Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And he fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread."read more.
But he answered, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'" Then the devil took him to the holy city, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written, 'He will give his angels charge of you,' and 'In their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.'" Jesus said to him, "Again it is written, 'You shall not tempt the Lord your God.'" Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, and their glory. And he said to him, "All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me." Then Jesus said to him, "Away, Satan! for it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.'" Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him.

The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.

And you know that he appeared to take away our sins, and in him there is no sin.

And he was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him.

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, being tempted for forty days by the devil. In those days he ate nothing, and when they had ended, he was hungry. And the devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread."read more.

And he said to him, "To you I will give all this authority and their glory; for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. If you, then, will worship me, it shall all be yours." He took him to Jerusalem, set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here; for it is written: 'He will give his angels charge of you, to guard you,' and, 'In their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.'" And Jesus answered him, "It is said, 'You shall not tempt the Lord your God.'" When the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.

From that time Jesus began to show to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised on the third day. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him saying, "Never, Lord! This shall never happen to you!" But he turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men."

And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He spoke plainly about this. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But when he had turned around and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter, and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men."

Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with me."read more.
And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, "O my Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will." Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, "So, could you not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, so that you will not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." Again, a second time, he went away and prayed, "O my Father, if this cup cannot pass away unless I drink it, your will be done." And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. So he left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.

And when he came again, he found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to answer him. Then he came the third time and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough! The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us go; see, my betrayer is at hand."

When he came to the place, he said to them, "Pray that you may not enter into temptation." And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and knelt down and prayed, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; nevertheless not my will, but yours, be done."read more.
An angel appeared to him from heaven, and strengthened him. And being in agony, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. When he rose from prayer, and came to his disciples, he found them sleeping from sorrow. He said to them, "Why do you sleep? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation."

And those who passed by hurled insults at him, wagging their heads and saying, "You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross." So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying,read more.
"He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him; for he said, 'I am the Son of God.'" And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way.

So also the chief priests mocked him among themselves with the scribes, and said, "He saved others; he cannot save himself. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe." Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.

and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself." There was also an inscription written over him: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?

Others, testing him, sought from him a sign from heaven.

Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, "Teacher, we want to see a sign from you." But he answered them, "An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign; but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, "This is an evil generation. It seeks a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.

Then the Jews said to him, "What sign do you show to us, since you do this?"

So they said to him, "What sign will you perform then, that we may see it and believe you? What work will you do?

For because he himself has suffered, being tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.
