Jesus And Zacchaeus
2 Just then, there appeared a man named Zacchaeus, who was a wealthy, chief tax collector.
2 And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.

3 He was trying to see which one was Jesus, but could not due to the large crowd and [because] he was so short.
3 And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.

7 So, he came down immediately and welcomed Jesus gladly.
7 And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.
7 When they saw it, they all began to grumble, saying, “He has gone (c)to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.”
7 But all the people who saw this began to complain: "Jesus is going to be the guest of a notorious sinner!"
8 And when the crowd saw this, they began complaining [i.e., because Zacchaeus was a despised tax collector] and said, "He is going to lodge with a sinful man."
8 And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.
8 Zaccheus stopped and said to (C)the Lord, “Behold, Lord, half of my possessions I (d)will give to the poor, and if I have (D)defrauded anyone of anything, I (e)will give back (E)four times as much.”
8 But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, I’ll give(a) half of my possessions to the poor,(B) Lord! And if I have extorted(C) anything from anyone, I’ll pay(b) back four times as much!”(D)
8 Later, Zacchaeus stood up and announced to the Lord, "Look! I'm giving half of my possessions to the destitute, and if I have accused anyone falsely, I'm repaying four times as much as I owe."
9 Then Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord, I [plan to] give half of my possessions to poor people. And if I have cheated anyone out of something, [I promise] to repay them four times as much."
9 And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.
9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is (F)a son of Abraham.

11 For the Son of man came to search for and save those who were lost."
11 And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.

The Parable Of The Ten Minas
12 And as the crowd listened to these things, Jesus told them another parable, because He was close to Jerusalem and they assumed the kingdom of God was going to appear right away.
12 He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.
12 So He said, “(J)A nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself, and then return.
12 Therefore He said: “A nobleman traveled to a far country to receive for himself authority to be king(d) and then return.
12 So he said, "A prince went to a distant country to be appointed king and then to return.
13 So, He said, "A certain distinguished gentleman went to a distant country to receive a royal appointment [i.e., as king over a territory] and then return. [Note: This is the only parable of Jesus' that correlates with a known incident; that of Herod's son Archelaus going to Rome to receive from Caesar Augustus an appointment to rule over Judea, Samaria and Idumaea in
13 And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.
13 And he called ten of his slaves, and gave them ten (f)minas and said to them, ‘Do business with this (g)until I come back.’

14 But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.

15 And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.
15 When he returned, after receiving the kingdom, he ordered that these slaves, to whom he had given the money, be called to him so that he might know what business they had done.
15 “At his return, having received the authority to be king,(f) he summoned those slaves he had given the money to, so he could find out how much they had made in business.
15 "After he was appointed king, the prince came back. He ordered the servants to whom he had given the money to be called so he could find out what they had earned by investing.
16 And it happened when the gentleman returned, having received his appointment as king, that he ordered the slaves to whom he had given the [sums of] money, to report to him. He wanted to find out how much [money] they had made on their investments.
16 Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.
16 The first came forward and said, ‘Master, your mina has earned 10 more minas.’
16 The first servant came and said, "Sir, your coin has earned ten more coins.'
17 So, the first one appeared in front of him, and said, 'Master, your sum of money has earned ten times more.'
17 And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.
17 And he said to him, ‘Well done, good slave, because you have been (K)faithful in a very little thing, you are to be in authority over ten cities.’
17 “‘Well done, good(g) slave!’ he told him. ‘Because you have been faithful(K) in a very small matter, have authority over 10 towns.’
17 The king told him, "Well done, good servant! Because you have been trustworthy in a very small thing, take charge of ten cities.'
18 And the gentleman replied, 'Well done, you are a good slave. Because you have proven trustworthy over a [relatively] very small matter, you will [now] have charge over ten towns.'
18 And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds.
18 “The second came and said, ‘Master, your mina has made five minas.’
18 "The second servant came and said, "Your coin, sir, has earned five coins.'
19 Then the second slave appeared, and said, 'Master, your sum of money has earned five times more.'
19 And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities.
19 And he said to him also, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’
19 “So he said to him, ‘You will be over five towns.’
19 The king told him, "You take charge of five cities.'
20 And the gentleman said to him also, 'You [will] have charge over five towns.'
20 And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin:
20 Another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I kept put away in a handkerchief;
20 “And another came and said, ‘Master, here is your mina. I have kept it hidden away in a cloth
20 "Then the other servant came and said, "Sir, look! Here's your coin. I've kept it in a cloth for safekeeping
21 Then another slave appeared and said, 'Look, master, here is your sum of money. I kept it [safely] wrapped up in a cloth,
21 For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow.
21 for I was afraid of you, because you are an exacting man; you take up what you did not lay down and reap what you did not sow.’
21 because I was afraid of you, for you’re a tough man: you collect what you didn’t deposit and reap what you didn’t sow.’(L)
21 because I was afraid of you. You are a hard man. You withdraw what you didn't deposit and harvest what you didn't plant.'
22 for I was afraid of you, knowing you are a hard man to deal with and that you pick up [and keep] something you did not lay down [i.e., lose], and you harvest a crop that you did not plant.'
22 And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow:
22 He *said to him, ‘(m)By your own words I will judge you, you worthless slave. Did you know that I am an exacting man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow?
22 “He told him, ‘I will judge you by what you have said,(h) you evil slave! If you knew I was a tough man, collecting what I didn’t deposit and reaping what I didn’t sow,
22 The king told him, "I will judge you by your own words, you evil servant! You knew, did you, that I was a hard man, and that I withdraw what I didn't deposit and harvest what I didn't plant?
23 The gentleman replied to him, 'I will judge you [based] on what you [yourself] have [just] said, you evil slave. [Since] you knew that I am a hard man to deal with, picking up [and keeping] something I had not laid down, and harvesting a crop I had not planted,
23 Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?
23 Then why did you not put my money in the bank, and having come, I would have collected it with interest?’

24 then why did you not deposit my money in the bank? [Then] when I returned I could have withdrawn [the original sum of money] plus interest.'
24 And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.
24 Then he said to the bystanders, ‘Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’
24 So he said to those standing there, ‘Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has 10 minas.’
24 "So the king told those standing nearby, "Take the coin away from him and give it to the man who has the ten coins.'
25 Then he said to those who were standing around, 'Take the sum of money away from him and give it to the one who made ten times as much [with the original sum].'
25 (And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.)
25 And they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas already.’
25 “But they said to him, ‘Master, he has 10 minas.’
25 They answered him, "Sir, he already has ten coins!'
26 But the people said to him, 'Master, he [already] has ten times as much money [as you gave him].'
26 For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.
26 (L)I tell you that to everyone who has, more shall be given, but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away.
26 “‘I tell you, that to everyone who has, more will be given; and from the one who does not have, even what he does have will be taken away.(M)
26 "I tell you, to everyone who has something, more will be given, but from the person who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away.
27 [So the gentleman concluded], 'I tell you, to every person who [already] has something, [more] will be given, but from that person who has [almost] nothing, even [the little] he has will be taken away from him.
27 But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.
27 But (M)these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and (N)slay them in my presence.”

The Triumphal Entry
29 And when Jesus had said this, He went on ahead [of His disciples. See Matt. 21:1] up to Jerusalem.
29 And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,

30 Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither.
30 saying, “Go into the village ahead of you; there, as you enter, you will find a colt tied on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here.
30 and said, “Go into the village ahead of you. As you enter it, you will find a young donkey tied there, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here.
30 "Go into the village ahead of you," he said. "As you enter, you will find a colt tied up that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it along.
31 saying [to them], "Go into the village just ahead of you, and upon entering [it], you will find tied up [there] a colt that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it [here].
31 And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.
31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of it.’”
31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say this: ‘The Lord needs it.’”
31 If anyone asks you why you are untying it, say this: "The Lord needs it.'"
32 And if anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' you should say, 'The Lord needs it.'"
32 And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them.
32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as He had told them.

33 So, those who were sent [i.e., Jesus' disciples], went away and found [things] just as Jesus had told them.
33 And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt?
33 As they were untying the young donkey, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the donkey?”
33 While they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the colt?"
35 And they replied, 'The Lord needs it.'
35 And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon.
35 Then(S) they brought it to Jesus, and after throwing their robes on the donkey, they helped Jesus get on it.(T)
35 Then they brought the colt to Jesus and put their coats on it, and Jesus sat upon it.
36 So, they brought the colt to Jesus and spread their clothing on it, [then] placed Jesus on it [i.e., held the animal still as Jesus mounted it, since it had never been ridden before. See verse 30].
36 And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way.

37 And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;
37 As soon as He was approaching, near the descent of (U)the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to (V)praise God (p)joyfully with a loud voice for all the (q)miracles which they had seen,
37 Now He came near the path down the Mount of Olives, and the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles they had seen:
37 He was now approaching the descent from the Mount of Olives. The whole crowd of disciples began to rejoice and to praise God with a loud voice because of all the miracles they had seen.
38 Then, as He descended the Mount of Olives and got close to the city [i.e., Jerusalem], the entire crowd of disciples began joyfully praising God in loud voices because of all the powerful miracles they had seen [Him perform].
38 Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.

38 They said, "How blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!"
39 They were saying, 'May the King who comes in the name [i.e., by the authority] of the Lord, be blessed. May there be peace in heaven and praise [to God] in the highest [i.e., may this praise reach to the highest heaven].'
39 And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.
39 Some of the Pharisees from the crowd told Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.”
39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd told Jesus, "Teacher, tell your disciples to be quiet."
40 But some of the Pharisees from the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, speak sternly to your disciples [i.e., to prevent them from honoring Jesus]."
40 And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.
40 He replied, "I tell you, if they were quiet, the stones would cry out!"
Jesus Weeps Over Jerusalem
42 And when Jesus got close and saw the city [of Jerusalem], He cried over it,
42 Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.
42 saying, “If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes.
42 saying, “If you knew(AB) this day what would bring peace—but now it is hidden(AC) from your eyes.
42 "If you had only known today what could have brought you peace! But now it is hidden from your sight,
43 saying, "If [only] you people realized today those things which [could] lead [you] to peace! But now they are [being] hidden from your sight.
43 For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,
43 For the days will come upon you (s)when your enemies will (AC)throw up a (t)barricade against you, and (AD)surround you and hem you in on every side,
43 For the days will come on you(AD) when your enemies will build an embankment against you, surround you, and hem you in on every side.(AE)
43 because the days will come when your enemies will build walls around you, surround you, and close you in on every side.
44 For the days will come upon you when your enemies will build a dirt wall around you, surrounding you, and hemming you in on every side.
44 And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.
44 and they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and (AE)they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize (AF)the time of your visitation.”
44 They will crush you and your children within you to the ground,(AF) and they will not leave one stone on another(AG) in you, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”(AH)
44 They will level you to the ground you and those who live within your city limits. They will not leave one stone on another within your walls, because you didn't recognize the time when you were visited."
45 They will throw you and your children, [who are] within your walls, to the ground and they will not allow one stone to remain on top of another in your city because you did not recognize that [God was] visiting you." [Note: This "visitation" refers either to the redemption which they had rejected or to the punishment of the siege and destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70].
45 And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought;
45 Then Jesus went into the Temple and began to throw out those who were selling things.
The Cleansing Of The Temple
46 Then Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out those who sold [things there],
46 Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.
46 saying to them, “It is written, ‘(AH)And My house shall be a house of prayer,’ (AI)but you have made it a robbers’ (u)den.”
46 and He said, “It is written, My house will be a house of prayer,(AJ) but you have made it a den of thieves!”(AK)(m)
46 He told them, "It is written, "My house is to be called a house of prayer,' but you have turned it into a hideout for bandits!"
47 saying to them, "It is written [Isa. 56:7], 'And my house [i.e., the Temple] will be a house for prayer, but [Jer. 7:11] 'You have made it a hideout for thieves.'"
47 And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him,
47 And (AJ)He was teaching daily in the temple; but the chief priests and the scribes and the leading men among the people (AK)were trying to destroy Him,
47 Every day He was teaching(AL) in the temple complex. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people were looking for a way to destroy(AM) Him,
47 Then he began teaching in the Temple every day. The high priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people kept looking for a way to kill him,
48 And Jesus was teaching in the Temple every day. But the leading priests and the experts in the law of Moses and the leading men of the people were looking [for a way] to kill Him,
48 And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.
48 and they could not find (v)anything that they might do, for all the people were hanging on to (w)every word He said.
