One day the donkeys of Sauls father Kish wandered off. Kish said to his son Saul, “Take one of the attendants with you and go look for the donkeys.”

David marched out with the army and was successful in everything Saul sent him to do. Saul put him in command of the soldiers, which pleased all the people and Sauls servants as well.

Now Sauls daughter Michal loved David, and when it was reported to Saul, it pleased him.

Every time the Philistine commanders came out to fight, David was more successful than all of Sauls officers. So his name became well known.

Saul ordered his son Jonathan and all his servants to kill David. But Sauls son Jonathan liked David very much,

he sent agents to seize David. However, when they saw the group of prophets prophesying with Samuel leading them, the Spirit of God came on Sauls agents, and they also started prophesying.

One of Sauls servants, detained before the Lord, was there that day. His name was Doeg the Edomite, chief of Sauls shepherds.

David fled that day from Sauls presence and went to King Achish of Gath.

Then Doeg the Edomite, who was in charge of Sauls servants, answered: “I saw Jesse’s son come to Ahimelech son of Ahitub at Nob.

Afterward, David’s conscience bothered him because he had cut off the corner of Sauls robe.

So David took the spear and the water jug by Sauls head, and they went their way. No one saw them, no one knew, and no one woke up; they all remained asleep because a deep sleep from the Lord came over them.

They cut off Sauls head, stripped off his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to spread the good news in the temples of their idols and among the people.

On the third day a man with torn clothes and dust on his head came from Sauls camp. When he came to David, he fell to the ground and paid homage.

Jonathan’s bow never retreated,

Abner son of Ner, commander of Sauls army, took Sauls son Ish-bosheth and moved him to Mahanaim.

Sauls son Ish-bosheth was 40 years old when he began his reign over Israel; he ruled for two years. The house of Judah, however, followed David.

David replied, “Good, I will make a covenant with you. However, there’s one thing I require of you: Do not appear before me unless you bring Sauls daughter Michal here when you come to see me.”

When Sauls son Ish-bosheth heard that Abner had died in Hebron, his courage failed, and all Israel was dismayed.

As the ark of the Lord was entering the city of David, Sauls daughter Michal looked down from the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, and she despised him in her heart.

When David returned home to bless his household, Sauls daughter Michal came out to meet him. “How the king of Israel honored himself today!” she said. “He exposed himself today in the sight of the slave girls of his subjects like a vulgar person would expose himself.”

And Sauls daughter Michal had no child to the day of her death.

David asked, “Is there anyone remaining from Sauls family I can show kindness to because of Jonathan?”

There was a servant of Sauls family named Ziba. They summoned him to David, and the king said to him, “Are you Ziba?”

“I am your servant,” he replied.

So the king asked, “Is there anyone left of Sauls family that I can show the kindness of God to?”

Ziba said to the king, “There is still Jonathan’s son who was injured in both feet.”

“Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “since I intend to show you kindness because of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all your grandfather Sauls fields, and you will always eat meals at my table.”

Then the king summoned Sauls attendant Ziba and said to him, “I have given to your master’s grandson all that belonged to Saul and his family.

Mephibosheth, Sauls grandson, also went down to meet the king. He had not taken care of his feet, trimmed his mustache, or washed his clothes from the day the king left until the day he returned safely.

David spared Mephibosheth, the son of Sauls son Jonathan, because of the oath of the Lord that was between David and Jonathan, Sauls son.

When it was reported to David what Sauls concubine Rizpah, daughter of Aiah, had done,

David had the bones brought from there. They gathered up the bones of Sauls family who had been hung

and buried the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan at Zela in the land of Benjamin in the tomb of Sauls father Kish. They did everything the king commanded. After this, God answered prayer for the land.

During Sauls reign they waged war against the Hagrites, who were defeated by their power. And they lived in their tents throughout the region east of Gilead.

The Philistines pursued Saul and his sons and killed Sauls sons Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua.

They were archers who could use either the right or left hand, both to sling stones and shoot arrows from a bow. They were Sauls relatives from Benjamin:
