'High priest' in the Bible
He that is the high priest among his brethren, upon whose head the anointing oil was poured and whose hand was filled to put on the vestments, shall not uncover his head nor rent his clothes,
And the congregation shall deliver the slayer out of the hand of the judge of blood, and shall restore him again unto the franchised city whither he was fled. And he shall bide there unto the death of the high priest which was anointed with holy oil.
because he should have bidden in his free town until the death of the high priest, and after the death of the high priest, he shall return again unto the land of his possession.
Also ye shall take none atonement for him that is fled to a free city, that he should come again and dwell in the land before the death of the high priest.
And he shall dwell in the said city until he stand before the congregation in judgment, and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days. And then shall the slayer return and come unto his own city and unto his own house, and unto the city from whence he fled.'"
And when they saw that there was much money in the coffer, the king's scribe and the high priest came, and knit up the money that was found in the house of the LORD, after they had told it.
"Go to Hilkiah the high priest, and let him sum the silver that is brought into the house of the LORD, which the keepers of the doors have gathered of the people;
And Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, "I have found the book of the law in the temple of the LORD." And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it.
And Hilkiah the high priest and Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went unto Huldah the Prophetess, wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah the son of Harahas keeper of the robes - which Prophetess dwelt in Jerusalem in the second ward - and communed with her.
And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest and the inferior priests and the keepers of the door, to bring out of the temple of the LORD, all the vessels that were made for Baal and for the grove and for all the host of heaven. And he burnt them without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron and carried the ashes of them into Bethel.
And when the time came that the chest should be brought in by the hands of the Levites at the appointment of the king, when they saw that there was much money: then came the king's scribe and one appointed by the high priest, and poured out that was in the coffer, and then took it and carried it to his place again, and thus they did day by day, and gathered much money.
And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, men delivered them the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites that kept the entries had gathered of the hands of Manasseh and Ephraim and of all that yet remained in Israel and of all Judah and Benjamin and of the inhabiters of Jerusalem.
And Eliashib the high priest gat him up with his brethren the priests, and builded the Sheep-gate. They hallowed it, and set up the doors of it: even unto the tower of Meah hallowed they it, namely unto the tower of Hananel.
After him Baruch the son of Zabbai builded the other piece worshipfully and costly, from the corner unto the door of the house of Eliashib the high priest.
And one of the children of Jehoiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, had made a contract with Sanballat the Horonite: but I chased him from me.
The chief Captain also took Seraiah the high priest, and Zephaniah that was chief next him, and the three keepers of the treasury.

"Speak to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel prince of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jozadak the high priest, and to the residue of the people, and say,
Nevertheless be of good cheer, O Zerubbabel, sayeth the LORD; be of good comfort, O Joshua thou son of Jozadak, high priest: take good hearts unto you also, all ye people of the land, sayeth the LORD of Hosts,
And he showed me Joshua the high priest, standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan stood at his righthand to resist him.
"'Hear O Joshua thou high priest: thou and thy friends that dwell before thee, for they are wondrous people. Behold, I will bring forth the branch of my servant:
Then take gold and silver, and make crowns thereof, and set them upon the head of Joshua the son of Jozadak, the high priest.
Then assembled together the chief priests and the scribes and the elders of the people into the palace of the high priest, called Caiaphas:
And behold, one of them which were with Jesus, stretched out his hand and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest, and smote off his ear.
And they took Jesus and led him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.
And Peter followed him afar off, unto the high priest's place: and went in, and sat with the servants to see the end.
Then the high priest rent his clothes saying, "He hath blasphemed: what need we of any more witnesses? Behold, now have ye heard his blasphemy:
How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the hallowed loaves, which is not lawful but for the priests only to eat: and gave also to them which were with him?"
And one of them that stood by drew out a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
And Peter followed him a great way off, even into the palace of the high priest, and he was there and sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire.
Then took they him, and led him, and brought him to the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off.
And one of them named Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year, said unto them, "Ye perceive nothing at all:
This spake he not of himself: but being high priest that same year, prophesied he that Jesus should die for the people,
Simon Peter had a sword, and drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
and led him away to Annas, first: For he was father-in-law unto Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.
And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and another disciple: that disciple was known of the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.
But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple which was known unto the high priest, and spake to the damsel that kept the door, and brought in Peter.
The high priest asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.
When he had thus spoken, one of the ministers which stood by, smote Jesus on the face saying, "Answerest thou the high priest so?"
And Annas sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.
One of the servants of the high priest, his cousin whose ear Peter smote off, said unto him, "Did not I see thee in the garden with him?"
as Annas the chief priest, and Caiaphas, and John and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest: were gathered together at Jerusalem,
And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,
The high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by, to smite him on the mouth.
And they that stood by said, "Revilest thou God's high priest?"
Then said Paul, "I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest. For it is written, 'Thou shalt not curse the ruler of thy people.'"
After five days, Ananias the high priest descended, with elders and with a certain orator named Tertullus, and informed the ruler of Paul.
Wherefore in all things it became him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be merciful, and a faithful high priest in things concerning God, for to purge the people's sins.
Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the celestial callings, consider the Ambassador and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;
