Yahweh Makes A Covenant With David

1 The king settled into his palace, for the Lord gave him relief from all his enemies on all sides.

1 And it came to pass, when the king sat in his house, and the LORD had given him rest round about from all his enemies;

1 (A)Now it came about when the king lived in his house, and the Lord had given him rest on every side from all his enemies,

1 When the king had settled into his palace(A) and the Lord had given him rest on every side from all his enemies,

1 After the king had settled down in his palace and the LORD had given him respite from all of his surrounding enemies,

2 The king said to Nathan the prophet, "Look! I am living in a palace made from cedar, while the ark of God sits in the middle of a tent."

2 That the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in an house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains.

2 that the king said to (B)Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in (C)a house of cedar, but the ark of God (D)dwells within tent curtains.”

2 the king said to Nathan the prophet, “Look, I am living in a cedar house while the ark of God sits inside tent curtains.”(B)

2 he told the prophet Nathan, "Look now, I'm living in a cedar palace, but the Ark of God resides behind a tent curtain."

3 Nathan replied to the king, "You should go and do whatever you have in mind, for the Lord is with you."

3 And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thine heart; for the LORD is with thee.

3 Nathan said to the king, “(E)Go, do all that is in your mind, for the Lord is with you.”

3 So Nathan told the king, “Go and do all that is on your heart, for the Lord is with you.”

3 Nathan replied to the king, "Go do everything you have in mind, because the LORD is with you."

4 That night the Lord told Nathan,

4 And it came to pass that night, that the word of the LORD came unto Nathan, saying,

4 But in the same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying,

4 But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan:

4 But later that same night, this message came to Nathan from the LORD:

5 "Go, tell my servant David: 'This is what the Lord says: Do you really intend to build a house for me to live in?

5 Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith the LORD, Shalt thou build me an house for me to dwell in?

5 “Go and say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord, “(F)Are you the one who should build Me a house to dwell in?

5 “Go to My servant David and say, ‘This is what the Lord says: Are you to build a house for Me to live in?(C)

5 "Go tell my servant David, "This is what the LORD says:

6 I have not lived in a house from the time I brought the Israelites up from Egypt to the present day. Instead, I was traveling with them and living in a tent.

6 Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle.

6 For (G)I have not dwelt in a house since the day I brought up the sons of Israel from Egypt, even to this day; but I have been moving about (H)in a tent, even in a (a)tabernacle.

6 From the time I brought the Israelites out of Egypt until today I have not lived in a house; instead, I have been moving around with a tent as My dwelling.(D)

6 """Are you going to build a house for me to inhabit? After all, I haven't lived in a house since the day I brought up the Israelis from Egypt until now. Instead, I've moved around in a tent that served as my dwelling place.

7 Wherever I moved among all the Israelites, I did not say to any of the leaders whom I appointed to care for my people Israel, "Why have you not built me a house made from cedar?"'

7 In all the places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people Israel, saying, Why build ye not me an house of cedar?

7 (I)Wherever I have gone with all the sons of Israel, did I speak a word with one of the tribes of Israel, (J)which I commanded to shepherd My people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?’”’

7 In all My journeys with all the Israelites, have I ever asked anyone among the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd My people Israel: Why haven’t you built Me a house of cedar?’

7 Wherever I moved among the Israelis, did I ever ask even one tribal leader of Israel whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, "Why haven't you built me a cedar house?'

8 "So now, say this to my servant David: 'This is what the Lord of hosts says: I took you from the pasture and from your work as a shepherd to make you leader of my people Israel.

8 Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel:

8 “Now therefore, thus you shall say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, “(K)I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, (L)to be ruler over My people Israel.

8 “Now this is what you are to say to My servant David: ‘This is what the Lord of Hosts says: I took you from the pasture and from following the sheep to be ruler over My people Israel.(E)

8 """Now therefore this is what you are to tell my servant David: "This is what the LORD of the Heavenly Armies says: "I took you from the pasture myself from tending sheep to become Commander-in-Chief over my people, that is, over Israel.

9 I was with you wherever you went, and I defeated all your enemies before you. Now I will make you as famous as the great men of the earth.

9 And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth.

9 (M)I have been with you wherever you have gone and (N)have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make you a great name, like the names of the great men who are on the earth.

9 I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before you. I will make a name for you like that of the greatest in the land.(F)

9 """Furthermore, I have remained with you everywhere you have gone, annihilating all your enemies right in front of you. I will make a great reputation for you, like the reputation of great ones who have lived on earth.

10 I will establish a place for my people Israel and settle them there; they will live there and not be disturbed any more. Violent men will not oppress them again, as they did in the beginning

10 Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as beforetime,

10 I will also appoint a place for My people Israel and (O)will plant them, that they may live in their own place and not be disturbed again, (P)nor will the (b)wicked afflict them any more as formerly,

10 I will establish a place for My people Israel and plant them,(G) so that they may live there and not be disturbed again. Evildoers will not afflict them as they have done

10 I will establish a homeland for my people for Israel planting them so they may live in a secure location where they will never be disturbed anymore. Wicked people will no longer afflict them, as happened in the past

11 and during the time when I appointed judges to lead my people Israel. Instead, I will give you relief from all your enemies. The Lord declares to you that he himself will build a dynastic house for you.

11 And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee an house.

11 even (Q)from the day that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel; and (R)I will give you rest from all your enemies. The Lord also declares to you that (S)the Lord will make a house for you.

11 ever since the day I ordered judges to be over My people Israel.(H) I will give you rest from all your enemies.“‘The Lord declares to you: The Lord Himself will make a house for you.

11 when I had commanded judges to administer my people Israel. I'll also grant you relief from all your enemies."'

12 When the time comes for you to die, I will raise up your descendant, one of your own sons, to succeed you, and I will establish his kingdom.

12 And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.

12 (T)When your days are complete and you (U)lie down with your fathers, (V)I will raise up your (c)descendant after you, who will come forth from (d)you, and I will establish his kingdom.

12 When your time comes and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up after you your descendant, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.(I)

12 ""The LORD also announces to you: "The LORD will himself build a house for you. When your life is complete and you go to join your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring after you, who will come forth from your body, and I will fortify his kingdom.

13 He will build a house for my name, and I will make his dynasty permanent.

13 He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.

13 (W)He shall build a house for My name, and (X)I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

13 He will build a house for My name,(J) and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.(K)

13 He will build a Temple dedicated to my Name, and I will make the throne of his kingdom last forever.

14 I will become his father and he will become my son. When he sins, I will correct him with the rod of men and with wounds inflicted by human beings.

14 I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:

14 (Y)I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; (Z)when he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men,

14 I will be a father to him, and he will be a son to Me.(L) When he does wrong, I will discipline him with a human rod and with blows from others.

14 I will be a father to him, and he will be to me a son who, when he commits iniquity, I will discipline with the rod wielded by armies and with wounds inflicted by human beings.

15 But my loyal love will not be removed from him as I removed it from Saul, whom I removed from before you.

15 But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.

15 but My lovingkindness shall not depart from him, (AA)as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you.

15 But My faithful love will never leave him(M) as I removed it from Saul; I removed him from your way.(N)

15 But I'll never remove my gracious love from him as I did from Saul, whom I removed from your presence.

16 Your house and your kingdom will stand before me permanently; your dynasty will be permanent.'"

16 And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.

16 (AB)Your house and your kingdom shall endure before (e)Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.”’”

16 Your house and kingdom will endure before Me(a) forever,(O) and your throne will be established forever.’”(P)

16 Your dynasty and your kingdom will remain forever in my presence your throne will be secure forever."'"

David Responds To Yahweh's Covenant

17 Nathan told David all these words that were revealed to him.

17 According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.

17 In accordance with all these words and all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.

17 Nathan spoke all these words and this entire vision to David.

17 Nathan communicated this complete oracle to David with precisely these words.

David's Prayer Of Thanksgiving

18 King David went in, sat before the Lord, and said, "Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my family, that you should have brought me to this point?

18 Then went king David in, and sat before the LORD, and he said, Who am I, O Lord GOD? and what is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?

18 Then David the king went in and sat before the Lord, and he said, “(AC)Who am I, O Lord (f)God, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far?

18 Then King David went in,(Q) sat in the Lord’s presence, and said,Who am I, Lord God, and what is my house that You have brought me this far?

18 Then King David went in to the presence of the LORD, sat down, and said:

19 And you didn't stop there, O Lord God! You have also spoken about the future of your servant's family. Is this your usual way of dealing with men, O Lord God?

19 And this was yet a small thing in thy sight, O Lord GOD; but thou hast spoken also of thy servant's house for a great while to come. And is this the manner of man, O Lord GOD?

19 And yet this was insignificant in Your eyes, O Lord God, (AD)for You have spoken also of the house of Your servant concerning the distant future. And (AE)this is the (g)custom of man, O Lord God.

19 What You have done so far(b) was a little thing to You, Lord God, for You have also spoken about Your servant’s house in the distant future. And this is a revelation(c) for mankind, Lord God.

19 "Who am I, Lord GOD, and what is my family, that you have brought me to this? And this is still a small thing to you, Lord GOD you also have spoken about the future of your servant's house, and this is the charter for mankind, O Lord GOD!

20 What more can David say to you? You have given your servant special recognition, O Lord God!

20 And what can David say more unto thee? for thou, Lord GOD, knowest thy servant.

20 Again what more can David say to You? For (AF)You know Your servant, O Lord God!

20 What more can David say to You? You know Your servant,(R) Lord God.

20 "What more can David say to you, and you surely know your servant, Lord GOD.

21 For the sake of your promise and according to your purpose you have done this great thing in order to reveal it to your servant.

21 For thy word's sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all these great things, to make thy servant know them.

21 (AG)For the sake of Your word, and according to Your own heart, You have done all this greatness to let Your servant know.

21 Because of Your word and according to Your will, You have revealed all these great things to Your servant.

21 For the sake of your word and consistent with your desire, you have done all of these great things, informing your servant.

22 Therefore you are great, O Lord God, for there is none like you! There is no God besides you! What we have heard is true!

22 Wherefore thou art great, O LORD God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

22 For this reason (AH)You are great, O Lord God; for (AI)there is none like You, and there is no God besides You, (AJ)according to all that we have heard with our ears.

22 This is why You are great,(S) Lord God. There is no one like You, and there is no God besides You,(T) as all we have heard confirms.

22 And therefore you are great, Lord GOD, there is no one like you, there is no God except for you, just as we've heard with our own ears.

23 Who is like your people, Israel, a unique nation on the earth? Their God went to claim a nation for himself and to make a name for himself! You did great and awesome acts for your land, before your people whom you delivered for yourself from the Egyptian empire and its gods.

23 And what one nation in the earth is like thy people, even like Israel, whom God went to redeem for a people to himself, and to make him a name, and to do for you great things and terrible, for thy land, before thy people, which thou redeemedst to thee from Egypt, from the nations and their gods?

23 And (AK)what one nation on the earth is like Your people Israel, whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people and to make a name for Himself, and (AL)to do a great thing for You and awesome things for Your land, before (AM)Your people whom (AN)You have redeemed for Yourself from Egypt, from nations and their gods?

23 And who is like Your people Israel? God came to one nation on earth in order to redeem a people for Himself, to make a name for Himself, and to perform for them(d) great and awesome acts, driving out nations and their gods before Your people You redeemed for Yourself from Egypt.(U)

23 "And who is like your people, like Israel, the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, to make a name for himself, and to carry out for them great and awe-inspiring accomplishments, driving out nations and their gods in front of your people, whom you redeemed to yourself from Egypt?

24 You made Israel your very own people for all time. You, O Lord, became their God.

24 For thou hast confirmed to thyself thy people Israel to be a people unto thee for ever: and thou, LORD, art become their God.

24 For (AO)You have established for Yourself Your people Israel as Your own people forever, and (AP)You, O Lord, have become their God.

24 You established Your people Israel to be Your own people forever, and You, Lord, have become their God.(V)

24 You have prepared your people Israel to be your very own people for ever, and you, LORD, have become their God!

25 So now, O Lord God, make this promise you have made about your servant and his family a permanent reality. Do as you promised,

25 And now, O LORD God, the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant, and concerning his house, establish it for ever, and do as thou hast said.

25 Now therefore, O Lord God, the word that You have spoken concerning Your servant and his house, confirm it forever, and do as You have spoken,

25 Now, Lord God, fulfill the promise forever that You have made to Your servant and his house. Do as You have promised,

25 "And now, LORD God, let what you have spoken concerning your servant and his household be done and let it be done just as you've promised.

26 so you may gain lasting fame, as people say, 'The Lord of hosts is God over Israel!' The dynasty of your servant David will be established before you,

26 And let thy name be magnified for ever, saying, The LORD of hosts is the God over Israel: and let the house of thy servant David be established before thee.

26 (AQ)that Your name may be magnified forever, by saying, ‘The Lord of hosts is God over Israel’; and may the house of Your servant David be established before You.

26 so that Your name will be exalted forever, when it is said, “The Lord of Hosts is God over Israel.” The house of Your servant David(W) will be established before You

26 May your name be made great forever with the result that it is said that the LORD of the Heavenly Armies is God over Israel, and that the household of your servant David may be established before you.

27 for you, O Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, have told your servant, 'I will build you a dynastic house.' That is why your servant has had the courage to pray this prayer to you.

27 For thou, O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, hast revealed to thy servant, saying, I will build thee an house: therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray this prayer unto thee.

27 For You, O Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, have (h)made a revelation to Your servant, saying, ‘(AR)I will build you a house’; therefore Your servant has found (i)courage to pray this prayer to You.

27 since You, Lord of Hosts, God of Israel, have revealed this to Your servant when You said, “I will build a house for you.” Therefore, Your servant has found the courage to pray this prayer to You.

27 For you, LORD of the Heavenly Armies, the God of Israel, have revealed this to your servant, telling him, "I will build a dynasty for you,' so that your servant has found fortitude to pray this prayer to you.

28 Now, O sovereign Lord, you are the true God! May your words prove to be true! You have made this good promise to your servant!

28 And now, O Lord GOD, thou art that God, and thy words be true, and thou hast promised this goodness unto thy servant:

28 Now, O Lord God, You are God, and (AS)Your words are truth, and You have (j)promised this good thing to Your servant.

28 Lord God, You are God; Your words are true, and You have promised this grace to Your servant.

28 "Now therefore, Lord GOD, you are God, and your words are true, and you have spoken to your servant these good things.

29 Now be willing to bless your servant's dynasty so that it may stand permanently before you, for you, O sovereign Lord, have spoken. By your blessing may your servant's dynasty be blessed on into the future!"

29 Therefore now let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee: for thou, O Lord GOD, hast spoken it: and with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever.

29 Now therefore, may it please You to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue forever before You. For You, O Lord God, have spoken; and (AT)with Your blessing may the house of Your servant be blessed forever.”

29 Now, please bless Your servant’s house so that it will continue before You forever. For You, Lord God, have spoken, and with Your blessing Your servant’s house will be blessed forever.(X)

29 So may it please you to bless the household of your servant, so that it might remain forever in your presence, because you, Lord GOD, have spoken, and from your blessing may the household of your servant be blessed forever."
