What is more, I continue to consider all these things to be a loss for the sake of what is far more valuable, knowing the Messiah Jesus, my Lord. It is because of him that I have experienced the loss of all those things. Indeed, I consider them rubbish in order to gain the Messiah

So, I am all the more eager to send him to you people, so that when you see him again you will be glad, and that my sorrow will be lessened [i.e., in knowing that you are relieved to see that he is well again].

but the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the Good News.

These, indeed, out of love, knowing that, for the defence of the glad-message, I am set;

However, I hope by the favour of the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you very soon, that I may have some encouragement by knowing the state of your affairs:

I pray you to give me the utter joy of knowing you are living in harmony, with the same feelings of love, with one heart and soul,

in knowing him, and the virtue of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his passions, that I might be conformable unto his death,
