the hireling flies, because he is an hireling, and is under no concern for the sheep. I am the true pastor, I know my sheep, and my sheep know me,
for if a man is incapable of governing his own family, how can he take care of the church of God?
Hear another parable: a certain landlord planted a vineyard, hedged it round, set up a wine-press in it, and built a tower, then lett it out to tenants, and went into a foreign country. and when the fruit-season came on, he sent his servants to the tenants, to receive the fruits of it.
Then Jesus address'd himself to them in this parabolical manner. a certain person planted a vineyard, made a fence about it, clear'd the way for a wine-press, built a tower, and committed it to the care of vine-dressers, while he was travelling abroad. at the time of vintage he sent his servant to the vine-dressers to receive the profits of his vineyard.
now what will the master of the vineyard do? on his return, said they, he will destroy those vine-dressers, and give his vineyard to others.
Then he propos'd this parable to the people, a man planted a vineyard, let it out to husbandmen, and then went a travelling for some time. at vintage, he sent a servant to the husbandmen, to demand the profits of the vineyard. but they beat him and sent him away empty.
he will come and destroy these husbandmen, and give his vineyard to others. but they, taking the hint, cried out, God forbid.
O Timothy, keep what is deposited in your care, avoiding the prophane empty declamations and objections of a spurious science, which some have profess'd,
You husband, love your spouse, even as Christ loved the church, and laid down his life for her:
he that takes no care of his relations, especially those of his own family, has renounc'd the faith and is worse than an infidel.
but I declare unto you, that men shall give an account at the day of judgment, of every scandalous expression they utter.
the Lord is coming: be not in any manner of sollicitude, but in all your occasions lay your requests before God by prayer and supplication accompany'd by thanksgiving.
therefore make no such sollicitous enquiries, as what shall we eat? or what shall we drink? or how shall we be clothed? things which the Gentiles are so thoughtful about, and which your heavenly Father knows that you want.

he that is meant by the thorny ground, where other seed fell, is one that heareth the word: which by cares of this life, and the deceitful love of riches, is soon stifled, and becomes unfruitful:
as for those, who receive seed as among thorns: they are such as hear the word. but the cares of this life, the deceitful love of riches, and a crowd of different passions, stifle the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
the ground over-run with thorns denotes such as have embraced the doctrine, but are so immerst in the business, enjoyments, and pleasures of life, as not to improve it to any real advantage.
but Martha perplex'd with the hurry of her affairs, came to him, and said, Lord, don't you observe my sister has left me to serve all alone: direct her therefore to give me some assistance. but Jesus replied to her, Martha, Martha, you trouble yourself about a world of cares: but the best and the most necessary concern is, what Mary has pitch'd upon, of which she shall never be deprived.
set a guard upon yourselves, that ye be not stupified by surfeiting and drunkenness, or by the disquietudes of this life, and so that day come upon you with a surprize.
the unmarried is religiously concerned, how he may please the Lord: he that is married is worldly concern'd, how he may please his wife. there is the same difference between a married woman and a virgin: the last is religiously concern'd to be holy, both in body and mind: but she that is married is taken up with worldly cares to please her husband.
Believe in me, all ye that labour under oppression, and I will give you relief. take my yoke upon you, and learn to be meek like me, and of an humble temper: and ye shall enjoy tranquillity of mind.
when you are brought into the synagogues, and before magistrates and rulers, be not sollicitous what to say in your own defence; for the holy spirit shall instruct you on the very occasion, what is proper to be said.
