Wherefore it is necessary that one of these men, who have been conversant with us all the time that the Lord Jesus came in and out among us, from the baptism of John, till the day that He was taken up from us, should be joined with us as a witness of his resurrection.

And we are witnesses of all things that He did, both in the country of Judea, and in the city of Jerusalem: whom notwithstanding they put to death, hanging Him on a tree. Him God raised up the third day, and gave Him to be seen openly; not to all the people, but to witnesses before appointed by God, even to us, who did eat and drink with Him, after He rose from the dead.

and He was seen for many days by those that came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses to the people.

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have contemplated, and our very hands have felt concerning the Word of life, (for this Life was manifested, and we saw it; and we testify and declare unto you that eternal Life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us) what we have seen and heard we declare unto you, that ye also may have communion with us: and our communion is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.

as they delivered them to us, who were from the beginning eye-witnesses of them, and ministers of the word;

from the baptism of John, till the day that He was taken up from us, should be joined with us as a witness of his resurrection.

Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? and are not ye my work in the Lord?

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have contemplated, and our very hands have felt concerning the Word of life,

from the baptism of John, till the day that He was taken up from us, should be joined with us as a witness of his resurrection.

Then went, out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the country about Jordan, and they were baptized by him in Jordan, confessing their sins. But when he saw many of the pharisees and sadducees coming to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? read more.
Bring forth therefore fruits becoming: penitents: and do not say within your selves,

Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized by him: but John refused Him, saying, I have need to be baptized by thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Permit it now; for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. read more.
Then he permitted Him. And Jesus as soon as He was baptized came up from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened unto Him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and coming upon Him:

The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves saying, If we say, from heaven, He will reply, Why then did ye not believe him?

and preaching the baptism of repentance in order to the remission of sins; and all the country of Judea, and those of Jerusalem, went out to him, and were all baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

I indeed have baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the holy Spirit. And in those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in Jordan: and as soon as He came up from the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him.

The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men? answer me.

Therefore said he to the multitudes that came to be baptised by him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore fruits becoming penitents, and do not say within yourselves, "We have Abraham for our father," for I tell you that God can of these stones raise up children to Abraham.

And there came publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?

---and all the people that heard him, even the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John; but the pharisees indeed and the lawyers rejected the counsel of God within themselves, and were not baptized by him.---

Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?

and they asked him, and said to him, Why then dost thou baptize, if thou art not the Christ, nor Elias, nor a prophet? John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;

These things passed at Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

And I knew Him not: but He that sent me to baptize with water, said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and abiding on Him, the same is he that baptizeth with the Holy Spirit.

And John also was baptizing in Enon near Salim; because there was much water there: and people came to him and were baptized.

to the place where John was at first baptizing, and there He abode.

Ye know the report that was spread through all Judea, having begun from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached: concerning Jesus of Nazareth,

Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the holy Spirit.

And he said unto them, Into what then were ye baptized? And they said, Into the baptism of John. Then said Paul, John indeed baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people, that they should believe in Him that was coming after him, that is, in Christ Jesus.

Wherefore it is necessary that one of these men, who have been conversant with us all the time that the Lord Jesus came in and out among us, from the baptism of John, till the day that He was taken up from us, should be joined with us as a witness of his resurrection. And they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.

About this time went one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, to the chief priests, and said, What will ye give me, and I will deliver Him to you? and they promised him thirty pieces of silver: and from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him.

Then Judas, who had betrayed Him, when he saw that He was condemned, being struck with remorse, brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, saying, I have sinned, for I have betrayed innocent blood: but they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. And he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.

And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests, in order to betray Him unto them. And they were glad, when they heard it, and engaged to give him money. And he sought to betray Him at a proper season.

And while He was yet speaking, behold, Judas one of the twelve came, and with him a great number, with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people: (now he that betrayed Him, had given them a signal, saying, The man whom I shall kiss is He, lay hold of Him:) and going directly up to Jesus, he said, Hail master, and kissed Him. read more.
And Jesus said to him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? then they came up and laid hands on Jesus, and apprehended Him.

Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the passover. And the chief priests and scribes were consulting how they might put Him to death; for they were afraid of the people. Then entred Satan into Judas who was surnamed Iscariot, one of the twelve. read more.
And he went and conferred with the chief priests and the captains, how he might betray Him unto them. And they were glad and agreed to give him money: and he accepted the terms, and sought an opportunity to betray Him unto them in the absence of the multitude.

Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? Now He spake of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon; for he was about to betray Him, though he was one of the twelve apostles.

Now before the feast of the passover, (Jesus knowing that his hour was come, when He should pass out of this world unto the Father, as He had loved his own, who were yet in the world, He loved them unto the end:) supper being prepared, (the devil having put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him) Jesus,

When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with his disciples over the brook Kedron; where there was a garden, into which He entred, and his disciples. Now Judas who was gone to betray Him, knew the place: for Jesus often met there together with his disciples: Judas therefore having got a band of soldiers, and officers from the chief priests and pharisees, cometh thither with candles, and lamps, and arms. read more.
Upon which Jesus, who knew all that was coming upon Him, went forth and said unto them, Whom do ye seek? They answered Him, Jesus the Nazarene. Jesus saith unto them, I am He. And Judas that betrayed Him, was standing with them.

And immediately while He was yet speaking cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests, and scribes, and elders: (Now the traitor had given them a sign, saying, The man, whom I shall kiss, is He; lay hold of Him and lead Him away safely:) and as soon as he came, he went directly up to Him and said, Master, Master; and kissed Him.

And while He was yet speaking, behold a multitude; and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve apostles, came before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss Him: and Jesus said to him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss? But when they that were about Him saw what would follow, they said to Him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?

Jesus saith unto them, I am He. And Judas that betrayed Him, was standing with them.

and said, Men and brethren, it was necessary that this scripture should be fulfilled, which the holy Ghost spake by the mouth of David, concerning Judas, who was guide to them that apprehended Jesus: for he was numbered with us, and had obtained a part of this ministry. (Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling down on his face, burst asunder in the middle, and all his bowels gushed out: read more.
(and it was known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field is called in their own dialect, Aceldama, that is, the field of blood:) for it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let none dwell in it; and again, Let another take his office.) And they prayed and said, Thou, Lord, who knowest the hearts of all, shew us, which of these two Thou hast chosen, to take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas is fallen by his transgression, that he might go to his own place.

And in these days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, (now the number of the persons that were together was about an hundred and twenty,) and said, Men and brethren, it was necessary that this scripture should be fulfilled, which the holy Ghost spake by the mouth of David, concerning Judas, who was guide to them that apprehended Jesus: for he was numbered with us, and had obtained a part of this ministry. read more.
