'Righteousness' in the Bible

The faithful city—what an adulteress she has become!She was once full of justice.Righteousness once dwelt in her—but now, murderers!

Zion will be redeemed by justice,her repentant ones by righteousness.

For the vineyard of the Lord of Hostsis the house of Israel,and the men of Judah,the plant He delighted in.He looked for justicebut saw injustice,for righteousness,but heard cries of wretchedness.

But the Lord of Hosts is exalted by His justice,and the holy God is distinguished by righteousness.

The dominion will be vast,and its prosperity will never end.He will reign on the throne of Davidand over his kingdom,to establish and sustain itwith justice and righteousness from now on and forever.The zeal of the Lord of Hosts will accomplish this.

Righteousness will be a belt around His loins;faithfulness will be a belt around His waist.

I long for You in the night;yes, my spirit within me diligently seeks You,for when Your judgments are in the land,the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.

But if the wicked man is shown favor,he does not learn righteousness.In a righteous land he acts unjustlyand does not see the majesty of the Lord.

And I will make justice the measuring lineand righteousness the mason’s level.”Hail will sweep away the false refuge,and water will flood your hiding place.

Then justice will inhabit the wilderness,and righteousness will dwell in the orchard.

The result of righteousness will be peace;the effect of righteousnesswill be quiet confidence forever.

The Lord is exalted, for He dwells on high;He has filled Zion with justice and righteousness.

Who has stirred him up from the east?He calls righteousness to his feet.The Lord hands nations over to him,and he subdues kings.He makes them like dust with his sword,like wind-driven stubble with his bow.

The Lord was pleased, because of His righteousness,to magnify His instruction and make it glorious.

“Heavens, sprinkle from above,and let the skies shower righteousness.Let the earth open upso that salvation will sproutand righteousness will spring up with it.I, Yahweh, have created it.

I have raised him up in righteousness,and will level all roads for him.He will rebuild My city,and set My exiles free,not for a price or a bribe,”says the Lord of Hosts.

It will be said to Me: Righteousness and strengthis only in the Lord.”All who are enraged against Himwill come to Him and be put to shame.

“Listen to this, house of Jacob—those who are called by the name Israeland have descended from Judah,who swear by the name of Yahwehand declare the God of Israel,but not in truth or righteousness.

If only you had paid attention to My commands.Then your peace would have been like a river,and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.

Listen to Me, you who pursue righteousness,you who seek the Lord:Look to the rock from which you were cut,and to the quarry from which you were dug.

My righteousness is near,My salvation appears,and My arms will bring justice to the nations.The coastlands will put their hope in Me,and they will look to My strength.

Look up to the heavens,and look at the earth beneath;for the heavens will vanish like smoke,the earth will wear out like a garment,and its inhabitants will die like gnats.But My salvation will last forever,and My righteousness will never be shattered.

Listen to Me, you who know righteousness,the people in whose heart is My instruction:do not fear disgrace by men,and do not be shattered by their taunts.

For the moth will devour them like a garment,and the worm will eat them like wool.But My righteousness will last forever,and My salvation for all generations.

and you will be establishedon a foundation of righteousness.You will be far from oppression,you will certainly not be afraid;you will be far from terror,it will certainly not come near you.

This is what the Lord says:Preserve justice and do what is right,for My salvation is coming soon,and My righteousness will be revealed.

I will expose your righteousness,and your works—they will not profit you.

Then your light will appear like the dawn,and your recovery will come quickly.Your righteousness will go before you,and the Lord’s glory will be your rear guard.

Therefore justice is far from us,and righteousness does not reach us.We hope for light, but there is darkness;for brightness, but we live in the night.

Justice is turned back,and righteousness stands far off.For truth has stumbled in the public square,and honesty cannot enter.

He saw that there was no man—He was amazed that there was no one interceding;so His own arm brought salvation,and His own righteousness supported Him.

He put on righteousness like a breastplate,and a helmet of salvation on His head;He put on garments of vengeance for clothing,and He wrapped Himself in zeal as in a cloak.

I will bring gold instead of bronze;I will bring silver instead of iron,bronze instead of wood,and iron instead of stones.I will appoint peace as your guardand righteousness as your ruler.

I greatly rejoice in the Lord,I exult in my God;for He has clothed me with the garments of salvationand wrapped me in a robe of righteousness,as a groom wears a turbanand as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

For as the earth produces its growth,and as a garden enables what is sown to spring up,so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praiseto spring up before all the nations.

I will not keep silent because of Zion,and I will not keep still because of Jerusalem,until her righteousness shines like a bright lightand her salvation, like a flaming torch.

Nations will see your righteousnessand all kings, your glory.You will be called by a new namethat the Lord’s mouth will announce.
