Psalm 78

² I open with a simile my mouth, I bring forth hidden things of old,

² I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:

² I will ^(C)open my mouth in a parable;I will utter ^(D)dark sayings of old,

² I will declare wise sayings;I will speak mysteries from the past^(C)—

² I will tell a parable, speaking riddles from long ago

⁴ We do not hide from their sons, To a later generation recounting praises of Jehovah, And His strength, and His wonders that He hath done.

⁴ We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.

⁴ We will ^(F)not conceal them from their children,But ^(G)tell to the generation to come the praises of the Lord,And His strength and His ^(H)wondrous works that He has done.

⁴ We must not hide them from their children,but must tell a future generationthe praises of the Lord,His might, and the wonderful worksHe has performed.^(E)

⁴ We will not withhold them from their descendants; we'll declare to the next generation the praises of the LORD his might and awesome deeds that he has performed.

⁶ So that a later generation doth know, Sons who are born, do rise and recount to their sons,

⁶ That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:

^{6 (M)}That the generation to come might know, even ^(N)the children yet to be born,That they may arise and ^(O)tell them to their children,

⁶ so that a future generation—children yet to be born—might know.They were to rise and tell their children^(G)

⁶ in order that the next generation children yet to be born will know them and in turn teach them to their children.

⁸ And they are not like their fathers, A generation apostate and rebellious, A generation! it hath not prepared its heart, Nor stedfast with God is its spirit.

⁸ And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.

⁸ And ^(R)not be like their fathers,A ^(S)stubborn and rebellious generation,A generation that ^(T)did not ^(d)prepare its heartAnd whose spirit was not ^(U)faithful to God.

⁸ Then they would not be like their fathers,a stubborn and rebellious generation,a generation whose heart was not loyaland whose spirit was not faithful to God.^(I)

⁸ They will not be like the rebellious generation of their ancestors, a rebellious generation, whose heart was not steadfast, and whose spirits were unfaithful to God.

¹⁰ They have not kept the covenant of God, And in His law they have refused to walk,

¹⁰ They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;

¹⁰ They ^(X)did not keep the covenant of GodAnd refused to ^(Y)walk in His law;

¹⁰ They did not keep God’s covenantand refused to live by His law.^(K)

¹² Before their fathers He hath done wonders, In the land of Egypt -- the field of Zoan.

¹² Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.

¹² He worked wonders in the sight of their fathersin the land of Egypt, the region of Zoan.^(M)

¹² He performed marvelous things in the presence of their ancestors in the land of Egypt in the fields of Zoan.

¹⁴ And leadeth them with a cloud by day, And all the night with a light of fire.

¹⁴ In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.

¹⁴ Then He led them with the cloud by ^(AE)dayAnd all the night with a ^(AF)light of fire.

¹⁴ He led them with a cloud by dayand with a fiery light throughout the night.^(O)

¹⁴ He led them with a cloud during the day, and during the night with light from the fire.

¹⁶ And bringeth out streams from a rock, And causeth waters to come down as rivers.

¹⁶ He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.

¹⁸ And they try God in their heart, To ask food for their lust.

¹⁸ And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.

¹⁸ And in their heart they ^(AJ)put God to the testBy asking ^(AK)food according to their desire.

¹⁸ They deliberately^(a) tested God,demanding the food they craved.^(S)

¹⁸ To test God was in their minds, when they demanded food to satisfy their cravings.

²⁰ Lo, He hath smitten a rock, And waters flow, yea, streams overflow. 'Also -- bread is He able to give? Doth He prepare flesh for His people?'

²⁰ Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?

²⁰ “Behold, He ^(AM)struck the rock so that waters gushed out,And streams were overflowing;Can He give bread also?Will He provide ^(g)(AN)meat for His people?”

²⁰ Look! He struck the rock and water gushed out;torrents overflowed.^(T)But can He also provide breador furnish meat for His people?”^(U)

²⁰ It's true that Moses struck the rock so that water flowed forth and torrents of water gushed out, but is he also able to give bread or to supply meat for his people?"

²² For they have not believed in God, Nor have they trusted in His salvation.

²² Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:

²² Because they ^(AP)did not believe in GodAnd did not trust in His salvation.

²² because they did not believe Godor rely on His salvation.^(W)

²² because they didn't believe in God and didn't trust in his deliverance.

²⁴ And He raineth on them manna to eat, Yea, corn of heaven He hath given to them.

²⁴ And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.

²⁴ He ^(AR)rained down manna upon them to eatAnd gave them ^(i)(AS)food from heaven.

²⁴ He rained manna for them to eat;He gave them grain from heaven.^(Y)

²⁴ so that manna rained down on them for food and he sent them the grain of heaven.

²⁶ He causeth an east wind to journey in the heavens, And leadeth by His strength a south wind,

²⁶ He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.

²⁶ He ^(AU)caused the east wind to blow in the heavensAnd by His ^(m)power He directed the south wind.

²⁶ He made the east wind blow in the skiesand drove the south wind by His might.^(AA)

²⁶ He stirred up the east wind in the heavens and drove the south wind by his might.

²⁸ And causeth it to fall in the midst of His camp, Round about His tabernacles.

²⁸ And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.

²⁸ Then He let them fall in the midst of ^(o)their camp,Round about their dwellings.

²⁸ He made them fall in His camp,all around His tent.^(d)(e)(AB)

²⁸ He caused these to fall in the middle of the camp and all around their tents.

³⁰ They have not been estranged from their desire, Yet is their food in their mouth,

³⁰ They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths,

³² With all this they have sinned again, And have not believed in His wonders.

³² For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works.

³² Despite all this, they kept sinningand did not believe His wonderful works.^(AE)

³² In spite of all of this, they kept on sinning and didn't believe in his marvelous deeds.

³⁴ If He slew them, then they sought Him, And turned back, and sought God earnestly,

³⁴ When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and inquired early after God.

³⁴ When He killed them, then they ^(BD)sought Him,And returned and searched ^(BE)diligently for God;

³⁴ When He killed some of them,the rest began to seek Him;they repented and searched for God.^(AG)

³⁴ When he struck them, they sought him; they repented, and eagerly sought God.

³⁶ And -- they deceive Him with their mouth, And with their tongue do lie to Him,

³⁶ Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.

³⁶ But they ^(BH)deceived Him with their mouthAnd ^(BI)lied to Him with their tongue.

³⁶ But they deceived Him with their mouths,they lied to Him with their tongues,^(AI)

³⁸ And He -- the Merciful One, Pardoneth iniquity, and destroyeth not, And hath often turned back His anger, And waketh not up all His fury.

³⁸ But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.

³⁸ But He, being ^(BK)compassionate, ^(t)(BL)forgave their iniquity and did not destroy them;And often He ^(u)(BM)restrained His angerAnd did not arouse all His wrath.

³⁸ Yet He was compassionate;He atoned for^(f) their guiltand did not destroy them.He often turned His anger asideand did not unleash^(g) all His wrath.^(AK)

³⁸ But he, being merciful, forgave their iniquity and didn't destroy them; He restrained his anger and didn't vent all his wrath.

⁴⁰ How often do they provoke Him in the wilderness, Grieve Him in the desolate place?

⁴⁰ How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!

⁴⁰ How often they ^(BQ)rebelled against Him in the wildernessAnd ^(BR)grieved Him in the ^(BS)desert!

⁴⁰ How often they rebelled against Himin the wildernessand grieved Him in the desert.

⁴⁰ How they rebelled against him in the desert, grieving him in the wilderness!

⁴² They have not remembered His hand The day He ransomed them from the adversary.

⁴² They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy.

⁴² They did not remember His power shownon the day He redeemed them from the foe,^(AO)

⁴² They did not remember his power the day he delivered them from their adversary,

⁴⁴ And He turneth to blood their streams, And their floods they drink not.

⁴⁴ And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink.

⁴⁴ And ^(CA)turned their rivers to blood,And their streams, they could not drink.

⁴⁶ And giveth to the caterpillar their increase, And their labour to the locust.

⁴⁶ He gave also their increase unto the caterpiller, and their labour unto the locust.

⁵⁰ He pondereth a path for His anger, He kept not back their soul from death, Yea, their life to the pestilence He delivered up.

⁵⁰ He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence;

⁵⁰ He leveled a path for His anger;He did not spare their soul from death,But ^(CI)gave over their life to the plague,

⁵⁰ He cleared a path for His anger.He did not spare them from deathbut delivered their lives to the plague.^(AW)

⁵⁰ He blazed a path for his anger; he did not stop short from killing them, but handed them over to pestilence.

⁵² And causeth His people to journey as a flock, And guideth them as a drove in a wilderness,

⁵² But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.

⁵² But He ^(CM)led forth His own people like sheepAnd guided them in the wilderness ^(CN)like a flock;

⁵² He led His people out like sheepand guided them like a flock in the wilderness.^(AZ)

⁵² Yet he led out his people like sheep, guiding them like a flock in the desert.

⁵⁴ And He bringeth them in unto the border of His sanctuary, This mountain His right hand had got,

⁵⁴ And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, even to this mountain, which his right hand had purchased.

⁵⁴ So ^(CQ)He brought them to His holy ^(aa)land,To this ^(ab)(CR)hill country ^(CS)which His right hand had gained.

⁵⁴ He brought them to His holy land,to the mountain His right hand acquired.^(BB)

⁵⁴ He brought the people to the border of his holy mountain, which he acquired by his might.

⁵⁶ And they tempt and provoke God Most High, And His testimonies have not kept.

⁵⁶ Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies:

⁵⁶ Yet they ^(ac)(CV)tempted and ^(CW)rebelled against the Most High GodAnd did not keep His testimonies,

⁵⁶ But they rebelliously tested the Most High God,for they did not keep His decrees.^(BE)

⁵⁶ But they tested the Most High God by rebelling against him, and they did not obey his statutes.

⁵⁸ And make Him angry with their high places, And with their graven images make Him zealous,

⁵⁸ For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.

⁵⁸ For they ^(CZ)provoked Him with their ^(DA)high placesAnd ^(DB)aroused His jealousy with their ^(DC)graven images.

⁵⁸ They enraged Him with their high placesand provoked His jealousy with their carved images.^(BG)

⁵⁸ they angered him with their high places and with their carved images they made him jealous.

⁶⁰ And He leaveth the tabernacle of Shiloh, The tent He had placed among men,

⁶⁰ So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men;

⁶⁰ So that He ^(DF)abandoned the ^(DG)dwelling place at Shiloh,The tent ^(ae)which He had pitched among men,

⁶⁰ He abandoned the tabernacle at Shiloh,the tent where He resided among men.^(j)(BI)

⁶⁰ He abandoned the tent at Shiloh, the tent that he established among mankind.

⁶² And delivereth up to the sword His people, And with His inheritance shewed Himself angry.

⁶² He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance.

⁶² He also ^(DJ)delivered His people to the sword,And ^(af)was filled with wrath at His inheritance.

⁶² He surrendered His people to the swordbecause He was enraged with His heritage.^(BK)

⁶² He delivered his people over to the sword and was angry with his possession.

⁶⁴ His priests by the sword have fallen, And their widows weep not.

⁶⁴ Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation.

⁶⁶ And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach.

⁶⁶ He beat back His foes;He gave them lasting shame.^(BO)

⁶⁸ And He chooseth the tribe of Judah, With mount Zion that He loved,

⁶⁸ But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.
