Israel's Affliction

11 I am the man who has seen affliction Because of the rod of His wrath.

11 I am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.

11 I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod of God's wrath.

11 I am a man familiar with affliction under the rod of God's anger.

11 I am [Jeremiah] the man who has seen affliction under the rod of His wrath.

22 He has driven me and made me walk In darkness and not in light.

22 He hath led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light.

22 He has driven me away and forced [me] to walk in darkness instead of light.

22 He has led me brought me into darkness, not into light.

22 He has led me and brought me into darkness and not light.

33 Surely against me He has turned His hand Repeatedly all the day.

33 Surely against me is he turned; he turneth his hand against me all the day.

33 Yes, He repeatedly turns His hand against me all day long.

33 He truly turned his hand against me, again and again, all day long.

33 Surely He has turned away from me; His hand is against me all the day.

44 He has caused my flesh and my skin to waste away, He has broken my bones.

44 My flesh and my skin hath he made old; he hath broken my bones.

44 He has worn away my flesh and skin; He has shattered my bones.

44 He made my flesh and skin prematurely old; he broke my bones.

44 My flesh and my skin has He worn out and made old; He has shattered my bones.

55 He has besieged and encompassed me with bitterness and hardship.

55 He hath builded against me, and compassed me with gall and travail.

55 He has laid siege against me, encircling me with bitterness and hardship.

55 He laid siege against me, surrounding me with bitterness and suffering.

55 He has built up [siege mounds] against me and surrounded me with bitterness, tribulation, and anguish.

66 In dark places He has made me dwell, Like those who have long been dead.

66 He hath set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old.

66 He has made me dwell in darkness like those who have been dead for ages.

66 He has forced me to live in darkness, like those who are long dead.

66 He has caused me to dwell in dark places like those long dead.

77 He has walled me in so that I cannot go out; He has made my chain heavy.

77 He hath hedged me about, that I cannot get out: he hath made my chain heavy.

77 He has walled me in so I cannot escape; He has weighed me down with chains.

77 He has walled me in so I cannot escape; he placed heavy chains on me.

77 He walled me in so that I cannot get out; He has weighted down my chain.

88 Even when I cry out and call for help, He shuts out my prayer.

88 Also when I cry and shout, he shutteth out my prayer.

88 Even when I cry out and plead for help, He rejects my prayer.

88 Indeed, when I cry out, calling for help, he shuts out my prayer.

88 Even when I cry and shout for help, He shuts out my prayer.

99 He has blocked my ways with hewn stone; He has made my paths crooked.

99 He hath inclosed my ways with hewn stone, he hath made my paths crooked.

99 He has walled in my ways with cut stones; He has made my paths crooked.

99 He impeded my way with blocks of stone, making my paths uneven.

99 He has enclosed my ways with hewn stone; He has made my paths crooked.

1010 He is to me like a bear lying in wait, Like a lion in secret places.

1010 He was unto me as a bear lying in wait, and as a lion in secret places.

1010 He is a bear waiting in ambush, a lion in hiding;

1010 He is like a bear that lies in wait for me, a lion in hiding.

1010 He is to me like a bear lying in wait, and like a lion [hiding] in secret places.

1111 He has turned aside my ways and torn me to pieces; He has made me desolate.

1111 He hath turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces: he hath made me desolate.

1111 He forced me off my way and tore me to pieces; He left me desolate.

1111 He forced me off my path, tearing me to pieces and making me desolate.

1111 He has turned me off my ways and pulled me in pieces; He has made me desolate.

1212 He bent His bow And set me as a target for the arrow.

1212 He hath bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.

1212 He bent His bow and set me as the target for His arrow.

1212 He bent his bow, aiming at me with his arrow.

1212 He has bent His bow and set me as a mark for the arrow.

1313 He made the arrows of His quiver To enter into my inward parts.

1313 He hath caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins.

1313 He pierced my kidneys with His arrows.

1313 He caused his war arrows to pierce my vital organs.

1313 He has caused the arrows of His quiver to enter into my heart [the seat of my affections and desires].

1414 I have become a laughingstock to all my people, Their mocking song all the day.

1414 I was a derision to all my people; and their song all the day.

1414 I am a laughingstock to all my people, mocked by their songs all day long.

1414 I have become a laughingstock to all my people, the object of their taunts throughout the day.

1414 I have become a derision to all my people, and [the subject of] their singsong all the day.

1515 He has filled me with bitterness, He has made me drunk with wormwood.

1515 He hath filled me with bitterness, he hath made me drunken with wormwood.

1515 He filled me with bitterness, sated me with wormwood.

1515 He has filled me with bitterness, making me drink wormwood.

1515 He has filled me with bitterness; He has made me drink to excess and until drunken with wormwood [bitterness].

1616 He has broken my teeth with gravel; He has made me cower in the dust.

1616 He hath also broken my teeth with gravel stones, he hath covered me with ashes.

1616 He ground my teeth on gravel and made me cower in the dust.

1616 He broke my teeth on gravel, covering me with dust.

1616 He has also broken my teeth with gravel (stones); He has covered me with ashes.

1717 My soul has been rejected from peace; I have forgotten happiness.

1717 And thou hast removed my soul far off from peace: I forgat prosperity.

1717 My soul has been deprived of peace; I have forgotten what happiness is.

1717 You have removed peace from my life; I have forgotten what prosperity is.

1717 And You have bereaved my soul and cast it off far from peace; I have forgotten what good and happiness are.

1818 So I say, "My strength has perished, And so has my hope from the LORD."

1818 And I said, My strength and my hope is perished from the LORD:

1818 Then I thought: My future is lost, as well as my hope from the Lord.

1818 So I say, "My strength is gone as is my hope in the LORD."

1818 And I say, Perished is my strength and my expectation from the Lord.

1919 Remember my affliction and my wandering, the wormwood and bitterness.

1919 Remembering mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.

1919 Remember my affliction and my homelessness, the wormwood and the poison.

1919 Remember my affliction and homelessness wormwood and gall!

1919 [O Lord] remember [earnestly] my affliction and my misery, my wandering and my outcast state, the wormwood and the gall.

2020 Surely my soul remembers And is bowed down within me.

2020 My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me.

2020 I continually remember [them] and have become depressed.

2020 My mind keeps reflecting on it, and I become depressed.

2020 My soul has them continually in remembrance and is bowed down within me.

The Prophet - A Man Of Hope

2121 This I recall to my mind, Therefore I have hope.

2121 This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.

2121 Yet I call this to mind, and therefore I have hope:

2121 This is what comes to mind, and therefore I have hope:

2121 But this I recall and therefore have I hope and expectation:

2222 The LORD'S lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail.

2222 It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

2222 [Because of] the Lord's faithful love we do not perish, for His mercies never end.

2222 Because of the LORD's gracious love we are not consumed, since his compassions never end.

2222 It is because of the Lord's mercy and loving-kindness that we are not consumed, because His [tender] compassions fail not.

2323 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.

2323 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

2323 They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!

2323 They are new every morning great is your faithfulness!

2323 They are new every morning; great and abundant is Your stability and faithfulness.

2424 "The LORD is my portion," says my soul, "Therefore I have hope in Him."

2424 The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.

2424 I say: The Lord is my portion, therefore I will put my hope in Him.

2424 "The LORD is all I have," says my soul, "Therefore I will trust in him."

2424 The Lord is my portion or share, says my living being (my inner self); therefore will I hope in Him and wait expectantly for Him.

2525 The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, To the person who seeks Him.

2525 The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.

2525 The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the person who seeks Him.

2525 The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the person who searches for him.

2525 The Lord is good to those who wait hopefully and expectantly for Him, to those who seek Him [inquire of and for Him and require Him by right of necessity and on the authority of God's word].

2626 It is good that he waits silently For the salvation of the LORD.

2626 It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.

2626 It is good to wait quietly for deliverance from the Lord.

2626 It is good to hope and wait patiently for the LORD's salvation.

2626 It is good that one should hope in and wait quietly for the salvation (the safety and ease) of the Lord.

2727 It is good for a man that he should bear The yoke in his youth.

2727 It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.

2727 It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is [still] young.

2727 It is good when a young man carries the yoke of discipline in his youth.

2727 It is good for a man that he should bear the yoke [of divine disciplinary dealings] in his youth.

2828 Let him sit alone and be silent Since He has laid it on him.

2828 He sitteth alone and keepeth silence, because he hath borne it upon him.

2828 Let him sit alone and be silent, for God has disciplined him.

2828 He is to sit apart and remain silent, because the LORD has laid it upon him.

2828 Let him sit alone uncomplaining and keeping silent [in hope], because [God] has laid [the yoke] upon him [for his benefit].

2929 Let him put his mouth in the dust, Perhaps there is hope.

2929 He putteth his mouth in the dust; if so be there may be hope.

2929 Let him put his mouth in the dust- perhaps there is [still] hope.

2929 Let him fall face down in the dust, so there may yet be hope.

2929 Let him put his mouth in the dust [in abject recognition of his unworthiness] -- "there may yet be hope.

3030 Let him give his cheek to the smiter, Let him be filled with reproach.

3030 He giveth his cheek to him that smiteth him: he is filled full with reproach.

3030 Let him offer [his] cheek to the one who would strike him; let him be filled with shame.

3030 He will endure being slapped in the face, bringing him public disgrace.

3030 Let him give his cheek to the One Who smites him [even through His human agents]; let him be filled [full] with [men's] reproach [in meekness].

3131 For the Lord will not reject forever,

3131 For the Lord will not cast off for ever:

3131 For the Lord will not reject [us] forever.

3131 Indeed, the Lord will not always reject us

3131 For the Lord will not cast off forever!

3232 For if He causes grief, Then He will have compassion According to His abundant lovingkindness.

3232 But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies.

3232 Even if He causes suffering, He will show compassion according to His abundant, faithful love.

3232 though he causes grief, his compassion abounds according to his gracious love.

3232 But though He causes grief, yet will He be moved to compassion according to the multitude of His loving-kindness and tender mercy.

3333 For He does not afflict willingly Or grieve the sons of men.

3333 For he doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.

3333 For He does not enjoy bringing affliction or suffering on mankind.

3333 For he does not deliberately hurt or grieve human beings.

3333 For He does not willingly and from His heart afflict or grieve the children of men.

3434 To crush under His feet All the prisoners of the land,

3434 To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth,

3434 Crushing all the prisoners of the land beneath one's feet,

3434 When any of the prisoners of the earth are crushed underfoot,

3434 To trample and crush underfoot all the prisoners of the earth,

3535 To deprive a man of justice In the presence of the Most High,

3535 To turn aside the right of a man before the face of the most High,

3535 denying justice to a man in the presence of the Most High,

3535 when a person's rights are perverted in defiance of the Most High.

3535 To turn aside and deprive a man of his rights before the face of the Most High or a superior [acting as God's representative],

3636 To defraud a man in his lawsuit-- Of these things the Lord does not approve.

3636 To subvert a man in his cause, the Lord approveth not.

3636 or suppressing a person's lawsuit- the Lord does not approve [of these things].

3636 When a man is thwarted in his appeal, does the Lord condone it?

3636 To subvert a man in his cause -- "[of these things] the Lord does not approve.

3737 Who is there who speaks and it comes to pass, Unless the Lord has commanded it?

3737 Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not?

3737 Who is there who speaks and it happens, unless the Lord has ordained [it]?

3737 Who can command, and it happens, without the Lord having ordered it?

3737 Who is he who speaks and it comes to pass, if the Lord has not authorized and commanded it?

3838 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High That both good and ill go forth?

3838 Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evil and good?

3838 Do not both adversity and good come from the mouth of the Most High?

3838 Do not both good and evil things proceed from the mouth of the Most High?

3838 Is it not out of the mouth of the Most High that evil and good both proceed [adversity and prosperity, physical evil or misfortune and physical good or happiness]?

3939 Why should any living mortal, or any man, Offer complaint in view of his sins?

3939 Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?

3939 Why should [any] living person complain, [any] man, because of the punishment for his sins?

3939 Why should anyone living complain, any mortal, about being punished for sin?

3939 Why does a living man sigh [one who is still in this life's school of discipline]? [And why does] a man complain for the punishment of his sins?

4040 Let us examine and probe our ways, And let us return to the LORD.

4040 Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the LORD.

4040 Let us search out and examine our ways, and turn back to the Lord.

4040 Let us examine our lifestyles, putting them to the test, and turn back to the LORD.

4040 Let us test and examine our ways, and let us return to the Lord!

4141 We lift up our heart and hands Toward God in heaven;

4141 Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.

4141 Let us lift up our hearts and [our] hands to God in heaven:

4141 Let us lift up our hearts and our hands to God in heaven.

4141 Let us lift up our hearts and our hands [and then with them mount up in prayer] to God in heaven:

4242 We have transgressed and rebelled, You have not pardoned.

4242 We have transgressed and have rebelled: thou hast not pardoned.

4242 We have sinned and rebelled; You have not forgiven.

4242 As for us, we have sinned and rebelled; but you have not pardoned us.

4242 We have transgressed and rebelled and You have not pardoned.

4343 You have covered Yourself with anger And pursued us; You have slain and have not spared.

4343 Thou hast covered with anger, and persecuted us: thou hast slain, thou hast not pitied.

4343 You have covered Yourself in anger and pursued us; You have killed without compassion.

4343 Clothing yourself with anger, you pursued us. You killed without pity,

4343 You have covered Yourself with wrath and pursued and afflicted us; You have slain without pity.

4444 You have covered Yourself with a cloud So that no prayer can pass through.

4444 Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud, that our prayer should not pass through.

4444 You have covered Yourself with a cloud so that no prayer can pass through.

4444 You covered yourself with a cloud that prayer cannot pierce.

4444 You have covered Yourself with a cloud so that no prayer can pass through.

4545 You have made us mere offscouring and refuse In the midst of the peoples.

4545 Thou hast made us as the offscouring and refuse in the midst of the people.

4545 You have made us disgusting filth among the peoples.

4545 You have reduced us to scum and garbage among the nations.

4545 You have made us offscouring and refuse among the nations.

4646 All our enemies have opened their mouths against us.

4646 All our enemies have opened their mouths against us.

4646 All our enemies open their mouths against us.

4646 All our enemies jeer at us with gaping mouths.

4646 All our enemies have gaped at us and railed against us.

4747 Panic and pitfall have befallen us, Devastation and destruction;

4747 Fear and a snare is come upon us, desolation and destruction.

4747 We have experienced panic and pitfall, devastation and destruction.

4747 Panic and pitfalls beset us, along with devastation and ruin.

4747 Fear and pitfall have come upon us, devastation and destruction.

4848 My eyes run down with streams of water Because of the destruction of the daughter of my people.

4848 Mine eye runneth down with rivers of water for the destruction of the daughter of my people.

4848 My eyes flow with streams of tears because of the destruction of my dear people.

4848 My eyes run with rivers of tears over the destruction of my cherished people.

4848 My eyes overflow with streams of tears because of the destruction of the daughter of my people.

4949 My eyes pour down unceasingly, Without stopping,

4949 Mine eye trickleth down, and ceaseth not, without any intermission,

4949 My eyes overflow unceasingly, without end,

4949 My tears pour down ceaselessly; I am far from relief

4949 My eyes overflow continually and will not cease

5050 Until the LORD looks down And sees from heaven.

5050 Till the LORD look down, and behold from heaven.

5050 until the Lord looks down from heaven and sees.

5050 until the LORD bends down to see from heaven.

5050 Until the Lord looks down and sees from heaven.

5151 My eyes bring pain to my soul Because of all the daughters of my city.

5151 Mine eye affecteth mine heart because of all the daughters of my city.

5151 My eyes bring me grief because of [the fate of] all the women in my city.

5151 What I see grieves my soul because of all the young women of my city.

5151 My eyes cause me grief at the fate of all the maidens [and the daughter-towns] of my city [Jerusalem].

5252 My enemies without cause Hunted me down like a bird;

5252 Mine enemies chased me sore, like a bird, without cause.

5252 For no [apparent] reason, my enemies hunted me like a bird.

5252 My enemies hunted me like a bird, viciously and without justification.

5252 I have been hunted down like a bird by those who were my enemies without cause.

5353 They have silenced me in the pit And have placed a stone on me.

5353 They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and cast a stone upon me.

5353 They dropped me alive into a pit and threw stones at me.

5353 They dumped me alive into a pit, sealing me in with stone.

5353 They [thought they had] destroyed my life in the dungeon (pit) and cast a stone [over it] above me.

5454 Waters flowed over my head; I said, "I am cut off!"

5454 Waters flowed over mine head; then I said, I am cut off.

5454 Water flooded over my head, and I thought: I'm going to die!

5454 Water closed over my head, and I said, "I'm a dead man."

5454 The waters ran down on my head; I said, I am gone.

5555 I called on Your name, O LORD, Out of the lowest pit.

5555 I called upon thy name, O LORD, out of the low dungeon.

5555 I called on Your name, Yahweh, from the depths of the Pit.

5555 I called on your name, LORD, from the depths of the Pit,

5555 I called upon Your name, O Lord, out of the depths [of the mire] of the dungeon.

5656 You have heard my voice, "Do not hide Your ear from my prayer for relief, From my cry for help."

5656 Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry.

5656 You hear my plea: Do not ignore my cry for relief.

5656 You heard my voice don't close your ear to my sighs and cries.

5656 You heard my voice [then]: [Oh] hide not Your ear [now] at my prayer for relief.

5757 You drew near when I called on You; You said, "Do not fear!"

5757 Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not.

5757 You come near when I call on You; You say: "Do not be afraid."

5757 You drew near when I called out to you. You said, "Stop being afraid"

5757 You drew near on the day I called to You; You said, Fear not.

5858 O Lord, You have pleaded my soul's cause; You have redeemed my life.

5858 O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life.

5858 You defend my cause, Lord; You redeem my life.

5858 Lord, you have defended my cause; you have redeemed my life.

5858 O Lord, You have pleaded the causes of my soul [You have managed my affairs and You have protected my person and my rights]; You have rescued and redeemed my life!

5959 O LORD, You have seen my oppression; Judge my case.

5959 O LORD, thou hast seen my wrong: judge thou my cause.

5959 Lord, You see the wrong done to me; judge my case.

5959 LORD, you observed how I have been wronged; now make your ruling in my case.

5959 O Lord, You have seen my wrong [done to me]; judge and maintain my cause.

6060 You have seen all their vengeance, All their schemes against me.

6060 Thou hast seen all their vengeance and all their imaginations against me.

6060 You see all their malice, all their plots against me.

6060 You examined their plans for vengeance, all of their plots against me.

6060 You have seen all their vengeance, all their devices against me.

6161 You have heard their reproach, O LORD, All their schemes against me.

6161 Thou hast heard their reproach, O LORD, and all their imaginations against me;

6161 Lord, You hear their insults, all their plots against me.

6161 LORD, you listened to their insults all their plots against me,

6161 You have heard their reproach and revilings, O Lord, and all their devices against me -- "

6262 The lips of my assailants and their whispering Are against me all day long.

6262 The lips of those that rose up against me, and their device against me all the day.

6262 The slander and murmuring of my opponents attack me all day long.

6262 the whisperings of my opponents, their scheming against me all day long.

6262 The lips and thoughts of my assailants are against me all day long.

6363 Look on their sitting and their rising; I am their mocking song.

6363 Behold their sitting down, and their rising up; I am their musick.

6363 When they sit and when they rise, look, I am mocked by their songs.

6363 Watch! Whether they sit down or stand up, they mock me with their songs.

6363 Look at their sitting down and their rising up [their movements, doings, and secret counsels]; I am their singsong [the subject of their derision and merriment].

6464 You will recompense them, O LORD, According to the work of their hands.

6464 Render unto them a recompence, O LORD, according to the work of their hands.

6464 You will pay them back what they deserve, Lord, according to the work of their hands.

6464 Pay them back, LORD, according to their actions.

6464 Render to them a recompense, O Lord, according to the work of their hands.

6565 You will give them hardness of heart, Your curse will be on them.

6565 Give them sorrow of heart, thy curse unto them.

6565 You will give them a heart filled with anguish. May Your curse be on them!

6565 Give them an anguished heart; may your curse be upon them!

6565 You will give them hardness and blindness of heart; Your curse will be upon them.

6666 You will pursue them in anger and destroy them From under the heavens of the LORD!

6666 Persecute and destroy them in anger from under the heavens of the LORD.

6666 You will pursue [them] in anger and destroy them under Your heavens.

6666 Pursue them in your anger and destroy them from under the LORD's heaven.

6666 You will pursue and afflict them in anger and destroy them from under Your heavens, O Lord.
