For people who live by the standard set by their lower nature are usually thinking the things suggested by that nature, and people who live by the standard set by the Spirit are usually thinking the things suggested by the Spirit. The people who live on the plane of the lower nature cannot please God. But you are not living on the plane of the lower nature, but on the spiritual plane, if the Spirit of God has His home within you. Unless a man has the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.

So, brothers, we are under obligations, but not to our lower nature to live by the standard set by it; for if you live by such a standard, you are going to die, but if by the Spirit you put a stop to the doings of your lower nature, you will live.

I mean this: Practice living by the Spirit and then by no means will you gratify the cravings of your lower nature. For the cravings of the lower nature are just the opposite to those of the Spirit, and the cravings of the Spirit are just the opposite of those of the lower nature; these two are opposed to each other, so that you cannot do anything you please.

Stop getting drunk on wine, for that means profligacy, but ever be filled with the Spirit,

And all of us, with faces uncovered, because we continue to reflect like mirrors the splendor of the Lord, are being transformed into likeness to Him, from one degree of splendor to another, since it comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

Dearly beloved, we are now God's children, but what we are going to be has not been unveiled. We know that if it is unveiled, we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in him tries to make himself as pure as He is.

So any healthy tree bears good fruit and a sickly tree bears poor fruit.

I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in union with me and I in union with him will bear abundant fruit, because you cannot do anything cut off from union with me. If anyone does not remain in union with me, he is thrown away as a mere branch and is dried up; then it is picked up and thrown into the fire and burned up. Brothers, if anybody is caught in the very act of doing wrong, you who are spiritual, in the spirit of gentleness, must set him right; each of you continuing to think of yourself, for you may be tempted too.

Make it your practice to receive into full Christian fellowship people who are overscrupulous, but not to criticize their views. One man believes that he can eat anything; another who is overscrupulous eats nothing but vegetables. The man who eats anything must not look down on the man who does not do so, nor must the man who does not do so condemn the man who does, for God has fully accepted him.

But you must see to it that this right of yours does not become a stumbling block to overscrupulous people. For if somebody sees you, who have an intelligent view of this matter, partaking of a meal in an idol's temple, will he not be emboldened, with his overscrupulous conscience, to eat the food which has been sacrificed to an idol? Yes, the overscrupulous brother, for whom Christ died, is ruined by your so-called knowledge.read more.
Now if in such a way you sin against your brothers and wound their overscrupulous consciences, you are actually sinning against Christ. So then, if food can make my brother fall, I will never, no, never, eat meat again, in order to keep my brother from falling.

But, as the Scripture says, they are: "Things which eye has never seen and ear has never heard, and never have occurred to human hearts, which God prepared for those who love Him." For God unveiled them to us through His Spirit, for the Spirit by searching discovers everything, even the deepest truths about God. Now we have not received the spirit that belongs to the world but the Spirit that comes from God, that we may get an insight into the blessings God has graciously given us. These truths we are setting forth, not in words that man's wisdom teaches but in words that the Spirit teaches, in this way fitting spiritual words to spiritual truths.

But the spiritual man appreciates everything, and yet he himself is not really appreciated by anybody. For who has ever known the Lord's thoughts, so that he can instruct Him? But we now possess Christ's thoughts.

training us to give up godless ways and worldly cravings and live serious, upright, and godly lives in this world,

I beg you, therefore, brothers, through these mercies God has shown you, to make a decisive dedication of your bodies as a living sacrifice, devoted and well-pleasing to God, which is your reasonable service. Stop living in accordance with the customs of this world, but by the new ideals that mold your minds continue to transform yourselves, so as to find and follow God's will; that is, what is good, well-pleasing to Him, and perfect.

Or, are you not conscious that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit that is in you, whom you have as a gift from God? Furthermore, you are not your own, for you have been bought and actually paid for. So you must honor God with your bodies.

And those who belong to Jesus the Christ have crucified the lower nature with its passions and evil cravings.

So if you have been raised to life in fellowship with Christ, keep on seeking the things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Practice occupying your minds with the things above, not with the things on earth;

If you continue to keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commands and remain in His love.

And He is Himself the atoning sacrifice for our sins; and not for ours alone, but also for the whole world. By this we can be sure that we know Him -- if we practice obedience to His commands. Whoever says, "I know Him," but does not practice obedience to His commands is a liar, and there is no truth in his heart;read more.
but whoever practices obedience to His message really has a perfect love of God in his heart. By this we can be sure that we are in union with Him: Whoever claims, "I am always in union with Him," ought to live as He lived.

This is how we can be sure that we love the children of God, by continuing to love God and to obey His commands. For love to God means this, to practice obedience to His commands, and His commands are not burdensome,

If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk where the Spirit leads.

"You people, stubborn in will, heathenish in hearts and ears, you are always resisting the Holy Spirit, as your forefathers did, too.

You must stop offending the Holy Spirit of God by whom you have been stamped for the day of redemption.

Stop stifling the Spirit.

Now they have come to know that everything you have given me really comes from you;

and that from childhood you have known the sacred Scriptures which can give you wisdom that leads to salvation through the faith that leans on Christ Jesus.
