And when you pray, do not repeat empty phrases as the heathen do, for they imagine that their prayers will be heard if they use words enough.

First of all, then, I urge that entreaties, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for all men,
never cease to thank God for you when I mention you in my prayers.
On the Sabbath we went outside the gates, to the bank of the river where we supposed there was a praying place, and we sat down and talked with the women who gathered there.
And he said to them, "Why are you asleep? Get up, and pray that you may not be subjected to trial!"
