Psalm 78

² I will sing a song that imparts wisdom; I will make insightful observations about the past.

² I will ^(C)open my mouth in a parable;I will utter ^(D)dark sayings of old,

² I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:

² I will declare wise sayings;I will speak mysteries from the past^(C)—

² I will tell a parable, speaking riddles from long ago

⁴ we will not hide from their descendants. We will tell the next generation about the Lord's praiseworthy acts, about his strength and the amazing things he has done.

⁴ We will ^(F)not conceal them from their children,But ^(G)tell to the generation to come the praises of the Lord,And His strength and His ^(H)wondrous works that He has done.

⁴ We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.

⁴ We must not hide them from their children,but must tell a future generationthe praises of the Lord,His might, and the wonderful worksHe has performed.^(E)

⁴ We will not withhold them from their descendants; we'll declare to the next generation the praises of the LORD his might and awesome deeds that he has performed.

⁶ so that the next generation, children yet to be born, might know about them. They will grow up and tell their descendants about them.

^{6 (M)}That the generation to come might know, even ^(N)the children yet to be born,That they may arise and ^(O)tell them to their children,

⁶ That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:

⁶ so that a future generation—children yet to be born—might know.They were to rise and tell their children^(G)

⁶ in order that the next generation children yet to be born will know them and in turn teach them to their children.

⁸ Then they will not be like their ancestors, who were a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that was not committed and faithful to God.

⁸ And ^(R)not be like their fathers,A ^(S)stubborn and rebellious generation,A generation that ^(T)did not ^(d)prepare its heartAnd whose spirit was not ^(U)faithful to God.

⁸ And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.

⁸ Then they would not be like their fathers,a stubborn and rebellious generation,a generation whose heart was not loyaland whose spirit was not faithful to God.^(I)

⁸ They will not be like the rebellious generation of their ancestors, a rebellious generation, whose heart was not steadfast, and whose spirits were unfaithful to God.

¹⁰ They did not keep their covenant with God, and they refused to obey his law.

¹⁰ They ^(X)did not keep the covenant of GodAnd refused to ^(Y)walk in His law;

¹⁰ They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;

¹⁰ They did not keep God’s covenantand refused to live by His law.^(K)

¹² He did amazing things in the sight of their ancestors, in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan.

¹⁴ He led them with a cloud by day, and with the light of a fire all night long.

¹⁴ In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.

¹⁸ They willfully challenged God by asking for food to satisfy their appetite.

¹⁸ And in their heart they ^(AJ)put God to the testBy asking ^(AK)food according to their desire.

¹⁸ And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.

¹⁸ They deliberately^(a) tested God,demanding the food they craved.^(S)

¹⁸ To test God was in their minds, when they demanded food to satisfy their cravings.

²⁰ Yes, he struck a rock and water flowed out, streams gushed forth. But can he also give us food? Will he provide meat for his people?"

²⁰ “Behold, He ^(AM)struck the rock so that waters gushed out,And streams were overflowing;Can He give bread also?Will He provide ^(g)(AN)meat for His people?”

²⁰ Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?

²⁰ Look! He struck the rock and water gushed out;torrents overflowed.^(T)But can He also provide breador furnish meat for His people?”^(U)

²⁰ It's true that Moses struck the rock so that water flowed forth and torrents of water gushed out, but is he also able to give bread or to supply meat for his people?"

²² because they did not have faith in God, and did not trust his ability to deliver them.

²² Because they ^(AP)did not believe in GodAnd did not trust in His salvation.

²² Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:

²² because they did not believe Godor rely on His salvation.^(W)

²² because they didn't believe in God and didn't trust in his deliverance.

²⁴ He rained down manna for them to eat; he gave them the grain of heaven.

²⁴ He ^(AR)rained down manna upon them to eatAnd gave them ^(i)(AS)food from heaven.

²⁴ And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.

²⁴ He rained manna for them to eat;He gave them grain from heaven.^(Y)

²⁴ so that manna rained down on them for food and he sent them the grain of heaven.

²⁶ He brought the east wind through the sky, and by his strength led forth the south wind.

²⁶ He ^(AU)caused the east wind to blow in the heavensAnd by His ^(m)power He directed the south wind.

²⁶ He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.

²⁶ He made the east wind blow in the skiesand drove the south wind by His might.^(AA)

²⁶ He stirred up the east wind in the heavens and drove the south wind by his might.

²⁸ He caused them to fall right in the middle of their camp, all around their homes.

²⁸ Then He let them fall in the midst of ^(o)their camp,Round about their dwellings.

²⁸ And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.

³⁰ They were not yet filled up, their food was still in their mouths,

³⁴ When he struck them down, they sought his favor; they turned back and longed for God.

³⁴ When He killed some of them,the rest began to seek Him;they repented and searched for God.^(AG)

³⁴ When he struck them, they sought him; they repented, and eagerly sought God.

³⁶ But they deceived him with their words, and lied to him.

³⁶ But they ^(BH)deceived Him with their mouthAnd ^(BI)lied to Him with their tongue.

³⁶ Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.

³⁸ Yet he is compassionate. He forgives sin and does not destroy. He often holds back his anger, and does not stir up his fury.

³⁸ But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.

³⁸ Yet He was compassionate;He atoned for^(f) their guiltand did not destroy them.He often turned His anger asideand did not unleash^(g) all His wrath.^(AK)

³⁸ But he, being merciful, forgave their iniquity and didn't destroy them; He restrained his anger and didn't vent all his wrath.

⁴⁰ How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness, and insulted him in the desert!

⁴⁰ How often they ^(BQ)rebelled against Him in the wildernessAnd ^(BR)grieved Him in the ^(BS)desert!

⁴⁰ How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!

⁴² They did not remember what he had done, how he delivered them from the enemy,

⁵⁰ He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence;

⁵⁰ He cleared a path for His anger.He did not spare them from deathbut delivered their lives to the plague.^(AW)

⁵⁰ He blazed a path for his anger; he did not stop short from killing them, but handed them over to pestilence.

⁵² Yet he brought out his people like sheep; he led them through the wilderness like a flock.

⁵² But He ^(CM)led forth His own people like sheepAnd guided them in the wilderness ^(CN)like a flock;

⁵² But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.

⁵² He led His people out like sheepand guided them like a flock in the wilderness.^(AZ)

⁵⁴ He brought them to the border of his holy land, to this mountainous land which his right hand acquired.

⁵⁴ And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, even to this mountain, which his right hand had purchased.

⁵⁶ Yet they challenged and defied the sovereign God, and did not obey his commands.

⁵⁶ Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies:

⁵⁶ But they rebelliously tested the Most High God,for they did not keep His decrees.^(BE)

⁵⁶ But they tested the Most High God by rebelling against him, and they did not obey his statutes.

⁵⁸ They made him angry with their pagan shrines, and made him jealous with their idols.

⁵⁸ For they ^(CZ)provoked Him with their ^(DA)high placesAnd ^(DB)aroused His jealousy with their ^(DC)graven images.

⁵⁸ For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.

⁵⁸ They enraged Him with their high placesand provoked His jealousy with their carved images.^(BG)

⁵⁸ they angered him with their high places and with their carved images they made him jealous.

⁶⁰ He abandoned the sanctuary at Shiloh, the tent where he lived among men.

⁶⁰ So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men;

⁶² He delivered his people over to the sword, and was angry with his chosen nation.
