'Yourself' in the Bible
Don’t brag about yourself before the king,and don’t stand in the place of the great;
Don’t answer a fool according to his foolishnessor you’ll be like him yourself.
If you have been foolish by exalting yourselfor if you’ve been scheming,put your hand over your mouth.
Don’t be excessively righteous, and don’t be overly wise. Why should you destroy yourself?
for you know that many times you yourself have cursed others.
You said to yourself:“I will ascend to the heavens;I will set up my throneabove the stars of God.I will sit on the mount of the gods’ assembly,in the remotest parts of the North.
What are you doing here? Who authorized you to carve out a tomb for yourself here, carving your tomb on the height and cutting a crypt for yourself out of rock?
You were secure in your wickedness;you said, ‘No one sees me.’Your wisdom and knowledgeled you astray.You said to yourself,‘I exist, and there is no one else.’
So take your stand with your spellsand your many sorceries,which you have wearied yourself with from your youth.Perhaps you will be able to succeed;perhaps you will inspire terror!
Then you will say within yourself,‘Who fathered these for me?I was deprived of my children and unable to conceive,exiled and wandering—but who brought them up?See, I was left by myself—but these, where did they come from?’”
Wake yourself, wake yourself up!Stand up, Jerusalem,you who have drunk the cup of His furyfrom the hand of the Lord;you who have drunk the goblet to the dregs—the cup that causes people to stagger.
Stand up, shake the dust off yourself!Take your seat, Jerusalem.Remove the bonds from your neck,captive Daughter Zion.”
You have set up your memorialbehind the door and doorpost.For away from Me, you stripped,went up, and made your bed wide,and you have made a bargain for yourself with them.You have loved their bed;you have gazed on their genitals.
and if you offer yourself to the hungry,and satisfy the afflicted one,then your light will shine in the darkness,and your night will be like noonday.
then you will delight yourself in the Lord,and I will make you ride over the heights of the land,and let you enjoy the heritage of your father Jacob.”For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.
Like cattle that go down into the valley,the Spirit of the Lord gave them rest.You led Your people this wayto make a glorious name for Yourself.
Lord, after all this, will You restrain Yourself?Will You keep silent and afflict severely?
They say, ‘Keep to yourself,don’t come near me, for I am too holy for you!’These practices are smoke in My nostrils,a fire that burns all day long.
Have you not brought this on yourselfby abandoning the Lord your Godwhile He was leading you along the way?
But where are your gods you made for yourself?Let them rise up and save youin your time of disaster if they can,for your gods are as numerous as your cities, Judah.
And you, devastated one, what are you doingthat you dress yourself in scarlet,that you adorn yourself with gold jewelry,that you enlarge your eyes with paint?You beautify yourself for nothing.Your lovers reject you;they want to take your life.
This is what the Lord said to me: “Go and buy yourself a linen undergarment and put it on, but do not put it in water.”
What will you say when He appointsclose friends as leaders over you,ones you yourself trained?Won’t labor pains seize you,as they do a woman in labor?
And when you ask yourself,“Why have these things happened to me?”It is because of your great guiltthat your skirts have been stripped off,your body exposed.
You will, on your own, relinquish your inheritancethat I gave you.I will make you serve your enemiesin a land you do not know,for you have set My anger on fire;it will burn forever.
for this is what the Lord says, ‘I am about to make you a terror to both yourself and those you love. They will fall by the sword of their enemies before your very eyes. I will hand Judah over to the king of Babylon, and he will deport them to Babylon and put them to the sword.
“This is what the Lord said to me: Make chains and yoke bars for yourself and put them on your neck.
Set up road markers for yourself;establish signposts!Keep the highway in mind,the way you have traveled.Return, Virgin Israel!Return to these cities of yours.
Watch! Hanamel, the son of your uncle Shallum, is coming to you to say, ‘Buy my field in Anathoth for yourself, for you own the right of redemption to buy it.’
“Then my cousin Hanamel came to the guard’s courtyard as the Lord had said and urged me, ‘Please buy my field in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, for you own the right of inheritance and redemption. Buy it for yourself.’ Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord.
Oh, Lord God! You Yourself made the heavens and earth by Your great power and with Your outstretched arm. Nothing is too difficult for You!
You performed signs and wonders in the land of Egypt and do so to this very day both in Israel and among mankind. You made a name for Yourself, as is the case today.
But if you do not surrender to the officials of the king of Babylon, then this city will be handed over to the Chaldeans. They will burn it down, and you yourself will not escape from them.’”
All your wives and sons will be brought out to the Chaldeans. You yourself will not escape from them, for you will be seized by the king of Babylon and this city will burn down.’”
But as for you, do you seek great things for yourself? Stop seeking! For I am about to bring disaster on every living creature’—this is the Lord’s declaration—‘but I will grant you your life like the spoils of war wherever you go.’”
Announce it in Egypt, and proclaim it in Migdol!Proclaim it in Memphis and in Tahpanhes!Say: Take positions! Prepare yourself,for the sword devours all around you.
Baldness is coming to Gaza.Ashkelon will become silent,a remnant of their valley.How long will you gash yourself?
צ TsadeThe hearts of the people cry out to the Lord.Wall of Daughter Zion,let your tears run down like a riverday and night.Give yourself no reliefand your eyes no rest.
ס SamekYou have covered Yourself in anger and pursued us;You have killed without compassion.
You have covered Yourself with a cloudso that no prayer can pass through.
שׂ SinSo rejoice and be glad, Daughter Edom,you resident of the land of Uz!Yet the cup will pass to you as well;you will get drunk and expose yourself.
Lord, restore us to Yourself, so we may return;renew our days as in former times,
The Spirit entered me and set me on my feet. He spoke with me and said: “Go, shut yourself inside your house.
Take an iron plate and set it up as an iron wall between yourself and the city. Turn your face toward it so that it is under siege, and besiege it. This will be a sign for the house of Israel.
“Also take wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet, and spelt. Put them in a single container and make them into bread for yourself. You are to eat it during the number of days you lie on your side, 390 days.
You took some of your garments and made colorful high places for yourself, and you engaged in prostitution on them. These places should not have been built, and this should never have happened!
“you built yourself a mound and made yourself an elevated place in every square.
You yourself must bear the consequences of your indecency and detestable practices”—this is the Lord’s declaration.
These things will be done to you because you acted like a prostitute with the nations, defiling yourself with their idols.
“In addition, they sent for men who came from far away when a messenger was dispatched to them. And look how they came! You bathed, painted your eyes, and adorned yourself with jewelry for them.
By your wisdom and understandingyou have acquired wealth for yourself.You have acquired gold and silverfor your treasuries.
“Son of man, lament for Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him:You compare yourself to a lion of the nations,but you are like a monster in the seas.You thrash about in your rivers,churn up the waters with your feet,and muddy the rivers.”
“Be prepared and get yourself ready, you and all your company who have been mobilized around you; you will be their guard.
Therefore, may my advice seem good to you my king. Separate yourself from your sins by doing what is right, and from your injustices by showing mercy to the needy. Perhaps there will be an extension of your prosperity.”
Instead, you have exalted yourself against the Lord of heaven. The vessels from His house were brought to you, and as you and your nobles, wives, and concubines drank wine from them, you praised the gods made of silver and gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see or hear or understand. But you have not glorified the God who holds your life-breath in His hand and who controls the whole course of your life.
“Suddenly, another beast appeared, a second one, that looked like a bear. It was raised up on one side, with three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. It was told, ‘Get up! Gorge yourself on flesh.’
“Don’t be afraid, Daniel,” he said to me, “for from the first day that you purposed to understand and to humble yourself before your God, your prayers were heard. I have come because of your prayers.
Therefore, this is what the Lord says:Your wife will be a prostitute in the city,your sons and daughters will fall by the sword,and your land will be divided upwith a measuring line.You yourself will die on pagan soil,and Israel will certainly go into exilefrom its homeland.
Your presumptuous heart has deceived you,you who live in clefts of the rockin your home on the heights,who say to yourself,“Who can bring me down to the ground?”
Now, daughter who is under attack,you slash yourself in grief;a siege is set against us!They are striking the judge of Israelon the cheek with a rod.
You will sow but not reap;you will press olivesbut not anoint yourself with oil;and you will tread grapesbut not drink the wine.
One who scatters is coming up against you.Man the fortifications!Watch the road!Brace yourself!Summon all your strength!
You also will become drunk;you will hide yourself.You also will seek refuge from the enemy.
and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written:He will give His angels orders concerning you,and they will support you with their handsso that you will not strikeyour foot against a stone.”
Then Jesus told him, “See that you don’t tell anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses prescribed, as a testimony to them.”
honor your father and your mother;and love your neighbor as yourself.
The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.
“I have sinned by betraying innocent blood,” he said.“What’s that to us?” they said. “See to it yourself!”
and saying, “The One who would demolish the sanctuary and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross!”
telling him, “See that you say nothing to anyone; but go and show yourself to the priest, and offer what Moses prescribed for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
“The second is: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other command greater than these.”
And to love Him with all your heart, with all your understanding, and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself, is far more important than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices.”
So he took Him to Jerusalem, had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here.
Then He said to them, “No doubt you will quote this proverb to Me: ‘Doctor, heal yourself. So all we’ve heard that took place in Capernaum, do here in Your hometown also.’”
Then He ordered him to tell no one: “But go and show yourself to the priest, and offer what Moses prescribed for your cleansing as a testimony to them.”
Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself don’t see the log in your eye? Hypocrite! First take the log out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck in your brother’s eye.
Jesus went with them, and when He was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to tell Him, “Lord, don’t trouble Yourself, since I am not worthy to have You come under my roof.
He answered:Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.
Then I’ll say to myself, “You have many goods stored up for many years. Take it easy; eat, drink, and enjoy yourself.”’
and said, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!”
Then one of the criminals hanging there began to yell insults at Him: “Aren’t You the Messiah? Save Yourself and us!”
“Who are you, then?” they asked. “We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What can you tell us about yourself?”
For no one does anything in secret while he’s seeking public recognition. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.”
So the Pharisees said to Him, “You are testifying about Yourself. Your testimony is not valid.”
“We aren’t stoning You for a good work,” the Jews answered, “but for blasphemy, because You—being a man—make Yourself God.”
Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, how is it You’re going to reveal Yourself to us and not to the world?”
But Paul called out in a loud voice, “Don’t harm yourself, because all of us are here!”
Take these men, purify yourself along with them, and pay for them to get their heads shaved. Then everyone will know that what they were told about you amounts to nothing, but that you yourself are also careful about observing the law.
commanding his accusers to come to you.] By examining him yourself you will be able to discern all these things we are accusing him of.”
Agrippa said to Paul, “It is permitted for you to speak for yourself.”Then Paul stretched out his hand and began his defense:
Therefore, any one of you who judges is without excuse. For when you judge another, you condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the same things.
But because of your hardness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath, when God’s righteous judgment is revealed.
Now if you call yourself a Jew, and rest in the law, boast in God,
you then, who teach another, don’t you teach yourself? You who preach, “You must not steal”—do you steal?
The commandments:Do not commit adultery;do not murder;do not steal;do not covet;and whatever other commandment—all are summed up by this: Love your neighbor as yourself.
Do you have a conviction? Keep it to yourself before God. The man who does not condemn himself by what he approves is blessed.
For the entire law is fulfilled in one statement: Love your neighbor as yourself.
But have nothing to do with irreverent and silly myths. Rather, train yourself in godliness,
Pay close attention to your life and your teaching; persevere in these things, for by doing this you will save both yourself and your hearers.
