It is the object of this article to give a brief account of St. John's teaching as contained in his Gospel and Epistles. Without prejudging in any way the authorship of the Apocalypse, it will be more convenient that the doctrine of that book should be considered separately. Enough if it be said here that, despite the obvious and very striking difference in the form and style of the book, the underlying similarities between it and those to be now considered are no less remarkable. Careful students, not blinded by the symbolism and other peculiarities of the Revelation, who have concentrated attention upon its main ideas and principles, have come to the conclusion that if it did not proceed from the same pen that wrote the Gospel and Epistles, it belongs to the same school of Christian thought. By the word of LORD were the heavens made, and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.
He sends out his commandment upon earth. His word runs very swiftly.

And we know, and have believed the love that God has in us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this love has been fully perfected with us, so that we may have boldness in the day of judgment, because just as that man is, we also are in this world.
If any man says, I love God, and hates his brother, he is a liar. For he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?
Every man who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been begotten from God, and every man who loves him who begot, also loves him who has been begotten from him.
Because everything that has been begotten from God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that overcomes the world, our faith.
We know that every man who has been begotten from God does not sin, but he who was begotten from God keeps himself, and the evil does not touch him.
