the five-fold volume, consisting of the first five books of the Old Testament. This word does not occur in Scripture, nor is it certainly known when the roll was thus divided into five portions Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy. Probably that was done by the LXX. translators. Some modern critics speak of a Hexateuch, introducing the Book of Joshua as one of the group. But this book is of an entirely different character from the other books, and has a different author. It stands by itself as the first of a series of historical books beginning with the entrance of the Israelites into Canaan. (See Joshua.)
The books composing the Pentateuch are properly but one book, the "Law of Moses," the "Book of the Law of Moses," the "Book of Moses," or, as the Jews designate it, the "Torah" or "Law." That in its present form it "proceeds from a single author is proved by its plan and aim, according to which its whole contents refer to the covenant concluded between Jehovah and his people, by the instrumentality of Moses, in such a way that everything before his time is perceived to be preparatory to this fact, and all the rest to be the development of it. Nevertheless, this unity has not been stamped upon it as a matter of necessity by the latest redactor: it has been there from the beginning, and is visible in the first plan and in the whole execution of the work.", Keil, Einl. i.d. A certain school of critics have set themselves to reconstruct the books of the Old Testament. By a process of "scientific study" they have discovered that the so-called historical books of the Old Testament are not history at all, but a miscellaneous collection of stories, the inventions of many different writers, patched together by a variety of editors! As regards the Pentateuch, they are not ashamed to attribute fraud, and even conspiracy, to its authors, who sought to find acceptance to their work which was composed partly in the age of Josiah, and partly in that of Ezra and Nehemiah, by giving it out to be the work of Moses! This is not the place to enter into the details of this controversy. We may say frankly, however, that we have no faith in this "higher criticism." It degrades the books of the Old Testament below the level of fallible human writings, and the arguments on which its speculations are built are altogether untenable.
The evidences in favour of the Mosaic authorship of the Pentateuch are conclusive. We may thus state some of them briefly:
(1.) These books profess to have been written by Moses in the name of God (7/14/type/emb'>Ex 17:14; 24:3-4,7; 32:7-10,30-34; 34:27; Le 26:46; 27:34; De 31:9,24-25).
(2.) This also is the uniform and persistent testimony of the Jews of all sects in all ages and countries (comp. Jos 8:31-32; 1Ki 2:3; Jer 7:22; Ezr 6:18; Ne 8:1; Mal 4:4; Mt 22:24; Ac 15:21).
(3.) Our Lord plainly taught the Mosaic authorship of these books (Mt 5:17-18; 19:8; 22:31-32; 23:2; Mr 10:9; 12:26; Lu 16:31; 20:37; 24:26-27,44; Joh 3:14; 5:45-46,47; 6:32,49; 7:19,22). In the face of this fact, will any one venture to allege either that Christ was ignorant of the composition of the Bible, or that, knowing the true state of the case, he yet encouraged the people in the delusion they clung to?
(4.) From the time of Joshua down to the time of Ezra there is, in the intermediate historical books, a constant reference to the Pentateuch as the "Book of the Law of Moses." This is a point of much importance, inasmuch as the critics deny that there is any such reference; and hence they deny the historical character of the Pentateuch. As regards the Passover, e.g., we find it frequently spoken of or alluded to in the historical books following the Pentateuch, showing that the "Law of Moses" was then certainly known. It was celebrated in the time of Joshua (Jos 5:10, cf. Jos 4:19), Hezekiah (2Ch 30), Josiah (2Ki 23; 2Ch 35), and Zerubbabel (Ezr 6:19-22), and is referred to in such passages as 2Ki 23:22; 2Ch 35:18; 1Ki 9:25 ("three times in a year"); 2Ch 8:13. Similarly we might show frequent references to the Feast of Tabernacles and other Jewish institutions, although we do not admit that any valid argument can be drawn from the silence of Scripture in such a case. An examination of the following texts, 1Ki 2:9; 2Ki 14:6; 2Ch 23:18; 25:4; 34:14; Ezr 3:2; 7:6; Da 9:11,13, will also plainly show that the "Law of Moses" was known during all these centuries.
Granting that in the time of Moses there existed certain oral traditions or written records and documents which he was divinely led to make use of in his history, and that his writing was revised by inspired successors, this will fully account for certain peculiarities of expression which critics have called "anachronisms" and "contradictions," but in no way militates against the doctrine that Moses was the original author of the whole of the Pentateuch. It is not necessary for us to affirm that the whole is an original composition; but we affirm that the evidences clearly demonstrate that Moses was the author of those books which have come down to us bearing his name. The Pentateuch is certainly the basis and necessary preliminary of the whole of the Old Testament history and literature. (See Deuteronomy.)

A term meaning "five volumes" (teuchos in Alexandrian Greek "a book"); applied to the first five books of the Bible, in Tertullian and Origen. "The book of the law" in De 34:12; 29:21; 30:10; 31:26; "the book of the law of Moses," Jos 23:6; Ne 8:1; in Ezr 7:6, "the law of Moses," "the book of Moses" (Ezr 6:18). The Jews now call it Torah "the law," literally, the directory in Lu 24:27 "Moses" stands for his book.
The division into five books is probably due to the Septuagint, for the names of the five books, Genesis, Exodus, etc., are Greek not Hebrew. The Jews name each book from its first word; the Pentateuch forms one roll, divided, not into books, but into larger and smaller sections Parshiyoth and Sedorim. They divide its precepts into 248 positive, and 365 negative, 248 being the number of parts the rabbis assign the body, 365 the days of the year. As a mnemonic they carry a square cloth with fringes (tsitsit = 600 in Hebrew) consisting of eight threads and five knots, 613 in all. The five of the Pentateuch answer to the five books of the psalter, and the five megilloth of the hagiographa (Song, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, and Esther).
MOSES' AUTHORSHIP. After the battle with Amalek (Ex 17:14) "Jehovah said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in the Book," implying there was a regular account kept in a well known book. Also Ex 24:4, "Moses wrote all the words of Jehovah"; (Ex 34:27) "Jehovah said unto Moses, Write thou these words" distinguished from Ex 34:28, "He (Jehovah) wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments" (Ex 34:1). Nu 33:2 "Moses wrote their goings out according to their journeys by the commandment of Jehovah." In De 17:18-19, the king is required to "write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests, the Levites"; and De 31:9-11, "Moses wrote this law and delivered it unto the priests, the son of Levi," who should "at the end of every seven years read this law before all Israel in their hearing"; and De 31:24," Moses made an end of writing the words of this law in a book," namely, the whole Pentateuch ("the law," Mt 22:40; Ga 4:21), "and commanded the Levites ... put it in the side of the ark that it may be a witness against thee," as it proved under Josiah.
The two tables of the Decalogue were IN the ark (1Ki 8:9); the book of the law, the Pentateuch, was laid up in the holy of holies, close by the ark, probably in a chest (2Ki 22:8,18-19). The book of the law thus written by Moses and handed to the priests ends at De 31:23; the rest of the book of Deuteronomy is an appendix added after Moses' death by another hand, excepting the song and blessing, Moses' own composition. Moses speaks of "this law" and "the book of this law" as some definite volume which he had written for his people (De 28:61; 29:19-20,29). He uses the third person of himself, as John does in the New Testament He probably dictated much of it to Joshua or some scribe, who subsequently added the account of Moses' death and a few explanatory insertions. The recension by Ezra (and the great synagogue, Buxtori "Tiberius," 1:10, Tertullian De Cultu Fem. 3, Jerome ad Helvid.) may have introduced the further explanations which appear post Mosaic.
Moses probably uses patriarchal documents, as e.g. genealogies for Genesis; these came down through Shem and Abraham to Joseph and Israel in Egypt. That writing existed ages before Moses is proved by the tomb of Chnumhotep at Benihassan, of the twelfth dynasty, representing a scribe presenting to the governor a roll of papyrus covered with inscriptions dated the sixth year of Osirtasin II long before the Exodus. The papyrus found by M. Prisse in the hieratic character is considered the oldest of existing manuscripts and is attributed to a prince of the fifth dynasty; weighed down with age, he invokes Osiris to enable him to give mankind the fruits of his long experience. It contains two treatises, the first, of 12 pages, the end of a work of which the former part is lost, the second by a prince, son of the king next before Assa, in whose reign the work was composed. The Greek alphabet borrows its names of letters and order from the Semitic; those names have a meaning in Semitic, none in Greek Tradition made Cadmus ("the Eastern") introduce them into Greece from Phoenicia (Herodot. 5:58).
Joshua took a Hittite city, Kirjath Sepher, "the city of the book" (Jos 15:15), and changed the name to Debir of kindred meaning. Pertaour, a scribe under Rameses the Great, in an Iliadlike poem engraved on the walls of Karnak mentions Chirapsar, of the Khota or Hittites, a writer of books. From the terms for "write," "book," "ink," being in all Semitic dialects, it follows they must have been known to the earliest Shemites before they branched off into various tribes and nations. Moses, Israel's wise leader, would therefore be sure to commit to writing their laws, their wonderful antecedents and ancestry, and the Divine promises from the beginning connected with them, and their fulfillment in Egypt, in the Exodus, and in the wilderness, in order to evoke their national spirit. Israel would certainly have a written history at a time when the Hittites among whom Israel settled were writers.
Moreover, from Joshua downward the Old Testament books abound in references to the laws, history, and words of Moses, as such, universally accepted. They are ordered to be read continually (Jos 1:7-8); "all the law which Moses My servant commanded ... this book of the law" (Jos 8:31,34; 23:6). In Jos 1:3-8,13-18 the words of De 11:24-25; 31:6-12, and De 3:18-20 Nu 32:20-28, are quoted. Israel's constitution in church and state accords with that established by Moses. The priesthood is in Aaron's family (Jos 14:1). "Eleazar," Aaron's son, succeeds to his father's exalted position and with Joshua divides the land (Jos 21:1), as Nu 34:17 ordained; the Levites discharge their duties, scattered among the tribes and having 48 cities, as Jehovah by Moses commanded (Nu 35:7). So the tabernacle made by Moses is set up at Shiloh (Jos 18:1). The sacrifices (Jos 8:31; 22:23,27,29) are those enjoined (Leviticus 1; 2; 3).
The altar built (Jos 8:30-31; Ex 20:25) is "as Moses commanded ... in the book of the law of Moses." Compare also as to the ark, Jos 3:3,6,8; 7:6; circumcision, Jos 5:2; Passover, Jos 5:10; with the Pentateuch. There is the same general assembly or congregation and princes (9/18/type/emb'>Jos 9:18-21; 20:6,9; 22:30; Ex 16:22); the same elders of Israel (Jos 7:6; De 31:9); elders of the city (De 25:8; Jos 20:4); judges and officers (Jos 8:33; De 16:18); heads of thousands (Jos 22:21; Nu 1:16). Bodies taken down from hanging (Jos 8:29; 10:27; De 21:23). No league with Canaan (Joshua 9; Ex 23:32). Cities of refuge (Joshua 20; Nu 35:11-15; De 4:41-43; 19:2-7). Inheritance to Zelophebad's daughters (Jos 17:3; Numbers 27; 36).
So in Judges Moses' laws are referred to (Jg 2:1-3,11-12,20; 6/8/type/emb'>6:8-10; 20:2,6,13; De 13:6,12-14; 22:21). The same law and worship appear in Judges as in Pentateuch. Judah takes the lead (Jg 1:2; 20:18; Ge 49:8; Nu 2:3; 10:14). The judge's office is as Moses defined it (De 17:9). Gideon recognizes the theocracy, as Moses ordained (Jg 8:22-23; Ex 19:5-6; De 17:14,20; 33:5). The tabernacle is at Shiloh (Jg 18:31); Israel goes up to the house of God and consults the high priest with Urim and Thummim (Jg 20:23,26-28; Ex 28:30; Nu 27:21; De 12:5). The ephod is the priest's garment (Jg 8:27; 17:5; 18:14-17).
The Levites scattered through Israel are the recognized ministers (Jg 17:7-13; 19:1-2). Circumcision is Israel's distinguishing badge (Jg 14:3; 15:18). Historical rereferences to the Pentateuch abound (Jg 1:16,20,23; 2:1,10; 6:13), especially Jg 11:15-27 epitomizes Numbers 20; 21; De 2:1-8,26-34; compare the language Jg 2 with Ex 34:13; Leviticus 26; Deuteronomy 28; De 7:2,8; 12:3; Jg 5:4-5 with De 33:2; 32:16-17. In the two books of Samuel the law and Pentateuch are the basis. Eli, high priest, is sprung from Aaron through Ithamar (1Ch 24:3; 2Sa 8:17; 1Ki 2:27). And, these, are the sons of Zibeon: Both Aiah and Anah, - The same, is the Anah that found the warm springs in the desert, as he fed the asses of Zibeon his father.
And his lord saw, that, Yahweh, was with him - and that whatsoever, he was doing, Yahweh, was causing to prosper in his hand.
After nothing, was the chief of the prison looking, of whatever was in his hand, - in that Yahweh, was with him, and whatsoever, he was doing, Yahweh, was causing to prosper.
And they said each man unto his brother - Verily guilty, we are, respecting our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul when he appealed unto us for favour and we hearkened not, - therefore, hath come in unto us this distress.
And Israel said unto Joseph, To see thine own face, had I not thought, - and lo! God hath caused me to see even thy seed!
Boiling over like water, thou mayest not have pre-eminence, Because thou didst mount the bed of thy father, - Then, wast thou profane - My marriage-bed, he mounted!
Into their circle, do not thou enter my soul! In their convocation, do not thou join mine honour! For in their anger, they slew brave men, And in their wantonness, they hamstrung oxen.
Judah, as for thee, thy brethren shall praise thee when thy hand is on the neck of thy foes, - The sons of thy father, shall bow them-selves down to thee:
and embittered their lives with harsh service, in clay and in bricks, and in all manner of service in the field, - all their service, wherein they rigorously made them serve.
And when she could no longer hide him, she took for him an ark of paper-reed, and covered it over with bitumen, and with pitch, - and put therein the child, and laid it among the rushes upon the bank of the river.
And he said - I, am the God of thy father, God of Abraham, God of Isaac and God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God.
Ye shall no more give straw unto the people, for making the bricks as heretofore: Let them, go, themselves, so shall they gather for themselves straw: Nevertheless, the fixed number of bricks, which they have been making heretofore, shall ye lay upon them, ye shall not diminish therefrom, - for idle, they are, on this account, it is that they are making an outcry, saying, We must go our way, we must sacrifice to our God.
Now, therefore, go labour, but, straw, shall not be given you, - yet the tale of bricks, shall ye render.
And so it shall come to pass when ye shall enter into the land which Yahweh will give you as he hath spoken, - and ye shall observe this service; and it shall come to pass that your sons shall say unto you, - What is this your service? read more. Then shall ye say - A passover sacrifice, it is to Yahweh, who passed-over the houses of the sons of Israel, in Egypt, when he plagued the Egyptians but our houses, he delivered. Then did the people bend their heads and bow themselves down.
And Yahweh spake unto Moses, saying: Hallow to me every firstborn, that which any female first beareth among the sons of Israel, among men and among beasts, - mine! it is. read more. And Moses said unto the people - Ye are to remember this day, on which ye came forth out of Egypt out of the house of slaves, that with strength of hand, did Yahweh bring you forth from hence, - there shall not, therefore be eaten anything leavened. To-day, are, ye, coming forth, - in the month Abib. And it shall be, when Yahweh shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Amorite, and the Hivite and the Jebusite, which he sware to thy fathers to give thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, then shalt thou serve with this service, in this month.
Now, Yahweh, was going before them - by day, in a pillar of cloud to lead them the way, and by night, in a pillar of fire to give them light, - that they might journey day and night:
Who is, like unto thee, Majestic in holiness, - To be revered in praises, Doing a marvellous thing?
And it came to pass on the sixth day, that they gathered food twice as much, two omers for each one, - so all the princes of the assembly came in, and told Moses.
And Moses said unto Joshua - Choose for us men, and go forth, fight with Amalek, - to-morrow, am, I, stationing myself upon the top of the hill, with the staff of God in my hand.
Then said Yahweh unto Moses - Write this as a remembrancer in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Jeshua - that I will, wipe out, the remembrance of Amalek, from under the heavens.
So Jethro, Moses father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses wife, - after she had been sent home;
Thou wilt get quite worn out, both thou and this people that is with thee, - for the thing is too heavy for thee, thou canst not do it, alone.
Now, therefore, if ye will, indeed hearken, to my voice, And keep my covenant, Then shall ye be mine as a treasure beyond all the peoples, For, mine, is all the earth;

but shewing lovingkindness unto thousands of generations , - of them who love me, and keep my commandments.
But if, an altar of stones, thou wilt make to me, thou shalt not build them hewn, - for as soon as thou hast lifted, thy sharp tool, thereupon, thou hast profaned it;
If, silver, thou wilt lend unto my people - unto the humbled one by thee, thou shalt not be to him like one that lendeth on interest, - thou shalt not lay upon him interest.
Thy fulness and thine outflow, shalt thou not delay, - the firstborn of thy sons, shalt thou give to me.
And, a bribe, shalt thou not take, - for the bribe, blindeth the clear-sighted, and perverteth the words of the righteous.
And, in all that I have said unto thee, shalt thou take heed to thyself, - and the name of other gods, shalt thou not mention, it shall not be heard upon thy mouth.
Lo! I, am sending a messenger before thee, to guard thee in the way, - and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. Take thou heed of his presence, and hearken to his voice - do not vex him,-for he will not pardon your transgression, for, my name, is within him. read more. Then wrote Moses all the words of Yahweh, and rose up early in the morning, and builded an altar, under the mountain, and twelve pillars, for the twelve tribes of Israel: and he sent young men of the sons of Israel, and they caused to go up, ascending-sacrifices, - and slew peace-offerings to Yahweh, of oxen.
And thou shalt make fifty clasps of gold, - so shalt thou join the curtains one to another, with the clasps, and thus shall the habitation be one.
And thou shalt make its horns upon its four corners, of the same, shall be its horns, - and thou shalt overlay it with copper.
Thou thyself, therefore, shalt command the sons of Israel that they bring unto thee - pure, beaten olive-oil, for giving light, - that the lamp may lift up its flame continually. In the tent of meeting, outside the veil which is by the testimony, shall Aaron and his sons order it from evening until morning, before Yahweh, - a statute age-abiding, to their generations, from the sons of Israel.
Thus shalt thou place, in the breastpiece for giving sentence, the lights and the perfections, so shall they be upon the heart of Aaron when he goeth in before Yahweh, - so shall Aaron bear the sentence of the sons of Israel, upon his heart before Yahweh continually.
And thou shalt weave, in checker work the tunic of fine linen, and shalt make a turban of fine linen, - and, a girdle, shalt thou make the work of an embroiderer. And, for the sons of Aaron, shalt thou make tunics, and shalt make for them girdles, - and caps, shalt thou make for them, for glory and for beauty. read more. And thou shalt clothe therewith Aaron thy brother, and his sons, with him, - and shalt anoint them and install them, and hallow them, so shall they minister as priests unto me. And thou shalt make for them breeches of linen, to cover their unseemliness, from the loins even unto the thighs, shall they be;
This, moreover, is what thou shalt offer upon the altar, two lambs of a year old day by day, continually:
But Aaron shall put a propitiatory-covering upon the horns thereof, once in the year: of the blood of the sin-bearer for propitiatory-coverings, once in the year, shall he put a propitiatory-covering thereupon to your generations, most holy, it is to Yahweh.
So shall Aaron and his sons bathe thereat, - their hands, and their feet. When they enter the tent of meeting, they shall bathe with water so shall they not die, - or when they approach unto the altar to minister, to burn as incense an altar-flame to Yahweh:
And thou shalt make it an oil for holy anointing, a compounded perfume the work of a perfumer, - an oil for holy anointing, shall it be.
Aaron also, and his sons, shalt thou anoint, - so shalt thou hallow them to minister as priests unto me.
Thou thyself, therefore, speak unto the sons of Israel, saying, Surely, my sabbaths, shall ye keep, for, a sign it is betwixt me and you to your generations, that ye may know that I Yahweh do hallow you.
So the sons of Levi did, according to the word of Moses, - and there fell from among the people on that day, about three thousand men.
And Yahweh said unto Moses - Hew thee two tables of stone, like the first, - and I will write upon the tables the words which were upon the first tables which thou didst break in pieces;
So Yahweh passed before him, and proclaimed, - Yahweh, Yahweh, A God of compassion and favour, - Slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness and faithfulness:
Take thou heed what, I, am commanding thee this day, - behold me! driving out from before thee - the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite.
For their altars, shall ye smash, And their pillars, shall ye shiver, - And their sacred-stems, shall ye fell.
For I will root out nations from before thee, and will enlarge thy borders, - and no man shall covet thy land, when thou goes up to see the face of Yahweh thy God, three times in the year.
And Yahweh said unto Moses, Write for thyself these words, for according to the tenor of these words, have I solemnized with thee, a covenant, and with Israel. So then he was there, with Yahweh, forty days and forty nights, bread, did he not eat and, water, did he not drink, and he wrote upon the tables, the words of the covenant, the ten words.
And he made the laver of bronze, and the stand thereof of bronze, - with the mirrors of the female hosts who did service at the opening of the tent of meeting.
And thou shalt bring near Aaron and his sons, unto the opening of the teat of meeting, - and shalt bathe them in the water; and thou shalt clothe Aaron with the holy garments, - and shalt anoint him and hallow him so shall he minister as priest unto me. read more. His sons also, shalt thou bring near, - and shalt clothe them with tunics; and shalt anoint them as thou didst anoint their father, and they shall minister as priests unto me, - so shall their anointing remain to them for an age-abiding priesthood, to their generations.
and he shall cleave it in its wings - he shall not divide it asunder, so shall the priest make a perfume therewith, at the altar, upon the wood that is on the fire, - an ascending-sacrifice, it is, an altar-flame of a satisfying odour, unto Yahweh.
None of the meal-offerings which ye bring near unto Yahweh shall be made into anything leavened, - for, of no leaven and Of no syrup, may ye make a perfume, as an altar-flame unto Yahweh.
Then shall the priest put of the blood upon the horns of the altar of fragrant incense before Yahweh, which is in the tent of meeting, - and, all the remainder of the blood of the bullock, shall he pour out at the base of the altar of ascending-sacrifice, which is at the entrance of the tent of meeting,
but, his guilt-bearer, itself, shall he bring in unto Yahweh, - a ram without defect out of the flock by thine estimate as a guilt-bearer, unto the priest. So shall the priest put a propitiatory-covering over him before Yahweh, and it shall be forgiven him, - on account of any one thing, of all which one might do, so as to become guilty therein.
And as for any meal-offering that may be baked in an oven, or anything that hath been prepared in a boiler or on a girdle, to the priest that bringeth it near - to him, shall it belong,
If, for thanksgiving, he bring it near, then shall he bring near, with the thanksgiving sacrifice perforated cakes unleavened, overflowed with oil, and wafers unleavened anointed with oil, - and of fine flour moistened, perforated cakes overflowed with oil. With perforated cakes of leavened bread, shall he bring near his oblation, with his peace-offering of thanksgiving,
That ye may make a difference, between the sacred and the common, - and between the unclean and the clean;
All the days that the plague is in him, shall he continue unclean, Unclean, he is, - Alone, shall he remain, Outside the camp, shall be his dwelling.
When ye enter into the land of Canaan which I am about to give you for a possession, - and I put a plague-mark of leprosy in a house, of the land of your possession,
and, whosoever toucheth any thing whereon she sitteth shall wash his clothes, and bathe in water, and be unclean until the evening;
And Yahweh said unto Moses - Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he do not come at all times into the holy place, within the veil, - into the presence of the propitiatory, which is upon the ark, so shall he not die, for, in the cloud, will I appear upon the propitiatory.
After the doings of the land of Egypt wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do, - And after the doings of the land of Canaan whither, I, am bringing you in, shall ye not do, And, in their statutes, shall ye not walk:
Do not make yourselves unclean in any of these things, - For in all these things, have the nations made themselves unclean, whom, I, am sending out from before you. Therefore hath the land become unclean, and I have visited the iniquity thereof upon it, - and the land hath vomited her inhabitants. read more. Ye, therefore, shall observe my statutes and my regulations, and have nothing to do with any of these abominations, - whether the home-born, or the sojourner that sojourneth in your midst; For all these abominations, have the men of the land done, who were before you; And so the land hath become unclean: So shall the land not vomit you, through your making it unclean, - as it vomited the nation which was before you.
Thou shalt not go about talebearing, among thy people Thou shalt not stand by, over the blood of thy neighbour: I, am Yahweh.
And when ye come into the land, and plant any manner of fruit-tree, then shall ye count as uncircumcised the fruit thereof, three years, shall it be to you as if unclean, it shall not be eaten.
Ye shall not act perversely in giving judgment, - in measures of extent, in weights in measures of capacity: Just balances, just weights, a just ephah and a just hin, shall ye have, - I - Yahweh, am your God, who brought you forth out of the land of Egypt.
Therefore shall ye observe all my statutes and all my regulations, and do them, - So shall the land whereinto I am bringing you to dwell therein, not vomit you forth;
Therefore shall ye make a distinction - Between the clean beasts, and the unclean, - And between the unclean birds and the clean, - So shall ye not make your persons abominable with beast, or with bird or with anything which creepeth upon the ground, which I have distinguished for you, as unclean.
Speak unto Aaron, and unto his sons, That they hold sacredly aloof from the holy things of the sons of Israel, so as not to profane my holy name, - in the things which they are hallowing unto me - I, am Yahweh.
Speak unto Aaron, and unto his sons, and unto all the sons of Israel, and thou shalt say unto them - What man, soever, of the house of Israel, or of the sojourners in Israel, may bring near his oblation, as regardeth any of their vows, or any of their freewill offerings which they may bring near unto Yahweh, as an ascending-sacrifice, that ye may be accepted, it must be a male without defect, of the beeves, or of the sheep, or of the goats: read more. whatsoever hath in it a blemish, shall ye not bring near, - for it shall not he accepted for you. And, whosoever would bring near a peace-offering unto Yahweh, to consecrate a vow or as a freewill-offering with a bullock or a sheep, without defect, shall it be, to be accepted, no, blemish, shall be therein.
Speak unto the sons of Israel, and thou shalt say unto them: - When ye enter into the land which, I, am giving you, and ye reap the harvest thereof, then shall ye bring in a sheaf of the first-ripe corn of your harvest, unto the priest;
Command the sons of Israel, That they bring unto thee - pure oil olive, beaten, for giving light, - to cause the lamp to burn up continually. Outside the veil of the testimony, in the tent of meeting, shall Aaron order it, from evening until morning, before Yahweh continually, - a statute age-abiding, to your generations.
And Yahweh spake unto Moses in Mount Sinai, saying - Speak unto the sons of Israel, and thou shalt say unto them: - When ye enter into the land which, I, am giving you, then shall the land keep a sabbath unto Yahweh.
Therefore will I command my blessing upon you, in the sixth year, - and it shall make the increase of three years;

These are the statutes and the regulations and the laws, which Yahweh granted between himself, and the sons of Israel, - in Mount Sinai by the mediation of Moses.
These are the commandments which Yahweh commanded Moses for the sons of Israel, - in Mount Sinai.
These, are they who had been summoned by the assembly, being princes of the tribes of their fathers, - heads of the thousands of Israeli.
And they who encamp eastwards towards sunrise, shall he the standard of the camp of Judah by their hosts, - even the prince of the sons of Judah, Nashon, son of Ammi-nadab;
Speak unto the sons of Israel, and thou shalt say unto them, - When any man or woman, would make the special vow of One Separate, by separating himself unto Yahweh, from wine and strong drink, shall he separate himself, neither vinegar of wine nor vinegar of strong drink, shall he drink, - and no liquor of grapes, shall he drink, no grapes fresh or dried, shall he eat. read more. All the days of his separation, of nothing that is made from the grapevine from the seeds even to the skin, shall he eat. All the days of his vow of separation, no razor, shall pass over his head, - until the days are fulfilled for which he shall separate himself to Yahweh hallowed, shall he be, letting the locks of the hair of his head grow long. All the days for which he hath separated himself unto Yahweh to no dead person, shall he go in. Neither for his father nor for his mother nor for his brother nor for his sister, shall he make himself unclean-not even for them, should they die, - because, his separation unto God, is upon his head, All his days of separation hallowed, is he unto Yahweh. But if one that is dying should die by him in a moment suddenly, then shall he count unclean his head of separation, - and shall shave his head, on the day he cleanseth himself, on the seventh day, shall he shave it. And on the eighth day, shall he bring in. two turtle-doves, or two young pigeons, - unto the triest, unto the entrance of the tent of meeting; and the priest shall make, of one a sin - bearer and of one an ascending-sacrifice, and so put a propitiatory-covering over him, for that he sinned in respect of the dead person, - thus shall he hallow his head on that day. Then shall be separate unto Yahweh his days of separation, and shall bring in a he-lamb a year old as a guilt-bearer, - and, the first days, shall be lost because his separation, was made unclean. And, this, is the law of the Separate One, on the day when he fulfilleth his days of separation, he shall be brought in unto the entrance of the tent of meeting: then shall he bring near as his offering unto Yahweh. - one he-lamb a year old, without defect for an ascending-sacrifice, and one ewe-lamb a year old without defect for a sin-bearer, - and one ram, without defect for a peace-offering; and a basket of unleavened cakes - fine meal in round cakes overflowed with oil, and thin cakes of unleavened bread, anointed with oil, - with their meal-offering and their drink-offerings. Then shall the priest bring them near before Yahweh, - and offer his sin-bearer and his ascending-sacrifice; and the ram, shall he offer as a peace-offering unto Yahweh, besides the basket of unleavened cakes, - and the priest shall offer the meal-offering thereof and the drink-offering thereof, Then shall the Separate One shave, at the entrance of the tent of meeting, his head of separation, - and take the hair of his head of separation, and put upon the fire, which is under the peace-offering. Then shall the priest take the shoulder far boiling from the ram, and one unleavened round cake from the basket, and one unleavened thin cake, - and place them on the hands, of the Separate One after he hath shaven off his hair of separation; and the priest shall wave them as a wave-offering before Yahweh, hallowed, it is for the priest, besides the wave breast, and be-sides the heave leg, - and, afterwards, may the Separate One drink wine. This is the law of One Separate what he shall vow, his offering unto Yahweh with respect to his separation, besides what his hand may obtain: as required by the vow that he shall vow, so, must he do, with respect to the law of his separation.
And, thus, shalt thou do unto them, to purify them, sprinkle upon them sin-cleansing water, - then shall they, cause a razor to pass over all their flesh, and shall wash their clothes and so make themselves pure.
And in your day of rejoicing and in your appointed seasons and in the beginnings of your months, then shall ye blow with the trumpets, over your ascending-sacrifices, and over your peace-offerings, - so shall they be unto you for a memorial before your God. I - Yahweh, am your God.
So the standard of the camp of the sons of Judah set forward first, by their hosts, and over his own host, was Nahshon, son of Amminadab;
And it came to pass when the ark set forward, that Moses said: Arise, O Yahweh! and scattered be thy foes, Let them that hate thee flee before thee;
So they sent forth a rumour of the land which they had spied out, among the sons of Israel, saying, - As touching the land through which we passed to spy it out, it is, land that eateth up them who dwell therein, And all the people that we saw in the midst thereof, were men of great stature.
and spake unto all the assembly of the sons of Israel, saying, - As for the land through which we passed to spy it out, Good, is the land, exceedingly, If Yahweh delight in us, then will he bring us into this and, and give it unto us, - A land which doth flow with milk and honey.
Now as for the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, - who returned and caused all the assembly to murmur against him by giving out rumour against the land,
Speak unto the sons of Israel, and thou shall say unto them, - When ye shall enter into the land of your dwelling-places, which, I, am giving unto you;

Then took Korah, son of Izhar son of Kohath son of Levi, - and Dathan and Abiram sons of Eliab, and On, son of Peleth sons of Reuben;
And Yahweh spake unto Aaron, I, therefore, lo! I have given unto thee the charge of my heave-offerings, - as to all the hallowed things of the sons of Israel - unto thee, have I given them. as pertaining to the anointing, and unto thy sons. for a statute age-abiding, This, shall be thine, out of the things most holy, out of the fire, - their every oblation - to the extent of their every meal-offering, and their every sin-bearer, and their every guilt-bearer wherewith they make amends unto me, most holy unto thee, shall it be and unto thy sons. read more. As something most holy, shall ye eat it, - every male, shall eat it, holy, shall it be unto thee. This, therefore, shall be thine - the heave-offering of their gift even all the wave-offerings of the sons of Israel, unto thee, have I given them and unto thy sons and unto thy daughters with thee by a statute age-abiding, - every one that is clean in thy house, shall eat it. All the best of oil, and all the best of new-wine and corn, - the firstfruits thereof which they shall give unto Yahweh, unto thee, have I given them. The firstfruits of all that is in their land which they shall bring in unto Yahweh, thine, shall it be, - every one that is clean in thy house, shall eat it: every devoted thing in Israel, thine, shall it be: every thing that is born first of all flesh that may be offered unto Yahweh among men and among beasts, shall be thine, - only thou shalt, redeem, the firstborn of men, and the firstborn of unclean beasts, shalt thou redeem. And, as to the redemption price thereof, from a month old, shalt thou redeem, by thine estimate five shekels of silver by the shekel of the sanctuary, - twenty gerahs, it is. Only a firstling ox or a firstling sheep or a firstling goat, shalt thou not redeem, hallowed, they are, - their blood, shalt thou dash against the altar and of their fat, shalt thou make a perfume, an altar-flame, for a satisfying odour unto Yahweh: and their flesh, shall be thine, - as the wave-breast and as the right leg, thine, shall it be: all the heave-offerings of the holy things which the sons of Israel shall heave up unto Yahweh, have I given unto thee and unto thy sons and unto thy daughters with thee by a statute age-abiding, - an age-abiding covenant of salt, it is before Yahweh, for thee and for thy seed with thee.
And ye shall not by reason of it bear sin, when ye offer up the best thereof, out of it; and the hallowed things of the sons of Israel, shall ye not profane neither shall ye die.
For I will honour, thee, exceedingly, and all that thou shalt say unto me, will I do. Do come therefore I pray thee oh revile me this people.
Who hath counted the dust of Jacob? Or who hath numbered the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the upright, And let my hereafter be like his!
Then spake Yahweh unto Moses saying: Phinehas on of Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, hath turned back my wrath front against the sons of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy, in their midst, so that I made not an end of the sons of Israel. in my jealousy. read more. Wherefore say, - Behold me! giving unto him my covenant of peace; so shall it prove to be unto him and unto his seed after him, the covenant of our age-abiding priesthood, because he was jealous for his God, and did put a propitiatory-covering over the sons of Israel.

When Azariah the chief priest and all the priests turned towards him, lo! he, was leprous, in his forehead, so they hastened him from thence, - yea, even he himself, hurried to go out, because Yahweh had smitten him. And it came to pass that, Uzziah the king, was a leper until the day of his death, and dwelt in a house apart - a leper, for he was cut off from the house of Yahweh, - and, Jotham his son, was over the house of the king, judging the people of the land.
Now, as they were taking out the silver which had been brought into the house of Yahweh, Hilkiah the priest found the Book of the Law of Yahweh, by the hand of Moses.

Honour thou Yahweh, with thy substance, and with the firstfruit of all thine increase;
A tree of life, is she, to them who secure her, - and, they who hold her fast, are every one to be pronounced happy.
He that concealeth hatred, hath false lips, and he that sendeth forth slander, the same, is a dullard.
A deceptive balance, is an abomination to Yahweh, but, a full weight, is his delight.

The Greek name given to the first five books of the O.T., which are also called 'the five books of Moses.' The many references to and quotations from them in other parts of the scripture, and allusions to them by Christ under the name of Moses, show plainly that Moses was the inspired writer of them, except of course the small portion that records his death and burial. PENTATEUCH. This word, which is derived from the Greek ???????????, from ?????, five, and ??????, a volume, signifies the collection of the five books of Moses, which are Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. That the Jews have acknowledged the authenticity of the Pentateuch, from the present time back to the era of their return from the Babylonish captivity, a period of more than two thousand three hundred years, admits not a possibility of doubt. The five books of Moses have been during that period constantly placed at the head of the Jewish sacred volume, and divided into fixed portions, one of which was read and explained in their synagogues, not only every Sabbath with the other Scriptures, but in many places twice a week, and not unfrequently every evening, when they alone were read. They have been received as divinely inspired by every Jewish sect, even by the Sadducees, who questioned the divinity of the remaining works of the Old Testament. In truth, the veneration of the Jews for their Scriptures, and above all for the Pentateuch, seems to have risen almost to a superstitious reverence. Extracts from the Mosaic law were written on pieces of parchment, and placed on the borders of their garments, or round their wrists and foreheads: nay, they at a later period counted, with the minutest exactness, not only the chapters and paragraphs, but the words and letters, which each book of their Scriptures contains. Thus also the translation, first of the Pentateuch, and afterward of the remaining works of the Old Testament, into Greek, for the use of the Alexandrian Jews, disseminated this sacred volume over a great part of the civilized world, in the language most universally understood, and rendered it accessible to the learned and inquisitive in every country; so as to preclude all suspicion that it could be materially altered by either Jews or Christians, to support their respective opinions as to the person and character of the Messiah; the substance of the text being, by this translation, fixed and authenticated at least two hundred and seventy years before the appearance of our Lord.
But, long previous to the captivity, two particular examples, deserving peculiar attention, occur in the Jewish history, of the public and solemn homage paid to the sacredness of the Mosaic law as promulgated in the Pentateuch; and which, by consequence, afford the fullest testimony to the authenticity of the Pentateuch itself: the one in the reign of Hezekiah, while the separate kingdoms of Judah and Israel still subsisted; and the other in the reign of his great grandson Josiah, subsequent to the captivity of Israel. In the former we see the pious monarch of Judah assembling the priests and Levites and the rulers of the people; to deplore with him the trespasses of their fathers against the divine law, to acknowledge the justice of those chastisements which, according to the prophetic warnings of that law, had been inflicted upon them; to open the house of God which his father had impiously shut, and restore the true worship therein according to the Mosaic ritual, 2Ki 18; 2Ch 29; 30; with the minutest particulars of which he complied, in the sin-offerings and the peace- offerings which, in conjunction with his people, he offered for the kingdom and the sanctuary and the people, to make atonement to God for them and for all Israel; restoring the service of God as it had been performed in the purest times. "And Hezekiah," says the sacred narrative, "rejoiced, and all the people, that God had prepared the people; for the thing was done suddenly," 2Ch 29:36; immediately on the king's accession to the throne, on the first declaration of his pious resolution. How clear a proof does this exhibit of the previous existence and clearly acknowledged authority of those laws which the Pentateuch contains!
But a yet more remarkable part of this transaction still remains. At this time Hoshea was king of Israel, and so far disposed to countenance the worship of the true God, that he appears to have made no opposition to the pious zeal of Hezekiah; who, with the concurrence of the whole congregation which he had assembled, sent out letters and made a proclamation, not only to his own people of Judah, 2Ch 30:1, "but to Ephraim and Manasseh and all Israel, from Beersheba even unto Dan, that they should come to the house of the Lord at Jerusalem, to keep the passover unto the Lord God of Israel; saying, Ye children of Israel, turn again to the Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and he will return to the remnant of you who are escaped out of the hands of the kings of Assyria; and be not ye like your fathers and your brethren, which trespassed against the Lord God of their fathers, who therefore gave them up to desolation as ye see. Now be ye not stiff-necked, as your fathers were; but yield yourselves unto the Lord, and enter into his sanctuary which he hath sanctified for ever, and serve the Lord your God, that the fierceness of his wrath may turn away from you. So the posts passed from city to city through the country of Ephraim and Manasseh even unto Zebulun," 2Ch 30:6, &c.
Now, can we conceive that such an attempt as this could have been made, if the Pentateuch containing the Mosaic code had not been as certainly recognised through the ten tribes of Israel as in the kingdom of Judah? The success was exactly such as we might reasonably expect if it were so acknowledged; for, though many of the ten tribes laughed to scorn and mocked the messengers of Hezekiah, who invited them to the solemnity of the passover, from the impious contempt which through long disuse they had conceived for it. "Nevertheless," says the sacred narrative, "divers of Asher and Manasseh and of Zebulun humbled themselves and came to Jerusalem; and there assembled at Jerusalem much people, to keep the feast of unleavened bread in the second month, a very great congregation; and they killed the passover, and the priests and Levites stood in their places after their manner, according to the law of Moses, the man of God. So there was great joy in Jerusalem; for since the time of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel, there was not the like at Jerusalem: and when all this was finished, all Israel that were present went out to the cities of Judah, and brake the images in pieces, and cut down the groves, and threw down the high places and the altars out of all Judah and Benjamin, in Ephraim also and Manasseh, until they had utterly destroyed them all," 2Ch 30:11; 31. Can any clearer proof than this be desired of the constant and universal acknowledgment of the divine authority of the Pentateuch throughout the entire nation of the Jews, notwithstanding the idolatries and corruptions which so often prevented its receiving such obedience as that acknowledgment ought to have produced? The argument from this certain antiquity of the Pentateuch, a copy of which existed in the old Samaritan character as well as in the modern Hebrew, is most conclusive as to the numerous prophecies of Christ, and the future and present condition of the Jews which it contains. These are proved to have been delivered many ages before they were accomplished; they could be only the result of divine prescience, and the uttering of them by Moses proves therefore the inspiration and the authority of his writings.
