He striketh them as wicked men in the open sight of others, Because they have turned back from him, and would consider none of his ways; So that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto him, and he heareth the cry of the afflicted.

I know that Jehovah will maintain the cause of the afflicted one, the right of the needy.

All the days of the afflicted are evil; but a cheerful heart is a continual feast.

The Almighty, we cannot find him out: excellent in power, and in judgment, and in abundance of justice, he doth not afflict.

For the Lord will not cast off for ever; but if he have caused grief, he will have compassion according to the multitude of his loving-kindnesses: for he doth not willingly afflict or grieve the children of men. read more.

I rebuke and discipline as many as I love; be zealous therefore and repent.

who has delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver; in whom we confide that he will also yet deliver;

He will deliver thee in six troubles, and in seven there shall no evil touch thee.

Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the destructive pestilence.

For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, my feet from falling.

Even to old age, I am HE, and unto hoary hairs I will carry you: It is I that have made, and I will bear, and I will carry, and will deliver.

And my soul trembleth exceedingly: and thou, Jehovah, till how long?

Lord, how long wilt thou look on? Rescue my soul from their destructions, my only one from the young lions.

How long, O Jehovah? wilt thou be angry for ever? Shall thy jealousy burn like fire?

Jehovah, God of hosts, how long will thine anger smoke against the prayer of thy people?

But they would not hear, and hardened their necks, like to the neck of their fathers, who did not believe in Jehovah their God.

And in the time of his trouble he transgressed yet more against Jehovah, this king Ahaz.

And he did not humble himself before Jehovah, as Manasseh his father had humbled himself; for he, Amon, multiplied trespass.

And thou testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law; but they dealt proudly, and hearkened not unto thy commandments, but sinned against thine ordinances (which if a man do, he shall live in them); and they withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear.

Are they ashamed that they have committed abomination? Nay, they are not at all ashamed, neither know they what it is to blush. Therefore they shall fall among them that fall; at the time that I visit them they shall stumble, saith Jehovah.

For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the coming glory to be revealed to us.

And Jehovah said, I have seen assuredly the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and their cry have I heard on account of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows.

Man, born of woman, is of few days, and full of trouble.

This is my comfort in mine affliction; for thy word hath quickened me.

But he was merciful: he forgave the iniquity, and destroyed them not; but many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his fury:

And he caused them to find compassion of all those that had carried them captives.

And therefore will Jehovah wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he lift himself up, that he may have mercy upon you; for Jehovah is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him. For the people shall dwell in Zion, at Jerusalem. Thou shalt weep no more; he will be very gracious unto thee at the voice of thy cry; as he heareth it, he will answer thee. But as for me, I will look unto Jehovah; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me. I know, Jehovah, that thy Judgments are righteousness, and that in faithfulness thou hast afflicted me.

for whom Jehovah loveth he chasteneth, even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

But being judged, we are disciplined of the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

for whom the Lord loves he chastens, and scourges every son whom he receives. Ye endure for chastening, God conducts himself towards you as towards sons; for who is the son that the father chastens not?

Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of Jehovah to blaspheme, even the child that is born to thee shall certainly die.

If his sons forsake my law, and walk not in mine ordinances; If they profane my statutes, and keep not my commandments: Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.

For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him; I hid me, and was wroth, and he went on backslidingly in the way of his heart.

said, O full of all deceit and all craft: son of the devil, enemy of all righteousness; wilt thou not cease perverting the right paths of the Lord? And now behold, the Lord's hand is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou wilt stretch forth thy hand against the anger of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me.

When I thought to be able to know this, it was a grievous task in mine eyes;

But now he is dead, why should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.

But if he thus say, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let him do to me as seemeth good to him.

Then shall they deliver you up to tribulation, and shall kill you; and ye will be hated of all the nations for my name's sake.

But they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they have not known him that sent me.

persecutions, sufferings: what sufferings happened to me in Antioch, in Iconium, in Lystra; what persecutions I endured; and the Lord delivered me out of all. And all indeed who desire to live piously in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

For though the fig-tree shall not blossom, Neither shall fruit be in the vines; The labour of the olive-tree shall fail, And the fields shall yield no food; The flock shall be cut off from the fold, And there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in Jehovah, I will joy in the God of my salvation.

Rejoice and exult, for your reward is great in the heavens; for thus have they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in the heaven, for after this manner did their fathers act toward the prophets.

For a moment is passed in his anger, a life in his favour; at even weeping cometh for the night, and at morn there is rejoicing.

He will not always chide, neither will he keep his anger for ever.

For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee. In the outpouring of wrath have I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting loving-kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith Jehovah, thy Redeemer.

Thou hast fed them with the bread of tears, and given them tears to drink in large measure:

Nevertheless the darkness shall not be as when the distress was in the land, at the time he at first lightly, and afterwards heavily, visited the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations:

Fear thou not, my servant Jacob, saith Jehovah: for I am with thee; for I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have driven thee, but I will not make a full end of thee; but I will correct thee with judgment, and I will not hold thee altogether guiltless.

If he pass by, and shut up, and call to judgment, who can hinder him?

Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? shall the saw magnify itself against him that wieldeth it? As if the rod should wield them that lift it up; as if the staff should lift up him who is not wood!

forming the light and creating darkness, making peace and creating evil: I, Jehovah, do all these things.

as grieved, but always rejoicing; as poor, but enriching many; as having nothing, and possessing all things.

Now, I rejoice in sufferings for you, and I fill up that which is behind of the tribulations of Christ in my flesh, for his body, which is the assembly;

Even as I have seen, they that plough iniquity and sow mischief, reap the same.

Many are the adversities of the righteous, but Jehovah delivereth him out of them all: He keepeth all his bones; not one of them is broken.

And Samuel told him all the words, and kept nothing back from him. And he said, It is Jehovah: let him do what is good in his sight.

And if thou deal thus with me, slay me, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thine eyes, that I may not behold my wretchedness.

When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee; when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned, neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

Let not your heart be troubled; ye believe on God, believe also on me. In my Father's house there are many abodes; were it not so, I had told you: for I go to prepare you a place;

Thou hast proved my heart, thou hast visited me by night; thou hast tried me, thou hast found nothing: my thought goeth not beyond my word.

And he said to them, What discourses are these which pass between you as ye walk, and are downcast?

And Joshua said, Alas, Lord Jehovah, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over the Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? Oh that we had been content and had remained beyond the Jordan!

And when he would not be persuaded, we were silent, saying, The will of the Lord be done.

For a moment is passed in his anger, a life in his favour; at even weeping cometh for the night, and at morn there is rejoicing.

And going forward a little he fell upon his face, praying and saying, My Father, if it be possible let this cup pass from me; but not as I will, but as thou wilt.

saying, Father, if thou wilt remove this cup from me: but then, not my will, but thine be done.

And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds and for our great trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us such deliverance as this,

He hath not dealt with us according to our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.

And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of Jehovah. And Samuel feared to declare the vision to Eli. And Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And Samuel told him all the words, and kept nothing back from him. And he said, It is Jehovah: let him do what is good in his sight.

And having laid many stripes upon them they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely; who, having received such a charge, cast them into the inner prison, and secured their feet to the stocks. And she went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out. And she called to her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the asses, and I will run to the man of God, and come again. And he said, Why wilt thou go to him to-day? It is neither new moon nor sabbath. And she said, It is well. And it came to pass when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, Behold, there is the Shunammite: run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she said, It is well. And she came to the man of God to the mountain, and caught him by the feet; and Gehazi drew near to thrust her away; but the man of God said, Let her alone, for her soul is troubled within her, and Jehovah has hidden it from me, and has not told me. And she said, Did I desire a son of my lord? did I not say, Do not deceive me? And he said to Gehazi, Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thy hand, and go thy way. If thou meet any man, salute him not, and if any salute thee, answer him not again; and lay my staff upon the face of the lad. And the mother of the lad said, As Jehovah liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee! And he rose up and followed her. And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the lad; but there was neither voice, nor sign of attention. And he returned to meet him, and told him saying, The lad is not awaked. And when Elisha came into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed. And he went in and shut the door upon them both, and prayed to Jehovah. And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands, and bent over him; and the flesh of the child grew warm. And he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and bent over him. And the lad sneezed seven times, and the lad opened his eyes. And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. And he called her; and she came to him. And he said, Take up thy son. And she came and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground; and she took up her son, and went out.

And the sons of Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, took each of them his censer, and put fire in it, and put incense on it, and presented strange fire before Jehovah, which he had not commanded them. And there went out fire from before Jehovah, and devoured them, and they died before Jehovah. And Moses said to Aaron, This is what Jehovah spoke, saying, I will be hallowed in them that come near me, and before all the people I will be glorified. And Aaron was silent.

But now he is dead, why should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.

But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth; I chastened my soul with fasting, and my prayer returned into mine own bosom:
