Tell us, therefore, how thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?" read more.
Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, "Why tempt ye me ye hypocrites? Let me see the tribute money." And they took him a penny. And he said unto them, "Whose is this image and superscription?" They said unto him, "Caesar's." Then said he unto them, "Give therefore to Caesar, that which is Caesar's: and give unto God, that which is God's." When they heard that, they marveled, and left him and went their way.

And they sent unto him certain of the Pharisees with Herod's servants, to take him in his words. And as soon as they were come, they said unto him, "Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: For thou considerest not the degree of men, but teachest the way of God truly: Is it lawful to pay tribute to Caesar, or not? Ought we to give, or ought we not to give?" He understood their dissimulation, and said unto them, "Why tempt ye me? Bring me a penny, that I may see it." read more.

There were present, at the same season, that showed him of the Galileans, whose blood Pilate mingled with their own sacrifice.

And after that, he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, "Follow me."


Let me see the tribute money." And they took him a penny. And he said unto them, "Whose is this image and superscription?"


And every man went unto his own city, there to be taxed. And Joseph also ascended from Galilee, out of a city called Nazareth, into Jewry: unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem: because he was of the house and lineage of David: to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, which was with child.


And they began to accuse him saying, "We have found this fellow, perverting the people and forbidding to pay tribute to Caesar: and saying that he is Christ, a King."


And this taxing was the first executed, and when Quirinius was leftenant in Syria.


And it chanced, in those days, that there went out a commandment from Augustus the Emperor, that all the world should be taxed.
