The soldiers therefore took Paul as they were commanded and brought him by night to Antipatris, and the next day leaving the horsemen to go with him, they returned to the fortress. And when they came to Caesarea, and had delivered the letter to the procurator, they also presented Paul to him.

the chiliarch commanded him to be brought into the fortress, ordering that he should be examined with scourges, that he might know for what reason they cried so against him. But when they extended him with cords, he said to the centurion standing by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man, a Roman, and uncondemned?
