Having obtained help from God, I continue to this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying no other things than those that the prophets and Moses said should come. That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first to rise from the dead, and should show light to the people, and to the nations.
He explained to them all the Scriptures about the things concerning him. He spoke about Moses and all the prophets.
You search (investigate) (study) the Scriptures because you think that in them you have everlasting life. These Scriptures testify about me. And yet you will not come to me that you may have life.
A great cloud of witnesses surround us. Therefore let us lay aside every weight, and the sin that easily entangles us. Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us. Look to (consider without distractions) Jesus, the Leader (Predecessor) and Finisher (Perfecter) of our faith. He despised the shame. He endured the stake for the joy that was set before him. Then he sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
God sent a man named John. (Malachi 3:1) He came to tell (witness) (testify) about the light and help people have faith. Not being the light he came to give a witness of it.
John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming: Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near. Isaiah spoke of John when he said: He is a voice shouting in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of Jehovah. Make his paths straight.' (Isaiah 40:3)
A voice of one calling: In the wilderness prepare the way for Jehovah. Make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
I baptize you with water because of your repentance. He that comes after me is mightier than I. He will baptize you with Holy Spirit and fire. I am not even good enough to carry his sandals. His winnowing shovel is in his hand. He will clean his threshing floor and gather his wheat into a barn. He will then burn the husks in a fire that cannot be put out.
He told the people: The man who comes after me is greater than I am. I am not worthy to stoop down and untie his shoes. I baptized (immersed) you with water, but he will baptize (Greek: baptizo: immerse, submerge) you with Holy Spirit.
Many people were expecting the Messiah. They reasoned in their hearts concerning John: Perhaps he was the Messiah. John answered, saying to them: I baptize you with water. He is coming who is mightier than I. I am not worthy to untie his shoelaces. He will baptize you in Holy Spirit and in fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand ready to thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor. He will gather the wheat into his barn. He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.read more.
He preached good news to the people by offering many encouraging words.
John spoke about him and declared: He is the one I said would come after me. He is greater than I am because he lived before me.
They went to John and said: Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, the one about whom you witnessed, he and the men with him baptize. John answered: A man can receive nothing unless it is given to him from heaven. You bear witness that I said I am not the Christ. I have been sent before him.read more.
He that has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom stands and listens to him. He rejoices greatly because he hears the bridegroom's voice. This fills me with joy. He must increase and I must decrease.
You sent people to John the Baptist and he has witnessed about the truth. The testimony I receive is not from man. However I say these things that you may be saved. He was the lamp that burns and shines. You were willing to rejoice for a season in his light.
I will send the helper from the Father, the Spirit of truth, which proceeds from the Father to bear witness of me.
We are witnesses of these things. The Holy Spirit, which God gave to those who obey him, also witnessed.
The Spirit itself (Greek:autos ho pneuma) (itself the Spirit) bears witness with our spirit (mind and heart), that we are children of God.
This is he who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ. He did not come with the water only, but with the water and with the blood. The Spirit gives witness because it is the truth. There are three that testify: (Latin Vulgate: tres testimonium: three that testify.) The Spirit, the water, and the blood, and the three are in agreement (accord) (concurrence) (harmony). If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater. The witness of God is this, that he gave witness concerning his Son.
Holy Spirit descended upon him in a bodily form like a dove. A voice came out of heaven. He said: You are my beloved Son. In you I am well pleased.
While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them. A voice came out of the cloud, saying: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.
A cloud hovered over them and a voice came out of the cloud: This is my Son the beloved listen to him!
The Father who sent me testifies about me. You have not heard his voice nor seen him at any time. You do not have his word dwelling in you. This is because you do not believe in the person he has sent.
The testimony I have is greater than that of John. The works I do are the works the Father gave me to accomplish. They testify that the Father has sent me.
Jesus answered them: Even if I bear witness about myself, my testimony is true! I know where I came from and I know where I am going. You do not know where I came from or where I am going.
You call me Teacher and Lord and you are right for I am.
Believe me that I am with the Father and the Father is with me, or else believe me because of the works.
Jesus replied: I told you and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father's name bear witness of me.
If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would have no sin. They have seen and hated both my Father and me.
You will receive power, when the Holy Spirit comes on you and you will be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
Beware of men! They will take you to court! They will have you beaten in their meeting places. You will be taken before governors and kings for my sake. This will serve as a testimony to them and to the people of the nations. When they hand you over, do not worry about what to say and how to say it. You will be given the words to speak at that time.read more.
You will not speak on your own. Your Father's Spirit will speak through you.
Even before all these things, they will capture you, and persecute you. You will be delivered to synagogues and prisons. You will be brought before kings and governors for my name's sake. It will give you an opportunity to witness.
They called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. Peter and John answered: You judge whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God. We cannot stop speaking the things we have seen and heard.read more.
When they further threatened them, they let them go. They found no basis for punishment because of the people for all men glorified God for that which was done.
Many have attempted to write an orderly narrative about the things that have taken place. They received testimony from those who were eyewitnesses from the beginning. Ministers of God's word delivered it to us.
Someone must join us as a witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. He must be one of the men who were in our group during the time that the Lord Jesus traveled about with us. This should be from the time John preached his message of baptism until the day Jesus was taken up from us to heaven. One who was with us from the baptism of John, to the day that he was received up from us must become a witness with us of his resurrection.
The apostles witnessed about the resurrection of the Lord Jesus with great power. Grace (God's loving kindness) was upon them all.
Those who came with him from Galilee to Jerusalem saw him. They are his witnesses to the people.
Who are you Lord? He asked. The Lord said: I am Jesus whom you persecute. Get up and go into the city, and it will be told to you what you must do.
He said: 'The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will. You are to see his righteous servant, and to hear him speak with his own voice. You will be a witness for him to tell everyone what you have seen and heard.
The following night the Lord stood by him and said: Be of good courage, Paul, for just as you testified about me in Jerusalem, so you also must bear witness at Rome.
Stand up on your feet. I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of these things that you have seen, and of those things I will show to you.
How shall we escape, if we neglect such a great salvation? It was first presented by the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard him.
I exhort the elders among you. I too am an older man and a witness of the sufferings of Christ. I am also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed.
We did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. We were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
We have heard that which was from the beginning. We have also seen it with our own eyes. We looked at it and touched it with our hands. It is the Word of life.
Sanctify the Christ as Lord (kurios: master) in your hearts. Always be ready to answer every man who asks you a reason for your hope, yet with meekness (mildness) and respect! Keep a good conscience. When you are spoken against, those who revile your good manner of life in Christ may be put to shame.
Do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me his prisoner. Join me in suffering for the good news according to the power of God.
