to a maiden who was betrothed to a man called Joseph, belonging to the house of David. The maiden's name was Mary.

He will be great, he will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father;

he has raised up a strong saviour for us in the house of his servant David

and as Joseph belonged to the house and family of David he went up from Galilee to Judaea, from the town of Nazaret to David's town called Bethlehem,

To-day you have a saviour born in the town of David, the Lord messiah.

the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David,

But Jesus answered them, "And have you never read what David did when he and his men were hungry?

So he shouted, "Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me!"

The people in front checked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, "Son of David, have pity on me!"

But he said to them, "How can people say that the Christ is David's son?

Why, David himself says in the book of psalms, The Lord said to my Lord, 'Sit at my right hand,

David then calls him Lord. So how can he be his son?"
