Are ye ignorant, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law) that the law hath power over a man, only so long as it liveth? For a married woman is bound by the law to her husband while he is living; but if her husband die, she is discharged from the law of her husband. Therefore while her husband is living, she shall be called an adulteress if she become another man's: but if her husband be dead, she is free from the law; so that she is not an adulteress, though she become another man's. read more.
And thus, my brethren, ye also are dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye might become another's, even his who is raised from the dead, that we might bring forth fruit unto God. For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions while we were under the law operated in our bodies so as to bring forth fruit unto death. But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead by which we were bound, that we might serve God in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter. What shall we say then? is the law sin? God forbid! Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust to be sinful, if the law had not said, "Thou shalt not covet." But sin taking occasion by the commandment wrought in me all manner of concupiscence: for without the law sin was dead. And I was heretofore alive without the law: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died: and the commandment which was intended to life, I found to be unto death. For sin taking occasion by the commandment deceived me, and by it slew me. So that the law is holy; and the commandment holy, and just, and good. Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid! But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good: that sin might be shewn by the commandment to be exceeding sinful. For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. For that which I do, I allow not: for I do not that which I would; but what I hate, this I do. And if I do that which I would not, I consent to the law that it is good: but now I am no more the doer of it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is in my flesh) dwelleth no good: for to will is present with me, but how to perform that which is good, I find not. For the law having but a faint shadow of good things to come, and not the full image of the things, can never, even by the great annual sacrifices which they offer statedly, make the comers thereunto perfect. that the righteousness of the law may be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh but after the spirit. For they who are after the flesh, mind the things of the flesh; but they who are led by the Spirit, do mind spiritual things. Now to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace: because the carnal mind is an enemy to God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be: and they who are carnal, cannot please God. For whosoever shall keep the whole law besides, but offend in one point, he is under the penalty of all: read more.
for He that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou do not commit adultery, but committest murder, thou art a transgressor of the law. So speak, and so act, as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty. For he shall have judgement without mercy, that hath not shewn mercy: but mercy triumpheth over judgement. What is the advantage, my brethren, if any one say that he has faith, and he hath not works, can faith alone save him? If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food; and one of you say to them, Go in peace, be ye warmed and be ye filled: but ye give them not the necessaries of life, what profit is it to them? so faith, if it have not works, being alone, is dead. But one may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith by thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou dost well: the devils also believe and tremble. But desirest thou to know, O vain man, that faith without works, is dead? consider, Was not our father Abraham justified by works, when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar? Thou seest that faith co-operated with his works, and that by his works his faith was perfected. And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness; and he was called the friend of God. Ye see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. And in like manner also was not the harlot Rahab justified by works, when she entertained the spies, and let them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
