'Your Enemy' in the Bible
“If you meet your enemy’s ox or his donkey wandering off, you must bring it back to him.
If you see the donkey of your enemy lying down under its burden, you will refrain from abandoning him. You will surely arrange [it] with him.
And you shall eat the fruit of your womb, the flesh of your sons and your daughters, whom Yahweh your God gave to you, {during the siege and during the distress} your enemy inflicts upon you.
{by refraining from giving} to [even] one of them any of the meat of his children that he eats, because [there is] not anything [that is] left over for him {during the siege and distress} that your enemy inflicts upon you.
and [even] concerning her afterbirth {that goes out} from between her feet and [also] concerning her children that she bears, because she eats them for lack of anything in secret {during the siege and during the distress} that your enemy inflicts upon her in your {towns}.
The God of {ancient time} [is] a hiding place, and underneath [are] [the] arms of eternity, and he drove out {from before} you your enemy, and he said, 'Destroy [them]!'
David’s men said to him, “Behold, this is the day of which the Lord said to you, ‘Behold, I will hand over your enemy to you, and you shall do to him as seems good to you.’” Then David arose [in the darkness] and stealthily cut off the hem (edge) of Saul’s robe.
Should a man arise to pursue you and to seek your life, may the life of my lord be wrapped in the pouch of the living with Yahweh your God. But as for the life of your enemy, he will sling it from within the pocket of the sling!
Then Abishai said to David, “God has given your enemy into your hand this day; now then, please let me strike him with the spear driving it to the ground with one stroke, and I will not strike him the second time.”
Samuel said, “Why then do you ask me, since the Lord has left you and has become your enemy?
They brought the head of Ish-bosheth to David at Hebron, and said to the king, “Look, the head of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, your enemy, who sought your life; thus the Lord has granted my lord the king vengeance this day on Saul and on his descendants.”
Gad went to David and told him, "Shall seven years of famine come upon your land? Or shall you flee for three months from your enemy with him in hot pursuit? Or shall there be three days of plague in your land? Now decide what I should tell the one who sent me."
three years of famine, or three months of devastation by your foes with the sword of your enemy overtaking you, or three days of the sword of the Lord—a plague on the land, the angel of the Lord bringing destruction to the whole territory of Israel.’ Now decide what answer I should take back to the One who sent me.”
“Why do You hide Your face [as if offended]And consider me Your enemy?
Do not rejoice and gloat when your enemy falls,And do not let your heart be glad [in self-righteousness] when he stumbles,
If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat;And if he is thirsty, give him water to drink;
The LORD has done that which he had purposed; he has fulfilled his word that he had commanded in the days of old: he has thrown down, and has not pitied: and he has caused your enemy to rejoice over you, he has set up the might of your adversaries.
Thus sayeth the LORD God: Because your enemy hath said upon you, 'Aha, the high everlasting places are now become ours':
The Lord has taken away the judgments against you;He has cleared away your enemies. The King of Israel, even the Lord [Himself], is in your midst; You will no longer fear disaster.
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor (fellow man) and hate your enemy.’
But I say to you, love your enemy and pray for those who persecute you,
But if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on his head.”
Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?
Be sober and alert. Your enemy the devil, like a roaring lion, is on the prowl looking for someone to devour.
