He spake a parable to them, saying, The farm of a certain rich man was very productive: and he was reasoning in himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no place where I shall store my fruits? And he said, I will do this: I will take down my barns, and build greater, and there I will gather all my fruits and my goods. read more.
And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry. There was a certain rich man, and he was habitually clothed in purple and fine linen, faring sumptuously every day. And he calling said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue, because I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Child, remember that you received your good things in your life, and Lazarus likewise evil things: but now he is comforted, and you are tormented. And he said, Moreover I intreat you, father, that you may send him to the house of my father: for I have five brothers; in order that he may testify to them, that they may not also come to this place of the torment. But Abraham says, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. But he said, No, father Abraham: but if one may go to them from the dead, they will repent. But he said to him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, they will not be persuaded if one may rise from the dead.
