How shall we sing the LORD's song in a strange land?

Thus the children of Israel shall sit a great while without king and prince, without offering and alter, without priest and revelation.

And held the feast of tabernacles as it is written, and offered burnt sacrifices daily, in order: according to the custom, day by day. There were certain Greeks among them, that came to pray at the feast.

And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, which were of all nations under heaven.

And he arose and went on, and behold, a man of Ethiopia which was a chamberlain and of great authority with Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, and had the rule of all her treasure, came to Jerusalem for to pray.

The chief priests, and the elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, for to put him to death, but found none: insomuch that when many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses, and said, "This fellow said, I can destroy the temple of God, and build the it again in three days."

And as the seven days should have been ended, the Jews which were of Asia when they saw him in the temple, they moved all the people and laid hands on him crying, "Men of Israel, help. This is the man that teacheth all men everywhere against the people, and the law, and this place. Moreover also he hath brought Greeks into the temple, and hath polluted this holy place." Woe be to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye which tithe mint, anise, and cumin, and leave the weightier matters of the law undone: judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to have left the other undone.

And the Pharisees came together unto him, and divers of the scribes which came from Jerusalem. And when they saw certain of his disciples eat bread with common hands, that is to say, with unwashen hands, they complained. And when they come from the market, except they wash themselves they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have taken upon them to observe, as the washing of cups and cruses, and of brazen vessels, and of tables. Then asked him the Pharisees and scribes, "Why walk not thy disciples according to the traditions of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?" He answered and said unto them, "Well prophesied hath Isaiah of you hypocrites as it is written, 'This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.' In vain they worship me, teaching doctrines which are nothing but the commandments of men, for ye lay the commandment of God apart, and ye observe the traditions of men as the washing of cruses and of cups, and many other such like things ye do." And he said unto them, "Well, ye cast aside the commandment of God, to maintain your own traditions. For Moses said, 'Honour thy father and thy mother,' and, 'Whosoever curseth father or mother, let him die for it.' But ye say, 'A man shall say to his father or mother, Corban; which is, that thou desirest of me, to help thee with, is given to God.' And so ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother, making the word of God of none effect through your own traditions which ye have ordained. And many such things ye do."

Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees from Jerusalem, saying, "Why do thy disciples transgress the traditions of the elders? For they wash not their hands, when they eat bread." He answered, and said unto them, "Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God, through your traditions?read more.
For God commanded, saying, 'Honour thy father and mother,' and, 'He that curseth father or mother, shall suffer death.' But ye say, 'Every man shall say to his father or mother: That which thou desirest of me to help thee with, is given God.' And so shall he not honour his father or his mother. And thus have ye made, that the commandment of God is without effect, through your traditions. Hypocrites; well prophesied of you Isaiah, saying, 'This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouths, and honoureth me with their lips, howbeit their hearts are far from me: But in vain they worship me, teaching doctrines which are nothing but men's precepts.'"

In that time went Jesus, on the Sabbath day, through the corn; and his disciples were a hungered, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat. When the Pharisees saw that, they said unto him, "Behold: thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the Sabbath day."

And it chanced that he went through the corn fields on the Sabbath day; and his disciples, as they went on their way, began to pluck the ears of corn. And the Pharisees said unto him, "Behold, why do they on the Sabbath day that which is not lawful?"

It happened on an after Sabbath, that he went through the corn field, and that his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and ate them, and rubbed them in their hands. And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, "Why do ye that which is not lawful to be done on the Sabbath days?"

For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands often, eat not; observing the traditions of the elders. And when they come from the market, except they wash themselves they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have taken upon them to observe, as the washing of cups and cruses, and of brazen vessels, and of tables.

When the Pharisee saw that, he marveled that he had not first washed before dinner.

"Two men went up into the temple to pray: the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank thee that I am not as other men are; extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or as this publican. I fast twice in the week. I give tithe of all that I possess.'

which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify it. For after the most straitest sect of our lay, lived I a Pharisee.

Then the chief priest rose up, and all they that were with him: which is the sect of the Sadducees: and were full of indignation,

When he saw many of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, "O generation of vipers, who hath taught you to flee from the vengeance to come?

Then came the Sadducees came unto him, which say there is no resurrection. And they asked him, saying,

The same day the Sadducees came to him, which say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him,

Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection. And they asked him,

And his disciples asked of him, saying, "Why then say the scribes, that Elijah must first come?"

And he came to his disciples, and saw much people about them, and the scribes disputing with them.

And it fortuned, after three days, that they found him in the temple sitting in the midst of the doctors: both hearing them, and posing them.

And it chanced on the morrow that their rulers, and elders, and scribes:

Woe be unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye which compass sea and land, to bring one into your belief: and when he is brought, ye make him twofold more the child of hell, than ye yourselves are.

And the saying pleased the whole multitude well. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith, and of the holy ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicholas, a convert of Antioch,

When the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and virtuous converts followed Paul and Barnabas, which spake to them and exhorted them to continue in the grace of God.

After two days followed Easter, and the days of sweet bread. And the high priests and the scribes sought means, how they might take him by craft and put him to death.

Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus had done. If we let him escape thus, all men will believe on him. And the Romans shall come and take away our country and the people." And one of them named Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year, said unto them, "Ye perceive nothing at all: nor yet consider that it is expedient for us, that one man die for the people, and not that all the people perish."

They shall excommunicate you: yea the time shall come, that whosoever killeth you, will think that he doth God true service.

As they spake unto the people, the priests and the ruler of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, taking it grievously that they taught the people and preached in Jesus the resurrection from death. And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold until the next day. For it was now eventide.

Then the chief priest rose up, and all they that were with him: which is the sect of the Sadducees: and were full of indignation, and laid hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison.

For ye have heard of my conversation in times past in the Jews' ways, how that beyond measure I persecuted the congregation of God, and spoiled it: and prevailed in the Jews' law, above many of my companions, which were of mine own nation, and was a much more fervent maintainer of the traditions of the elders.

Then arose there up certain of the sect of the Pharisees, which did believe: saying that it was needful to circumcise them and to command them to keep the law of Moses.

Then came certain from Jewry and taught the brethren, "Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses ye cannot be saved." And when there was risen dissension and disputing not a little unto Paul and Barnabas, against them: they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should ascend to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question.

And when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him in the face, for he was worthy to be blamed. For yer that certain came from James, he ate with the gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision, and the other Jews dissembled likewise; Insomuch that Barnabas was brought into their simulation also.read more.
But when I saw that they went not the right way after the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter, before all men, "If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of the gentiles, and not as do the Jews: why causest thou the gentiles to live as do the Jews?" We which are Jews by nature and not sinners of the gentiles, know that a man is not justified by the deeds of the law: but by the faith of Jesus Christ - and therefore we have believed on Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ and not by the deeds of the law: because that no flesh shall be justified by the deeds of the law.
