Jesus then told them plainly,
