In those days came John the Immerser, preaching in the wilderness of Judea,
But the same John had his clothing of camel's hair, and a girdle of leather around his loins, and his food was locusts and wild honey.
Then came Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be immersed by him.
But John forbade him, saying: I have need to be immersed by thee, and comest thou to me?

and he said to his servants: This is John The Immerser; he has risen from the dead; and for this reason the powers of the spiritual world are active within him.
For Herod had laid hold of John, and bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip.
For John said to him: It is not lawful for you to have her.
And being previously instigated by her mother, she said: Give me here in a dish the head of John the Immerser?
They replied: Some say that thou art John the Immerser; others, Elijah; others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.
And after six days, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up into a high mountain apart:
Then, the disciples understood that he spoke to them of John the Immerser.
The immersion of John, whence was it? from heaven, or from men? But they reasoned among themselves, and said, If we reply, From heaven, he will say to us, Why then did you not believe him?
But if we reply, From men, we fear the multitude; for all regard John as a prophet.
For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you believed him not. But the publicans and the harlots believed him. And you, when you had seen it, after ward felt no regret, that you might believe him.
John was immersing in the wilderness, and preaching the immersion of repentance in order to the remission of sins.

And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was immersed by John in the Jordan.
But after John was delivered up, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,
And when he had gone a little further thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship, mending their nets.
And forthwith, having gone out of the synagogue, they went into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.
And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees were in the habit of fasting; and they came, and said to him: Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples fast not?
and James the sou of Zebedee, and John the brother of James: and these he surnamed Boanerges, which means, sons of thunder:
And he suffered no one to follow him, except Peter and James and John the brother of James.
And Herod the king heard of him, for his name had be come known; and he said: John the Immerser has risen from the dead, and for this reason, the powers of the spiritual world are active within him.
But when Herod heard of him, he said: John, whom I beheaded, has risen from the dead.
For Herod himself had sent and taken John, and bound him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip; for he had married her.
For John said to Herod: It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.
for Herod feared John, because he knew him to be a just and holy man; and he kept him in safety. And having heard him, he did many things, and heard him with pleasure.
But she went out, and said to her mother: What shall I ask? She replied: The head of John the Immerser.
And she came in immediately, with haste, to the king, and made her request, saying: I desire that you give me, at once, in a dish, the head of John the Immerser.
They answered: John the Immerser; and others, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.
And after six days, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up alone into a high mountain apart; and he was transfigured before them;
And John answered him and said: Teacher, we saw one casting out demons in thy name, and he does not follow us: and we forbade him, because he does not follow us.
And James and John the sons of Zebedee came to him, and said: Teacher, we desire you to do for us whatever we shall ask.
And when the ten heard it, they began to be displeased with James and John.
Was the immersion of John from heaven, or from men? answer me.
But if we say, From men, they feared the people; for all regarded John as a prophet indeed.
And as he sat on the mount of Olives, opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately:
And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be in dismay and anguish of soul.
But the angel said to him: Fear not, Zachariah; for your prayer is heard, and your wife Elizabeth shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.
And his mother answered and said: Not so: but he shall be called John.
And having asked for a writing tablet, he wrote, saying: His name is John. And they were all astonished.
Annas and Caiaphas being chief priests, the word of God came to John the son of Zachariah, in the wilderness.
While the people were in suspense, and all were reasoning in their hearts about John, whether he was the Christ or not,
John answered them all, saying: I indeed immerse you in water; but there comes One mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to loose; he will immerse you in the Holy Spirit and in fire.

And the disciples of John told him of all these things.
And John called to him two of his disciples, and sent them to Jesus, and said: Art thou he that was to come, or must we look for another?
And the men came to him and said: John the Immerser has sent us to thee, and says, Art thou he that was to come, or must we look for another?
And Jesus answered and said to them: Go and tell John what you have seen and heard; that the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them;
And when the messengers of John had departed, he began to say to the multitudes concerning John: What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

And all the people, and the publicans that heard him, vindicated God, by being immersed with the immersion of John;

And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to go in but Peter and James and John, and the father and the mother of the child.
And Herod the tetrarch heard of all things that were done by him; and he was perplexed, because it was said by some, that John had risen from the dead;
And Herod said: John I have beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.
They answered and said: John the Immerser; but some, Elijah; and others, that some prophet of ancient times has risen again.
And it came to pass, about eight days after these words, that he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.
And John answered and said: Master, we saw a certain one casting out demons in thy name; and we forbade him, because he does not follow with us.
And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said: Lord, is it thy will that we command fire to come down from heaven and destroy them, even as Elijah did?
And it came to pass, as he was in a certain place praying, that, when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him: Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.
The law and the prophets were till John. Since that time, the kingdom of God is preached, and every one enters it by force.
Was the immersion of John from heaven, or from men?
But if we say, From men, all the people will stone us; for they believe that John was a prophet.
And he sent Peter and John, saying: Go, make ready the passover for us, that we may eat it.
John testified of him, and cried, saying: This is he of whom I said: He that comes after me, is now before me, for he existed before me.
And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him: Who are you?
John answered them, saying: I immerse in water; but there stands one among you whom you know not.
These things were done in Beth any, beyond the Jordan, where John was immersing.
The next day John saw Jesus coming to him, and said: Behold the Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world.
And John testified, saying: I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.
Again the next day, John was standing with two of his disciples.
One of the two that heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter.
And John also was immersing in Aenon, near Salim, because there was much water there. And they came and were immersed;
There arose, therefore, a dispute between some of John's disciples and a Jew, about purification.
And they came to John, and said to him: Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you bore testimony, behold, he immerses, and all are going to him.
John answered and said: A man can receive nothing unless it be given to him from heaven.
When, therefore, the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and immersing more disciples than John,
But I have testimony greater than that of John; for the works which the Father has given me to finish, these very works which I do, testify concerning me, that the Father has sent me.
And he went away again beyond the Jordan, to the place where John first immersed, and there he abode.
And many came to him, and said: John did no sign; but all things that John said of this man were true.
