1 Wo to thee oppressing, and thou not oppressed; and spoiling, and they spoiled not upon thee! when thou finishing to oppress, thou shalt be oppressed; when thou ceasing to spoil, they shall spoil upon thee.
1 Woe (A)to you, O destroyer,While you were not destroyed; And he (B)who is treacherous, while others did not deal treacherously with him.As soon as you finish destroying, (C)you will be destroyed; As soon as you cease to deal treacherously, others will (D)deal treacherously with you.
1 Woe to thee that spoilest, and thou wast not spoiled; and dealest treacherously, and they dealt not treacherously with thee! when thou shalt cease to spoil, thou shalt be spoiled; and when thou shalt make an end to deal treacherously, they shall deal treacherously with thee.
1 "How terrible it will be for you, destroyer, you who have not been destroyed yourself! And how terrible it will be for you, traitor, one whom people have not betrayed! When you have sunk so low in destroying others, you will be destroyed; and when you have finished betraying, they will betray you."
2 O Jehovah, pity us: we hoped for thee: be thou their arm for the mornings, also our salvation in time of straits.
2 O LORD, be gracious unto us; we have waited for thee: be thou their arm every morning, our salvation also in the time of trouble.
2 "LORD, be gracious to us; we long for you; and be our strength every morning, our salvation in times of trouble.
3 From the voice of the multitude peoples fled; from thy lifting up, nations were scattered.
3 At the noise of the tumult the people fled; at the lifting up of thyself the nations were scattered.
3 At the thunder of your voice, the nations flee; at your silence, the nations scatter.
4 And your spoil was gathered the gathering of the locust: as the running about of locusts he ran to and fro upon it
4 Your spoil is gathered as the caterpillar gathers; As locusts rushing about men rush about on it.
4 And your spoil shall be gathered like the gathering of the caterpiller: as the running to and fro of locusts shall he run upon them.
4 Your spoil will be gathered as locusts are gathered;people will swarm over it like an infestation of locusts.
4 Your plunder is gathered as when grasshoppers gather; just like locusts pounce, people have pounced on it.
5 Jehovah was exalted; for he dwells On high: he filled Zion with judgment and justice.
5 The LORD is exalted; for he dwelleth on high: he hath filled Zion with judgment and righteousness.
5 The Lord is exalted, for He dwells on high;He has filled Zion with justice and righteousness.
5 "The LORD is exalted, for he lives on high; he has filled Zion with justice and righteousness.
6 And the stability of thy times, the strength of salvation, was wisdom and knowledge: the fear of Jehovah this his treasure.
6 And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD is his treasure.
6 He will be a sure foundation for your times, abundance and salvation, wisdom and knowledge the fear of the LORD is Zion's treasure."
7 Behold the lions of God they cried out without: the messengers of peace shall weep bitterness.
7 Behold, their valiant ones shall cry without: the ambassadors of peace shall weep bitterly.
7 "Listen! Their brave men cry out in the streets; the envoys of peace weep bitterly.
8 The highways lay waste, the traveler passing by, ceased: he brake the covenant, he despised the cities, he reckoned them not men.
8 The highways lie waste, the wayfaring man ceaseth: he hath broken the covenant, he hath despised the cities, he regardeth no man.
8 The highways are deserted; travelers have quit the road. The enemy has broken treaties; he despises their witnesses, and respects no one.
9 The earth mourning, languished: Lebanon being ashamed, pined away: Sharon was as a sterile region, and Bashan was shaken, and Carmel.
9 The earth mourneth and languisheth: Lebanon is ashamed and hewn down: Sharon is like a wilderness; and Bashan and Carmel shake off their fruits.
9 The land mourns and wastes away; Lebanon feels ashamed and withers. Sharon is like a desert; Bashan and Carmel shake off their leaves."
10 Now will I rise, Jehovah will say; now will I be exalted; now will I be lifted up.
10 Now will I rise, saith the LORD; now will I be exalted; now will I lift up myself.
10 "Now I'll rise up," the LORD has said, "now I'll exalt myself; now I'll be lifted up.
11 Ye shall conceive dry grass, ye shall bring forth straw: your spirit of fire shall consume you.
11 Ye shall conceive chaff, ye shall bring forth stubble: your breath, as fire, shall devour you.
11 You conceive dried grass, you give birth to stubble; your breath is a fire that will consume you.
12 And peoples were the burnings of lime; thorns cut down, in fire shall they be burnt
12 And the people shall be as the burnings of lime: as thorns cut up shall they be burned in the fire.
12 The peoples will be burned to ashes, like thorns cut down and burned in a fire.
12 And the nations will be burned as if to ashes; like cut thorn bushes, they will be set ablaze.
13 Hear, ye afar off, what I did and know, ye drawing near, my strength.
13 Hear, ye that are far off, what I have done; and, ye that are near, acknowledge my might.
13 "Those who are far away have heard what I've done; and those that are near have acknowledged my power.
14 The sinners in Zion trembled; trembling seized the profane. Who to us shall sojourn with devouring fire? who to us with everlasting burning?
14 The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?
14 The sinners in Zion are terrified; trembling grips the godless: "Who among us can live with the consuming fire? Who among us can live with everlasting flames?"
15 He going in justice and speaking uprightness, rejecting in the plunder of oppression; shaking his hands from holding upon a gift, shutting his ear from the hearing of bloods, and binding up his eyes from looking upon evil;
15 He who (AF)walks righteously and speaks with sincerity,He who rejects (l)unjust gainAnd shakes his hands so that they hold no bribe;He who stops his ears from hearing about bloodshedAnd (AG)shuts his eyes from looking upon evil;
15 He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil;
15 The one who lives righteouslyand speaks rightly,(M)who refuses gain from extortion, whose hand never takes a bribe, who stops his ears from listening to murderous plots(b)and shuts his eyes to avoid endorsing evil(c)(N)—
15 The one who walks righteously and has spoken sincere words, who rejects gain from extortion and waves his hand, rejecting bribes, who blocks his ears from hearing plots of murder and shuts his eyes against seeing evil
16 He shall dwell upon heights: the strongholds of rocks his height: his bread was given; his waters sure.
16 He shall dwell on high: his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks: bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure.
16 he will dwell on the heights;his refuge will be the rocky fortresses, his food provided, his water assured.
16 this is the one who will live on the heights; his refuge will be a mountain fortress. His food will be supplied, and his water will be guaranteed.
17 Thine eyes shall perceive the king in his beauty: they shall see the land from far off.
17 Thine eyes shall see the king in his beauty: they shall behold the land that is very far off.
17 "Your eyes will see the king in his elegance, and will view a land that stretches afar.
18 Thy heart shall meditate terror. Where the scribe? where the weigher? where he writing the towers?
18 Thine heart shall meditate terror. Where is the scribe? where is the receiver? where is he that counted the towers?
18 Your mind will ponder at that time of terror: "Where is the king's accountant? Where is the one who weighed the revenue? Where is the officer who supervises the towers?'
19 Thou shalt not see a firm people, a people of a deep lip above, hearing; of a stammering tongue, of no understanding.
19 Thou shalt not see a fierce people, a people of a deeper speech than thou canst perceive; of a stammering tongue, that thou canst not understand.
19 No longer will you see those arrogant people, those people with their obscure speech you cannot comprehend, stammering in a language you cannot understand.
20 Behold Zion the city of our appointment: thine eyes shall see Jerusalem a quiet dwelling, the tent shall not remove; its pegs shall not be pulled up forever, and none of its cords shall be broken.
20 (AO)Look upon Zion, the city of our appointed feasts;Your eyes will see Jerusalem, an (AP)undisturbed habitation,(AQ)A tent which will not be folded; Its stakes will never be pulled up,Nor any of its cords be torn apart.
20 Look upon Zion, the city of our solemnities: thine eyes shall see Jerusalem a quiet habitation, a tabernacle that shall not be taken down; not one of the stakes thereof shall ever be removed, neither shall any of the cords thereof be broken.
20 Look at Zion, the city of our festival times.Your eyes will see Jerusalem,a peaceful pasture,(R) a tent that does not wander;its tent pegs will not be pulled upnor will any of its cords be loosened.(S)
20 "Look at Zion, city of our festivals! Your eyes will see Jerusalem, an undisturbed abode, an immovable tent; its stakes will never be pulled up, nor will any of its ropes be broken.
21 But there the mighty Jehovah to us a place of rivers, rivers broad of hands; a ship with the oar shall not go in it, and a mighty ship shall not pass over it.
21 But there the glorious LORD will be unto us a place of broad rivers and streams; wherein shall go no galley with oars, neither shall gallant ship pass thereby.
21 But there the LORD in majesty will be for us our source of broad rivers and streams, where no galley with oars can go, where no stately ship can sail.
22 For Jehovah is our Judge, Jehovah our law-giver, Jehovah our king; he will save us.
22 For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he will save us.
22 For the LORD is our judge, and the LORD is our lawgiver; and the LORD is our king, and it is he who will save us.
23 Thy cords were broken in pieces; they will not well strengthen their mast; they spread not the flag: then was the prey of a great spoil divided; the lame plundered the plunder.
23 Thy tacklings are loosed; they could not well strengthen their mast, they could not spread the sail: then is the prey of a great spoil divided; the lame take the prey.
23 Your ropes are slack;they cannot hold the base of the mastor spread out the flag. Then abundant spoil will be divided, the lame will plunder it,
23 "Your rigging hangs loose; it cannot reliably hold the mast in its place, and the sail cannot spread out. Then an abundance of spoils will be divided even the lame will carry off plunder.
24 And the inhabitant shall not say, I was sick: to the people dwelling in it, iniquity was lifted up.
24 And the inhabitant shall not say, I am sick: the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquity.
24 And no one living there will say, "I am ill.' The people living there will have their sins forgiven."
