Whereas many have undertaken to compose a narrative of the things, which have been fully certified among us; as they delivered them to us, who were from the beginning eye-witnesses of them, and ministers of the word; it seemed good to me also, having thoroughly traced them all from the very first, to write an account of them in order to thee,read more.
most excellent Theophilus, that thou mayst know the certainty of the things wherein thou hast been instructed.
This is the disciple that testifieth of these things, and that writeth them: and we know that his testimony is true.
The former treatise, O Theophilus, I made concerning all that Jesus undertook both to do and to teach; till the day in which He was taken up, after He had by the holy Spirit given instructions to the apostles whom He had chosen:
For in the first place I delivered to you, that which I also received, to wit, that Christ died for our sins, according to the scriptures: and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day, according to the scriptures. And that he was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve:read more.
after that He appeared to above five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain yet alive, but some are fallen asleep. Afterwards He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. And last of all He appeared to me also, as one born out of due time: for I am the lest of the apostles,
For we did not follow artfully devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ; but were eye-witnesses of his majesty.
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have contemplated, and our very hands have felt concerning the Word of life, (for this Life was manifested, and we saw it; and we testify and declare unto you that eternal Life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us) what we have seen and heard we declare unto you, that ye also may have communion with us: and our communion is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.read more.
And these things we write unto you, that your joy may be complete.
Then He opened their mind, to understand the scriptures: and said unto them, thus it is written, and thus it was necessary that the Christ should suffer, and rise again from the dead on the third day; and that in his name should be preached repentance and remission of sins to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.read more.
And ye are witnesses of these things: and I will send upon you the promise of my Father;
And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.
But ye shall receive power from the holy Spirit coming upon you: and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria, and to the uttermost part of the earth.
This Jesus hath God raised up from the dead, of which we all are witnesses.
And while they were speaking to the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the sadducees came upon them, being vexed that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead. And they laid hands on them, and put them into custody till the next day: for it was now evening.read more.
But many of them who heard the word, believed: and the number of the men was about five thousand. And on the morrow their rulers, and elders, and scribes were gathered together at Jerusalem: and with them Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest. And when they had set them in the midst, they asked them, By what power, or in what name have ye done this? Then Peter filled with the holy Spirit said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, if we are this day examined about the benefit done to the impotent man, by what means he is cured, be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, but whom God hath raised from the dead, even by Him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone that was set at nought by you builders, which is become the head of the corner. And there is salvation in no other; for there is no other name under heaven given among men, by which we can be saved. Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were plain and illiterate men, they were amazed; and they knew them again that they had been with Jesus: but seeing the man that was cured standing with them, they had nothing to say against it. Therefore they ordered them to withdraw from the council, and conferred among themselves, saying, What shall we do with these men? for that indeed an evident miracle hath been wrought by them is manifest to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. But that it may spread no farther among the people, let us severely charge them to speak no more to any man in this name. So they called them and commanded them not to speak at all, nor teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered them, and said, Whether it be right in the sight of God to obey you rather than God, judge ye: for we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.
and we are his witnesses of what we declare; and so is the holy Spirit, whom God hath given to them that obey Him.
But God raised Him from the dead: and He was seen for many days by those that came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses to the people.
how shall we escape, if we neglect so great a salvation? which began to be declared by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by them that heard Him; God also testifying together with them by signs, and wonders, and divers miracles, and gifts of the holy Spirit, according to his own will.
The elders that are among you I exhort, who am also an elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker of the glory which shall be revealed; feed the flock of God that is among you,
And we have seen, and do testify, that the Father hath sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.
And every day in the temple and from house to house they ceased not from teaching and preaching that Jesus was the Christ.
But how shall they call upon him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe on him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? and how shall they preach unless they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of those who bring the good tidings of peace, who bring the good tidings of good things?
Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached to you at first, which ye received, and wherein ye stand. By which also ye are saved, if ye retain it as I preached it to you: unless indeed ye have believed in vain.
On me, who am less than the least of all saints, was this grace bestowed, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and make all men to see the communication of the mystery, which from the ages past hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ;
But as they believed Philip, preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women;
For, since in the wisdom of God the world by it's wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by what they called the folly of preaching to save those that believe.
But only they had heard that he who persecuted us before, now preacheth the faith which he formerly would have destroyed.
preach the word, be instant both in season and out of season; convince, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and instruction.
Remember your guides, who spake the word of God to you; whose faith imitate, considering the happy end of their conversation.
But the comforter, that is the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said unto you.
But when the comforter is come, whom I will send to you from the Father, (even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father,) He shall testify of me.
I have yet many things to say to you, but ye cannot bear them now. But when the Spirit of truth is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He will not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that will He speak, and will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me, for He shall take of mine and shew it unto you.read more.
All that the Father hath are mine: therefore I said, that He shall take of mine and shew it unto you.
This is He that came by water and by blood, even Jesus the Messiah; not with water only, but with water and blood: and of this the Spirit beareth witness, for the Spirit is truth.
