To this very day Jehovah has not given you a heart to know, eyes to see, or ears to hear. I led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not worn out on you. Your sandal has not worn out on your foot. You have not eaten bread. You have not drunk wine or strong drink. This in order that you might know that I am Jehovah your God. When you reached this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon and Og the king of Bashan came out to meet us for battle. We defeated them! We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of the Manassites. Keep the words of this covenant to do them that you may prosper in all that you do. You stand today, all of you, before Jehovah your God: your leaders, your tribes, your elders and your officers, even all the men of Israel. Your little ones, your wives, and the alien who is within your camps, from the one who chops your wood to the one who draws your water, that you may enter into the covenant with Jehovah your God, and into His oath that Jehovah your God is making with you today. Jehovah will confirm today with this promise that you are his people and that he is your God. This is what he told you. This is what he promised your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob with an oath.

Jehovah sent Aaron and Moses with a message for the sons of Israel and for the king. He also ordered Aaron and Moses to free the people from Egypt.

I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you. I will put my words in his mouth. He will speak to them all that I command him.

Jehovah your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your fellow Israelites. Listen to him!

Jehovah would speak with Moses in person (intimately) (face to face) just as someone speaks with a friend. Moses would then return to the camp. But the young man who was his helper, Joshua son of Nun, stayed in the Tent.

It was the fortieth year, eleventh month, on the first day of the month. Moses spoke to the children of Israel, according to all the commandments Jehovah (YHWH) gave him for them.

Jehovah said: Do this to prove to the Israelites that Jehovah, the God of their ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, has appeared to you.

Since that time no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom Jehovah knew face to face (intimately),

I will come down and speak with you there. I will take some of the spirit I have given and give it to them. Then they can help you bear the responsibility for these people. You will not have to bear it alone.

The chariots of God are myriads in number, thousands upon thousands. Jehovah is among them. The God of Sinai is in his holy place.

At the end of forty years, Jehovah's angel appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sinai in a flame of fire in a bush. (Exodus 3:3)

Jehovah came from Mount Sinai. He rose like the sun over Edom and shone on his people from Mount Paran. Ten thousand angels were with him. A flaming fire was at his right hand.

This one was with our father in the congregation in the wilderness. The angel spoke to him on Mount Sinai. He received the living oracles to give to us.

The earth shook, the heavens also dropped at the presence of God: Sinai was moved at the presence of God, the God of Israel.

Jehovah said to Moses: I will come to you in a thick cloud. The people will hear me speaking with you and will believe you from now on. Moses gave Jehovah the people's answer. Jehovah continued: Go to the people and tell them to spend today and tomorrow purifying themselves for worship. They must wash their clothes. They should be ready in three days. I will descend to Mount Sinai, where all of them can see me. Warn the people that they are forbidden to touch any part of the mountain. Anyone who touches the mountain will be put to death, with stones or arrows, and no one must touch the body of a person killed in this way. Even an animal that touches this mountain must be put to death. You may go up the mountain only after a signal is given on the trumpet. Moses went down from the mountain to the people. He consecrated the people, and they washed their garments. He said to the people: Get ready for the third day. Do not go near a woman for sexual intercourse. On the morning of the third day there were thunder and lightning flashes and a thick cloud upon the mountain. A very loud trumpet sounded. It caused all the people in the camp to tremble. Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God. They stood at the foot of the mountain. Mount Sinai was all in smoke because Jehovah descended upon it in fire. Its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace. The whole mountain quaked violently! The sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder. Moses spoke and God answered him with thunder. Jehovah descended on the top of Mount Sinai. Jehovah called Moses to the top of the mountain. Moses climbed to the peak of Mount Sinai. Jehovah spoke to Moses: Go down and warn the people. They should not break through to gaze at Jehovah. Many of them would perish. Let the priests who come near to Jehovah consecrate (purify) themselves, or else Jehovah will destroy them. Moses said to Jehovah: The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai for you warned us. You said: 'Put limits around the mountain and set it apart as holy.' Jehovah replied to him: You and Aaron come up to me. But do not let the priests and the people break through to come up to Jehovah, or he will destroy some of them. Moses returned to the people and told them.

Jehovah said to Moses: Come up on the mountain and stay here for a while. I will give you the two stone tablets on which I have written the laws that my people must obey. Moses and Joshua his assistant got ready. Moses started up the mountain to meet with God. He said to the elders: Wait here for us until we return to you. Aaron and Hur are with you. Moses went up to the mountain. The cloud covered the mountain. The glory of Jehovah rested on Mount Sinai. The cloud covered it for six days. God called to Moses on the seventh day. He spoke from inside the cloud. To the eyes of the Israelites the appearance of the glory of Jehovah was like a consuming fire on the top of the mountain. Moses entered the midst of the cloud as he went up to the mountain. He was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

Moses went back down the mountain. He carried the two stone tablets with the commandments written on both sides. God made the tablets and engraved the commandments on them.

Be ready in the morning. Come up on Mount Sinai and present yourself to me there on top of the mountain. No man may come with you or even be seen anywhere on the mountain. Even the flocks and herds may not graze in front of this mountain. Moses cut two more stone tablets. Early the next morning he carried them up Mount Sinai, just as Jehovah commanded.
