Betrayal By A Friend

1 Give ear, O God, to my prayer, And do not hide thyself from my supplication:

1 For the choir director; on stringed instruments. A (a)Maskil of David.(A)Give ear to my prayer, O God;And (B)do not hide Yourself from my supplication.

1 Pay attention to my prayer, God, and do not hide yourself from my appeal.

2 Attend unto me, and answer me, I may ramble in my complaining, And be driven to and fro -

2 Give (C)heed to me and answer me;I am restless in my (D)complaint and (b)(E)am surely distracted,

2 Attend unto me, and hear me: I mourn in my complaint, and make a noise;

2 Pay attention to me and answer me.(B)I am restless and in turmoil with my complaint,(C)

2 Pay attention to me and answer me. I moan and groan in my thoughts,

3 Because of the noise of the enemy, By reason of the oppression of the lawless one, For they would let trouble drop upon me, And, in anger, would they entrap me.

3 Because of the voice of the enemy,Because of the (F)pressure of the wicked;For they (G)bring down (c)trouble upon meAnd in anger they (H)bear a grudge against me.

3 Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked: for they cast iniquity upon me, and in wrath they hate me.

3 because of the enemy’s voice,because of the pressure(b) of the wicked.For they bring down disaster on me(c)and harass me in anger.(D)

3 because of the voice of the enemy, and because of the oppression of the wicked. They bring down evil upon me, and in anger they hate me.

4 My heart, would writhe within me, And, the terrors of Death, have fallen upon me:

4 My (I)heart is in anguish within me,And the terrors of (J)death have fallen upon me.

4 My heart is sore pained within me: and the terrors of death are fallen upon me.

4 My heart shudders within me;(E)terrors of death sweep over me.

4 My heart is trembling within me, and the terrors of death have assaulted me.

5 Fear and trembling, would enter me, And there would have overwhelmed me - a horror!

5 Fear and (K)trembling come upon me,And (d)(L)horror has overwhelmed me.

5 Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me.

5 Fear and trembling grip me;horror has overwhelmed me.(F)

5 Fear and trembling have overwhelmed me, and horror has covered me.

6 Then I said - Oh that there were given me a pinion, like a dove, I would fly away and be at rest:

6 I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!I would fly away and (e)(M)be at rest.

6 And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.

6 I said, “If only I had(d) wings like a dove!I would fly away and find rest.(G)

6 I said, "O, who will give me the wings of a dove, so that I could fly away and live somewhere else?

7 Lo! I would take a distant flight, I would tarry in the wilderness. Selah.

7 “Behold, I would wander far away,I would (N)lodge in the wilderness. (f)Selah.

7 Lo, then would I wander far off, and remain in the wilderness. Selah.

7 How far away I would flee;I would stay in the wilderness.(H)Selah

7 Look, I want to flee far away; I want to settle down in the wilderness. Interlude

8 I would hasten mine escape, From rushing wind, from storm.

8 “I would hasten to my place of refugeFrom the (O)stormy wind and tempest.”

8 I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest.

8 I would hurry to my shelterfrom the raging wind and the storm.”(I)

8 I want to deliver myself quickly from this windstorm and tempest."

9 Confuse, O My Lord, divide their speech, For I have seen violence and contention in the city;

9 (g)Confuse, O Lord, (P)divide their tongues,For I have seen (Q)violence and strife in the city.

9 Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues: for I have seen violence and strife in the city.

9 Lord, confuse(e) and confound their speech,(f)(J)for I see violence and strife in the city;

9 Confound them, Lord, and confuse their speech, because I have seen violence and strife in the city.

10 Day and night, they go round her, upon her walls, And, trouble and misery, are in her midst;

10 Day and night they go around her upon her walls,And iniquity and mischief are in her midst.

10 Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof: mischief also and sorrow are in the midst of it.

10 day and night they make the rounds on its walls.Crime and trouble are within it;(K)

10 Day and night they prowl around its walls; evil and iniquity are within it.

11 Engulfing ruin, is in her midst, And there depart not from her broadway, oppression and deceit.

11 (R)Destruction is in her midst;(S)Oppression and deceit do not depart from her (h)streets.

11 Wickedness is in the midst thereof: deceit and guile depart not from her streets.

11 destruction is inside it;oppression and deceit never leave its marketplace.(L)

11 Wickedness is at the center of it; fraud and lies never leave its streets.

12 For it is, not an enemy, that reproacheth me, Or I could bear it, - Not one that hath hated me, who, against me, hath magnified himself, Or I might hide myself from him;

12 For it is (T)not an enemy who reproaches me,Then I could bear it;Nor is it one who hates me who (U)has exalted himself against me,Then I could hide myself from him.

12 For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him:

12 Now it is not an enemy who insults me—otherwise I could bear it;it is not a foe who rises up against me—otherwise I could hide from him.

12 For it is not an enemy who insults me I could have handled that nor is it someone who hates me and who now arises against me I could have hidden myself from him

13 But it is, thou, a man esteemed as mine equal, mine associate, and mine acquaintance;

13 But it is you, a man (i)my equal,My (V)companion and my (j)(W)familiar friend;

13 But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.

13 But it is you, a man who is my peer,my companion and good friend!(M)

13 but it is you a man whom I treated as my equal my personal confidant, my close friend!

14 So that together have we been wont to find sweetness in counsel, In the house of God, used we to walk in the throng.

14 We who had sweet (k)fellowship together(X)Walked in the house of God in the throng.

14 We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.

14 We used to have close fellowship;we walked with the crowd into the house of God.(N)

14 We had good fellowship together; and we even walked together in the house of God!

15 Desolations on them! Let them go down into hades alive, For, wicked doings, are at home within them.

15 Let (l)death come (Y)deceitfully upon them;Let them (Z)go down alive to (m)Sheol,For evil is in their dwelling, in their midst.

15 Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.

15 Let death take them by surprise;(O)let them go down to Sheol alive,because evil is in their homes and within them.(P)

15 Let death seize them! May they be plunged alive into the afterlife, for wicked things are in their homes and among them.

16 I, unto God, will cry, - And, Yahweh, will save me.

16 As for me, I shall (AA)call upon God,And the Lord will save me.

16 As for me, I will call upon God; and the LORD shall save me.

16 But I call to God,and the Lord will save me.(Q)

16 I call upon God, and the LORD will deliver me.

17 At evening and morning and high noon, have I been wont to lament and complain, And he hath heard my voice!

17 (AB)Evening and (AC)morning and at (AD)noon, I will complain and murmur,And He will hear my voice.

17 Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.

17 I complain and groan morning, noon, and night,(R)and He hears my voice.(S)

17 Morning, noon, and night, I mulled over these things and cried out in my distress, and he heard my voice.

18 He hath completely redeemed my soul, out of the attack upon me, For, in multitudes, were they in conflict with me.

18 He will (AE)redeem my soul in peace (n)from the battle which is against me,For they are (AF)many who strive with me.

18 He hath delivered my soul in peace from the battle that was against me: for there were many with me.

18 Though many are against me,He will redeem me from my battle unharmed.(T)

18 He calmly ransomed my soul from the war waged against me, for there was a vast crowd who stood against me.

19 GOD will hear, Yea He will humble them who aforetime sat enthroned . Selah.With whom are no changings, Neither have they revered God.

19 God will (AG)hear and (o)answer them—Even the one (AH)who (p)sits enthroned from of old— Selah.With whom there (q)is no change,And who (AI)do not fear God.

19 God shall hear, and afflict them, even he that abideth of old. Selah. Because they have no changes, therefore they fear not God.

19 God, the One enthroned from long ago,(U)will hear and will humiliate themSelahbecause they do not changeand do not fear God.(V)

19 God, who is enthroned from long ago, will hear me and humble them. Interlude Because they do not repent, they do not fear God.

20 He hath thrust forth his hands, against them he was wont to salute, he hath violated his covenant;

20 He has put forth his hands against (AJ)those who were at peace with him;He has (r)(AK)violated his covenant.

20 He hath put forth his hands against such as be at peace with him: he hath broken his covenant.

20 My friend(W) acts violentlyagainst those at peace with him;(X)he violates his covenant.(Y)

20 Each of my friends raises his hand against his allies; each of my friends breaks his word.

21 Smoother than curds, were the words of his mouth, But, war, was in his heart, - Softer his words than oil, Yet, they, were drawn swords!

21 His (s)speech was (AL)smoother than butter,But his heart was war;His words were (AM)softer than oil,Yet they were drawn (AN)swords.

21 The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.

21 His buttery words are smooth,(g)but war is in his heart.His words are softer than oil,but they are drawn swords.(Z)

21 His mouth is as smooth as butter, while war is in his heart. His words were as smooth as olive oil, while his sword is drawn.

22 Cast upon Yahweh thy lot, and, he, will sustain thee: He will not suffer, to times age-abiding, the righteous one to be shaken.

22 (AO)Cast (t)your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you;(AP)He will never allow the righteous to (u)(AQ)be shaken.

22 Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.

22 Cast your burden on the Lord,and He will sustain you;(AA)He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.(AB)

22 Cast on the LORD whatever he sends your way, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.

23 But, thou, O God, wilt bring them down to the pit of destruction, Men of bloodshed and deceit, shall not live out half their days; But, I, will trust in thee.

23 But You, O God, will bring them down to the (v)(AR)pit of destruction;(AS)Men of bloodshed and deceit will (AT)not live out half their days.But I will (AU)trust in You.

23 But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee.

23 God, You will bring them downto the Pit of destruction;(AC)men of bloodshed and treacherywill not live out half their days.(AD)But I will trust in You.(AE)

23 But you, God, bring them down to the Pit of corruption; bloodthirsty and deceitful people will not live out half their days. But I put my full confidence in you. To the Director: A special Davidic psalm to the tune of "A Silent Dove Far Away," when the Philistines seized him in Gath.
