'Heart' in the Bible

Wash the evil from your heart, Jerusalem,so that you will be delivered.How long will you harbormalicious thoughts within you?

Your way of life and your actionshave brought this on you.This is your punishment. It is very bitter,because it has reached your heart!

My anguish, my anguish! I writhe in agony!Oh, the pain in my heart!My heart pounds;I cannot be silent.For you, my soul,have heard the sound of the ram’s horn—the shout of battle.

Yet they didn’t listen or pay attention but followed their own advice and according to their own stubborn, evil heart. They went backward and not forward.

My joy has flown away;grief has settled on me.My heart is sick.

Egypt, Judah, Edom, the Ammonites, Moab, and all the inhabitants of the desert who clip the hair on their temples. All these nations are uncircumcised, and the whole house of Israel is uncircumcised in heart.”

Yet they would not obey or pay attention; each one followed the stubbornness of his evil heart. So I brought on them all the curses of this covenant, because they had not done what I commanded them to do.”

But, Lord of Hosts, who judges righteously,who tests heart and mind,let me see Your vengeance on them,for I have presented my case to You.

As for You, Lord, You know me; You see me.You test whether my heart is with You.Drag the wicked away like sheep to slaughterand set them apart for the day of killing.

They have made it a desolation.It mourns, desolate, before Me.All the land is desolate,but no one takes it to heart.

Your words were found, and I ate them.Your words became a delight to meand the joy of my heart,for I am called by Your name,Yahweh God of Hosts.

You did more evil than your fathers. Look, each one of you was following the stubbornness of his evil heart, not obeying Me.

This is what the Lord says:The man who trusts in mankind,who makes human flesh his strengthand turns his heart from the Lord is cursed.

The heart is more deceitful than anything else,and incurable—who can understand it?

I, Yahweh, examine the mind,I test the heartto give to each according to his way,according to what his actions deserve.

But they will say, ‘It’s hopeless. We will continue to follow our plans, and each of us will continue to act according to the stubbornness of his evil heart.’”

If I say, “I won’t mention Himor speak any longer in His name,”His message becomes a fire burning in my heart,shut up in my bones.I become tired of holding it in,and I cannot prevail.

Lord of Hosts, testing the righteousand seeing the heart and mind,let me see Your vengeance on them,for I have presented my case to You.

But you have eyes and a heart for nothingexcept your own dishonest profit,shedding innocent bloodand committing extortion and oppression.

Concerning the prophets:My heart is broken within me,and all my bones tremble.I have become like a drunkard,like a man overcome by wine,because of the Lord,because of His holy words.

They keep on saying to those who despise Me, ‘The Lord has said: You will have peace.’ They have said to everyone who follows the stubbornness of his heart, ‘No harm will come to you.’”

The Lord’s anger will not turn backuntil He has completely fulfilled the purposes of His heart.In time to come you will understand it clearly.

I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am Yahweh. They will be My people, and I will be their God because they will return to Me with all their heart.

You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.

The Lord’s burning anger will not turn backuntil He has completely fulfilled the purposes of His heart.In time to come you will understand it.

I will give them one heart and one way so that for their good and for the good of their descendants after them, they will fear Me always.

I will take delight in them to do what is good for them, and with all My heart and mind I will faithfully plant them in this land.

We have heard of Moab’s pride,great pride, indeed—his insolence, arrogance, pride,and haughty heart.

Therefore, My heart moans like flutes for Moab, and My heart moans like flutes for the people of Kir-heres. And therefore, the wealth he has gained has perished.

The towns have been captured,and the strongholds seized.In that day the heart of Moab’s warriorswill be like the heart of a woman with contractions.

As to the terror you cause,your presumptuous heart has deceived you.You who live in the clefts of the rock,you who occupy the mountain summit,though you elevate your nest like the eagle,even from there I will bring you down.This is the Lord’s declaration.

Look! It will be like an eagle soaring upward, then swooping down and spreading its wings over Bozrah. In that day the hearts of Edom’s warriors will be like the heart of a woman with contractions.
