and regardeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and snatcheth away that which was sown in his heart: this is he who received the seed as by the way-side. And he who received the seed as upon stony grounds, is one that heareth the word and immediately receiveth it with joy: yet hath he no root in himself, and therefore is but for a short season; and when affliction cometh, or persecution on account of the word, he is as soon disgusted. read more.
And he that received the seed among the thorns, is one that likewise heareth the word; but the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches choketh the word, and so it becometh unfruitful.

where the word is sown; but when they have heard it, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts. And in like manner, they that are sown as on stony grounds are such, as when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy, but have no root in themselves, and so continue but for a short season: and then, when affliction cometh, or persecution on account of the word, they are as soon offended. read more.
And those that are sown as among thorns, are these: such as hear the word indeed, but the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and inordinate desires after other things entering in choke the word, and so it becometh unfruitful.

For there are many disorderly persons, vain-talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision; whose mouths must be stopped: who subvert whole families, teaching what they ought not, for shameful gain: as said one of themselves, a prophet of their own, "The Cretans are always liars, mischievous beasts, sluggish gluttons." read more.
This testimony is true: for which cause rebuke them sharply, that they may be found in the faith; not attending to Jewish fables, and the precepts of men who turn away from the truth. To the pure indeed all things are pure; but to the polluted and unbelieving nothing is pure; even their mind and conscience is polluted. They profess to know God, but in works deny Him, being abominable and disobedient, and to every thing that is good void of understanding.

But He answered them, Well did Esaias prophesy concerning you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me: and in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the injunctions of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye retain the tradition of men, as the washings of pots and cups, and many other such like things. read more.
And ye expressly annul the commandment of God, that ye may retain your own tradition;

and those by the way-side, are such as hear indeed; but then the devil cometh and taketh away the word from their hearts, least they should believe and be saved. And those on stony-ground are such as when they hear, receive the word with joy; but have no root, and so believe only for a while, and in the time of trial fall away. And that which fell among thorns, are those who when they have heard the word go away and are choked with the cares and riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to perfection.

Jesus answered and said unto him, If any one love me, he will observe my word: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and will make our abode with him. He that doth not love me, doth not observe my words: and yet the word that ye hear, is not mine, but the Father's who hath sent me.

And ye expressly annul the commandment of God, that ye may retain your own tradition; for Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, He that revileth father or mother, let him be put to death: but ye say, If a man tell his father or mother, That which thou mightest be profited by from me is Corban, (that is, a gift to the temple) it sufficeth: and so ye allow him to do nothing more for his father or his mother: making void the word of God by your tradition,. But He answered and said, Every plantation which my heavenly Father hath not planted shall be rooted up. Regard them not; for they are blind guides of the blind: and if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into the ditch. Then Peter answered, and said unto Him, Explain to us this parable. And Jesus replied, Are ye also still void of understanding? Do ye not yet know, that whatever goeth into the mouth passeth to the belly and is discharged downwards? But the things, which proceed out of the mouth, come from the heart, and those defile a man. And He saith unto them, Are ye so void of understanding also? Do ye not know, that whatsoever from without entreth into a man cannot defile him? because it entreth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all his food. And so disagreeing one with another they separated, when Paul had said one word, to wit, that the holy Spirit spake rightly by Esaias the prophet to our fathers, saying, Go to this people and say, Ye shall hear by the hearing of the ear, and not understand; and in seeing ye shall see, and not perceive: for the heart of this people is stupified, and they hear heavily with their ears, and have closed their eyes; least they should see at all with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

About this time as Jesus passed through the cornfields on the sabbath-day, his disciples being hungry began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat them. And when the pharisees saw it they said to Him, See, thy disciples are doing what is not lawful for them to do on the sabbath. But He replied, Have ye not read what David did, when he, and his attendants, were hungry? how he went into the house of God, read more.
and did eat the shew-bread, which it was not lawful for him to eat, nor those that were with him; but for the priests only? or have ye not read in the law, what profane sort of work the priests do in the temple on the sabbath-days, and yet are blameless? But I tell you, that a greater than the temple is here: and if ye had known what that scripture means, "I desire mercy rather than sacrifice," ye would not have condemned the guiltless. For the Son of man is lord even of the sabbath.

And it came to pass on the second-sabbath after the first, that as He was passing through the corn-fields, his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and rubbed them in their hands and ate them. And some of the pharisees said to them, Why do ye do that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath-days? And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read what David did, when he himself was hungry and those that were with him? how he went into the house of God, read more.
and did take and eat the shew-bread, and gave also to his attendants, which it is not lawful for any to eat but the priests. And He said unto them, the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath. And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that He went into a synagogue and taught; and there was a man there, whose right hand was withered. And the scribes and pharisees watched Him to see if He would work a cure on the sabbath: that they might find an accusation against Him. But He knew their thoughts, and said to the man that had the withered hand, Rise, and stand in the midst: and he rose up and stood forth. Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing, Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to let it be lost? And looking round upon them all, He said to the man, Stretch out thine hand: and he did so, and his hand was made as sound as the other. And they were filled with confusion: and consulted together, what they might do to Jesus.
