2 I will (C)open my mouth in a parable;I will utter (D)dark sayings of old,

2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:

2 I will declare wise sayings;I will speak mysteries from the past(C)

2 I will tell a parable, speaking riddles from long ago

3 What we have heard and learned -- that which our ancestors have told us --

3 Which we have heard and known,And (E)our fathers have told us.

3 Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.

3 things we have heard and knownand that our fathers have passed down to us.(D)

3 things that we have heard and known and that our ancestors related to us.

4 we will not hide from their descendants. We will tell the next generation about the Lord's praiseworthy acts, about his strength and the amazing things he has done.

4 We will (F)not conceal them from their children,But (G)tell to the generation to come the praises of the Lord,And His strength and His (H)wondrous works that He has done.

4 We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.

4 We must not hide them from their children, but must tell a future generationthe praises of the Lord,His might, and the wonderful worksHe has performed.(E)

4 We will not withhold them from their descendants; we'll declare to the next generation the praises of the LORD his might and awesome deeds that he has performed.

5 He established a rule in Jacob; he set up a law in Israel. He commanded our ancestors to make his deeds known to their descendants,

5 For He established a (I)testimony in JacobAnd appointed a (J)law in Israel,Which He (K)commanded our fathersThat they should (c)(L)teach them to their children,

5 For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:

5 He established a testimony in Jacoband set up a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathersto teach to their children(F)

5 He established a decree in Jacob, and established the Law in Israel, that he commanded our ancestors to reveal to their children

6 so that the next generation, children yet to be born, might know about them. They will grow up and tell their descendants about them.

6 (M)That the generation to come might know, even (N)the children yet to be born,That they may arise and (O)tell them to their children,

6 That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:

6 so that a future generation—children yet to be born—might know. They were to rise and tell their children(G)

6 in order that the next generation children yet to be born will know them and in turn teach them to their children.

7 Then they will place their confidence in God. They will not forget the works of God, and they will obey his commands.

7 That they should put their confidence in GodAnd (P)not forget the works of God,But (Q)keep His commandments,

7 That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:

7 so that they might put their confidence in Godand not forget God’s works, but keep His commands.(H)

7 Then they will put their trust in God and they will not forget his awesome deeds. Instead, they will keep his commandments.

8 Then they will not be like their ancestors, who were a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that was not committed and faithful to God.

8 And (R)not be like their fathers,A (S)stubborn and rebellious generation,A generation that (T)did not (d)prepare its heartAnd whose spirit was not (U)faithful to God.

8 And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.

8 Then they would not be like their fathers,a stubborn and rebellious generation,a generation whose heart was not loyaland whose spirit was not faithful to God.(I)

8 They will not be like the rebellious generation of their ancestors, a rebellious generation, whose heart was not steadfast, and whose spirits were unfaithful to God.

10 They did not keep their covenant with God, and they refused to obey his law.

10 They (X)did not keep the covenant of GodAnd refused to (Y)walk in His law;

10 They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;

10 They did not keep God’s covenantand refused to live by His law.(K)

10 They did not keep God's covenant, and refused to live by his Law.

11 They forgot what he had done, the amazing things he had shown them.

13 He divided the sea and led them across it; he made the water stand in a heap.

13 He (AC)divided the sea and caused them to pass through,And He made the waters stand (AD)up like a heap.

13 He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap.

13 He split the sea and brought them across;the water stood firm like a wall.(N)

13 He divided the sea so that they were able to cross; he caused the water to stand in a single location.

14 He led them with a cloud by day, and with the light of a fire all night long.

14 Then He led them with the cloud by (AE)dayAnd all the night with a (AF)light of fire.

14 In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.

14 He led them with a cloud by dayand with a fiery light throughout the night.(O)

14 He led them with a cloud during the day, and during the night with light from the fire.

15 He broke open rocks in the wilderness, and gave them enough water to fill the depths of the sea.

15 He (AG)split the rocks in the wildernessAnd gave them abundant drink like the ocean depths.

15 He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths.

15 He split rocks in the wildernessand gave them drink as abundant as the depths.(P)

15 He caused the rocks to split in the wilderness, and gave them water as from an abundant sea.

16 He caused streams to flow from the rock, and made the water flow like rivers.

16 He (AH)brought forth streams also from the rockAnd caused waters to run down like rivers.

16 He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.

16 He brought streams out of the stoneand made water flow down like rivers.(Q)

16 He brought streams from rock, causing water to flow like a river.

17 Yet they continued to sin against him, and rebelled against the sovereign One in the desert.

17 Yet they still continued to sin against Him,To (AI)rebel against the Most High in the desert.

17 And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness.

17 But they continued to sin against Him,rebelling in the desert against the Most High.(R)

17 But time and again, they sinned against him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert.

18 They willfully challenged God by asking for food to satisfy their appetite.

18 And in their heart they (AJ)put God to the testBy asking (AK)food according to their desire.

18 And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.

18 They deliberately(a) tested God,demanding the food they craved.(S)

18 To test God was in their minds, when they demanded food to satisfy their cravings.

19 They insulted God, saying, "Is God really able to give us food in the wilderness?

19 Then they spoke against God;They said, “(AL)Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?

19 Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?

19 They spoke against God, saying,“Is God able to provide food in the wilderness?

19 They spoke against God by asking, "Is God able to prepare a feast in the desert?

20 Yes, he struck a rock and water flowed out, streams gushed forth. But can he also give us food? Will he provide meat for his people?"

20 “Behold, He (AM)struck the rock so that waters gushed out,And streams were overflowing; Can He give bread also? Will He provide (g)(AN)meat for His people?”

20 Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?

20 Look! He struck the rock and water gushed out;torrents overflowed.(T)But can He also provide breador furnish meat for His people?”(U)

20 It's true that Moses struck the rock so that water flowed forth and torrents of water gushed out, but is he also able to give bread or to supply meat for his people?"

21 When the Lord heard this, he was furious. A fire broke out against Jacob, and his anger flared up against Israel,

21 Therefore the Lord heard and (h)was (AO)full of wrath; And a fire was kindled against JacobAnd anger also mounted against Israel,

21 Therefore the LORD heard this, and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel;

21 Therefore, the Lord heard and became furious;then fire broke out against Jacob, and anger flared up against Israel(V)

21 Therefore, when the LORD heard this, he was angry, and fire broke out against Jacob. Moreover, his anger flared against Israel,

22 because they did not have faith in God, and did not trust his ability to deliver them.

22 Because they (AP)did not believe in GodAnd did not trust in His salvation.

22 Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:

22 because they did not believe Godor rely on His salvation.(W)

22 because they didn't believe in God and didn't trust in his deliverance.

23 He gave a command to the clouds above, and opened the doors in the sky.

23 Yet He commanded the clouds aboveAnd (AQ)opened the doors of heaven;

23 Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,

23 He gave a command to the clouds aboveand opened the doors of heaven.(X)

23 Yet he commanded the skies above and the doors of the heavens to open,

24 He rained down manna for them to eat; he gave them the grain of heaven.

24 He (AR)rained down manna upon them to eatAnd gave them (i)(AS)food from heaven.

24 And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.

24 He rained manna for them to eat;He gave them grain from heaven.(Y)

24 so that manna rained down on them for food and he sent them the grain of heaven.

25 Man ate the food of the mighty ones. He sent them more than enough to eat.

25 Man did eat the bread of (j)angels; He sent them (k)food (l)(AT)in abundance.

25 Man did eat angels' food: he sent them meat to the full.

25 People(b) ate the bread of angels.(c)He sent them an abundant supply of food.(Z)

26 He brought the east wind through the sky, and by his strength led forth the south wind.

26 He (AU)caused the east wind to blow in the heavensAnd by His (m)power He directed the south wind.

26 He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.

26 He made the east wind blow in the skiesand drove the south wind by His might.(AA)

26 He stirred up the east wind in the heavens and drove the south wind by his might.

27 He rained down meat on them like dust, birds as numerous as the sand on the seashores.

27 When He rained (n)meat upon them like the dust,Even (AV)winged fowl like the sand of the seas,

27 He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea:

27 He rained meat on them like dust, and winged birds like the sand of the seas.

27 He caused meat to rain on them like dust and winged birds as the sand of the sea.

28 He caused them to fall right in the middle of their camp, all around their homes.

28 Then He let them fall in the midst of (o)their camp,Round about their dwellings.

28 And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.

28 He made them fall in His camp, all around His tent.(d)(e)(AB)

28 He caused these to fall in the middle of the camp and all around their tents.

29 They ate until they were stuffed; he gave them what they desired.

29 So they (AW)ate and were well filled,And their desire He gave to them.

29 So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire;

29 They ate and were completely satisfied, for He gave them what they craved.(AC)

29 So they ate and were very satisfied, because he granted their desire.

30 They were not yet filled up, their food was still in their mouths,

30 (p)Before they had satisfied their desire,(AX)While their food was in their mouths,

30 They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths,

30 Before they had satisfied their desire, while the food was still in their mouths,

30 However, before they had fulfilled their desire, while their food was still in their mouths,

31 when the anger of God flared up against them. He killed some of the strongest of them; he brought the young men of Israel to their knees.

31 The (AY)anger of God rose against themAnd killed (q)some of their (AZ)stoutest ones,And (r)subdued the choice men of Israel.

32 Despite all this, they continued to sin, and did not trust him to do amazing things.

32 In spite of all this they (BA)still sinnedAnd (BB)did not believe in His wonderful works.

32 For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works.

32 Despite all this, they kept sinningand did not believe His wonderful works.(AE)

32 In spite of all of this, they kept on sinning and didn't believe in his marvelous deeds.

33 So he caused them to die unsatisfied and filled with terror.

33 So He brought (BC)their days to an end in (s)futilityAnd their years in sudden terror.

33 Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble.

33 He made their days end in futility, their years in sudden disaster.(AF)

33 So he made their days end in futility, and their years with sudden terror.

34 When he struck them down, they sought his favor; they turned back and longed for God.

34 When He killed them, then they (BD)sought Him,And returned and searched (BE)diligently for God;

34 When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and inquired early after God.

34 When He killed some of them, the rest began to seek Him;they repented and searched for God.(AG)

34 When he struck them, they sought him; they repented, and eagerly sought God.

35 They remembered that God was their protector, and that the sovereign God was their deliverer.

36 But they deceived him with their words, and lied to him.

36 But they (BH)deceived Him with their mouthAnd (BI)lied to Him with their tongue.

36 But they deceived Him with their mouths, they lied to Him with their tongues,(AI)

36 But they deceived him with their mouths; they lied to him with their tongues.

37 They were not really committed to him, and they were unfaithful to his covenant.

37 For their heart was not (BJ)steadfast toward Him,Nor were they faithful in His covenant.

37 For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant.

37 their hearts were insincere toward Him,and they were unfaithful to His covenant.(AJ)

37 For their hearts weren't committed to him, and they weren't faithful to his covenant.

38 Yet he is compassionate. He forgives sin and does not destroy. He often holds back his anger, and does not stir up his fury.

38 But He, being (BK)compassionate, (t)(BL)forgave their iniquity and did not destroy them; And often He (u)(BM)restrained His angerAnd did not arouse all His wrath.

38 But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.

39 Thus (BN)He remembered that they were but (BO)flesh,A (v)(BP)wind that passes and does not return.

39 For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.

39 He remembered that they were only flesh,a wind that passes and does not return.(AL)

39 For he remembered that they were only flesh, a passing wind that doesn't return.
