1 So by all the stimulus of Christ, by every incentive of love, by all your participation in the Spirit, by all your affectionate tenderness,
1 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,
1 Therefore, if there is any encouragement in the Messiah, if there is any comfort of love, if there is any fellowship in the Spirit, if there is any compassion and sympathy,
2 I pray you to give me the utter joy of knowing you are living in harmony, with the same feelings of love, with one heart and soul,
2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.
2 then fill me with joy by having the same attitude, sharing the same love, being united in spirit, and keeping one purpose in mind.
3 never acting for private ends or from vanity, but humbly considering each other the better man,
3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
3 Do not act out of selfish ambition or conceit, but with humility think of others as being better than yourselves.
4 and each with an eye to the interests of others as well as to his own.
4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
4 Do not be concerned about your own interests, but also be concerned about the interests of others.
5 Treat one another with the same spirit as you experience in Christ Jesus.
5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
5 Make your own attitude that of Christ Jesus,
5 Have the same attitude among yourselves that was also in the Messiah Jesus:
6 Though he was divine by nature, he did not set store upon equality with God
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
6 In God's own form existed he, and shared with God equality, deemed nothing needed grasping.
7 but emptied himself by taking the nature of a servant; born in human guise
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
7 Instead, poured out in emptiness, a servant's form did he possess, a mortal man becoming. In human form he chose to be,
8 and appearing in human form, he humbly stooped in his obedience even to die, and to die upon the cross.
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
8 and lived in all humility, death on a cross obeying.
9 Therefore God raised him high and conferred on him a Name above all names,
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
9 Now lifted up by God to heaven, a name above all others given, this matchless name possessing.
10 so that before the Name of Jesus every knee should bend in heaven, on earth, and underneath the earth,
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
10 And so, when Jesus' name is called, the knees of everyone should fall, wherever they're residing.
11 and every tongue confess that 'Jesus Christ is Lord,' to the glory of God the Father.
11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
11 Then every tongue in one accord, will say that Jesus the Messiah is Lord, while God the Father praising.
12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have been obedient always and not simply when I was present, so, now that I am absent, work all the more strenuously at your salvation with reverence and trembling,
12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
12 And so, my dear friends, just as you have always obeyed, not only when I was with you but even more now that I am absent, continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling.
13 for it is God who in his goodwill enables you to will this and to achieve it.
13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
13 For it is God who is working in you, enabling you both to desire and to work out His good purpose.
13 For it is God who is producing in you both the desire and the ability to do what pleases him.
15 so as to be blameless and innocent, faultless children of God in a crooked and perverse generation where you shine like stars in a dark world;
15 so that you will (i)prove yourselves to be (AF)blameless and innocent, (AG)children of God above reproach in the midst of a (AH)crooked and perverse generation, among whom you (j)(AI)appear as (k)lights in the world,
15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;
15 so that you may be blameless and innocent, God's children without any faults among a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine like stars in the world
16 hold fast the word of life, so that I can be proud of you on the Day of Christ, because I have not run or worked for nothing.
16 Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.
16 as you hold firmly to the word of life. Then I will be proud when the Messiah returns that I did not run in vain or work hard in vain.
17 Even if my life-blood has to be poured as a libation on the sacred sacrifice of faith you are offering to God, I rejoice, I congratulate you all ??18 and you in turn must rejoice and congratulate me.
17 Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all.
17 Yet even if I am being poured out like an offering as part of the sacrifice and service I offer for your faith, I rejoice, and I share my joy with all of you.
18 I hope in the Lord Jesus to send you Timotheus before long, that I may be heartened by news of you.
18 You too, I urge you, rejoice in the same way and share your joy with me.
18 For the same cause also do ye joy, and rejoice with me.
18 In the same way you should also be glad and rejoice with me.
18 In the same way, you also should rejoice and share your joy with me.
19 I have no one like him, for genuine interest in your welfare.
19 But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state.
19 Now I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon so that I can be encouraged when I learn of your condition.
20 Everybody is selfish, instead of caring for Jesus Christ.
20 For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state.
20 For I have no one else like-minded who will genuinely care about your interests;
20 I do not have anyone else like him who takes a genuine interest in your welfare.
21 But you know how he has stood the test, how he has served with me in the gospel, like a son helping his father.
21 For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's.
21 For all the others look after their own interests, not after those of Jesus the Messiah.
22 I hope to send him then, as soon as ever I see how it will go with me ??24 though I am confident in the Lord that I shall be coming myself before long.
22 But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel.
22 But you know his proven character, because he has served with me in the gospel ministry like a son with a father.
22 But you know his proven worth how like a son with his father he served with me in the gospel.
23 As for Epaphroditus, however, my brother, my fellow-worker, my fellow-soldier, and your messenger to meet my wants, I think it necessary to send you him at once,
23 Him therefore I hope to send presently, so soon as I shall see how it will go with me.
23 Therefore, I hope to send him as soon as I see how things go with me.
23 Therefore, I hope to send him as soon as I see how things are going to turn out for me.
24 for he has been yearning for you all. He has been greatly concerned because you heard he was ill.
24 But I trust in the Lord that I also myself shall come shortly.
24 Indeed, I am confident in the Lord that I will come to visit you soon.
25 And he was ill, nearly dead with illness. But God had mercy on him, and not only on him but on me, to save me from having one sorrow upon another.
25 Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellowsoldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants.
25 Meanwhile, I thought it best to send Epaphroditus my brother, fellow worker, and fellow soldier, but your messenger and minister to my need back to you.
26 So I am specially eager to send him, that you may be glad when you see him again, and thus my own anxiety may be lightened.
26 For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick.
26 since he has been longing for all of you and was distressed because you heard that he was sick.
26 For he has been longing for all of you and is troubled because you heard that he was sick.
27 Give him a welcome in the Lord, then, with your hearts full of joy. Value men like that,
27 For indeed he was sick to the point of death, but God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, so that I would not have sorrow upon sorrow.
27 For indeed he was sick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.
27 Indeed, he was so sick that he nearly died. However, God had mercy on him, and not only on him but also on me, so that I would not have one grief on top of another.
27 Indeed, he was sick to the point of death, but God had mercy on him, and not only on him but also on me, so that I would not have one sorrow on top of another.
28 for he nearly died in the service of Christ by risking his life to make up for the services you were not here to render me.
28 Therefore I have sent him all the more eagerly so that when you see him again you may rejoice and I may be less concerned about you.
28 I sent him therefore the more carefully, that, when ye see him again, ye may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful.
28 For this reason, I am very eager to send him so that you may rejoice when you see him again and I may be less anxious.
28 Therefore, I am especially eager to send him so that you may have the joy of seeing him again, and so that I may feel relieved.
