John, The First Epistle General of.
There can be no doubt that the apostle John was the author of this epistle. It was probably written from Ephesus, and most likely at the close of the first century. In the introduction, ch.
the apostle states the purpose of his epistle: it is to declare the word of life to those whom he is addressing, in order that he and they might be united in true communion with each other, and with God the Father and his Son Jesus Christ. His lesson throughout is that the means of union with God are, on the part of Christ, his atoning blood, ch.

That which was from the beginning, declare we unto you; which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the word of life. For the life appeared: and we have seen, and bear witness, and show unto you that eternal life, which was with the father, and appeared unto us. read more. And every man that hath this hope in him, purgeth himself, even as he is pure.
And ye know that he appeared to take away our sins, and there is no sin in him.
We know that we are translated from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother, abideth in death.
And this is his commandment, that we believe on the name of his son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave commandment.
And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is not of God. And the same is that spirit of antichrist, of whom ye have heard, how that he should come: and even now already is he in the world.
Dearly beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God. And all that love are born of God, and knoweth God.
Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his son to make a satisfaction for our sins.
And we have seen and do testify that the father hath sent his son, which is the saviour of the world.
All that believe that Jesus is Christ, are born of God. And all that loveth him which begat, loveth him also which was begotten of him.
Who is it that overcometh the world: but he which believeth that Jesus is the son of God? This Jesus Christ is he that came by water and blood, not by water only: but by water and blood.
