"There will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, men fainting from fear and foreboding of what is coming on the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
Now some were shouting one thing, some another; for the assembly was in confusion, and most of the people did not know why they had come together.
For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
But the natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.
And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
Then the Jews began to argue among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"
And at this sound the crowd came together, and they were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were amazed and wondered, saying, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?
And all the people were amazed and said, "Could this be the Son of David?" But when the Pharisees heard this they said, "It is only by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons."
And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, "He is possessed by Beelzebub, and by the prince of demons he casts out the demons."
Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done; and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead, by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the old prophets had risen again. And Herod said, "John I have beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?" So he sought to see him.
At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus, and he said to his servants, "This is John the Baptist, he has risen from the dead; that is why these powers are at work in him."
King Herod heard of it, for Jesus' name had become well known. Some said, "John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why these powers are at work in him." But others said, "It is Elijah." And others said, "It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old." But when Herod heard, he said, "This is John, whom I beheaded; he has been raised from the dead!"
Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?"
And they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?"
But their minds were hardened; for to this day, when they read the old covenant, the same veil remains unlifted, because only in Christ is it removed.
And the men marveled, saying, "What sort of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?"
And they were filled with awe, and said to one another, "Who is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!"
He said to them, "Where is your faith?" And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, "Who then is this, that he commands even the winds and water, and they obey him?"
Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which he purchased with the blood of his Own. I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.
And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome, but he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, patient when wronged, with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God will grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth,
preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; correct, rebuke, and exhort, with great patience and instruction. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires,
Obey your leaders and submit to them; for they are keeping watch over your souls, as men who will have to give account. Let them do this with joy, and not with grief, for that would be of no advantage to you.
All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness;
until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to become mature, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the cunning of men, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming.
And this is my prayer, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ;
But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their sense trained by practice to distinguish good from evil.
And Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. And let us make three tabernaclesone for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." For he did not know what to say, for they were greatly afraid.
And Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make here three tabernaclesone for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."
As the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah"not knowing what he said. While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.
So they went out quickly and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had gripped them. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.
In addition, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, and when they did not find his body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said; but him they did not see."read more.
And he said to them, "O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!
Many of his disciples, when they heard it, said, "This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?"
Then some of his disciples said to one another, "What is this that he says to us, 'A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me'; and, 'because I go to the Father'?" They said, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We do not know what he is saying." Now Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, "Are you asking yourselves about what I meant when I said, 'A little while, and you will not see me; and again a little while, and you will see me'?
We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair;
For even when we came into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were afflicted at every turnconflicts on the outside and fears within.
My children, with whom I am again in labor until Christ is formed in you I could wish to be present with you now and to change my tone, for I am perplexed about you.
I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you by the grace of Christ and turning to a different gospel which is really not another gospel; but there are some who are disturbing you, and want to pervert the gospel of Christ.
But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how is it that you turn back again to the weak and worthless elemental things? Do you desire to be enslaved all over again?
I have confidence in the Lord that you will take no other view than mine; and the one who is troubling you will bear his judgment, whoever he is.
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak; and he will tell you things to come.
But, as it is written, "No eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived what God has prepared for those who love him," God has revealed them to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God.
