but which of you, with all his disquietude, can add one moment to the period of his life?
when you are brought into the synagogues, and before magistrates and rulers, be not sollicitous what to say in your own defence;
but when they take you. into custody, be not sollicitous, how or what ye shall speak, for at the very instant you shall be inspir'd what to say.
I therefore direct you, not to be sollicitous, with regard to life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor with regard to the body, what clothes ye shall wear: Is not life it self a greater gift than food; and the body a greater gift than rayment?
therefore make no such sollicitous enquiries, as what shall we eat? or what shall we drink? or how shall we be clothed?
therefore sollicitous about the morrow: for the morrow shall be taken up with the cares of the morrow, the trouble of the day is sufficient for one day.
fix it therefore in your mind, not to think beforehand about your defence.
set a guard upon yourselves, that ye be not stupified by surfeiting and drunkenness, or by the disquietudes of this life, and so that day come upon you with a surprize.
the Lord is coming: be not in any manner of sollicitude, but in all your occasions lay your requests before God by prayer and supplication accompany'd by thanksgiving.
if then you can't effect so small a matter, why are you disquieted about a much longer time?
but Jesus replied to her, Martha, Martha, you trouble yourself about a world of cares:
but the cares of this life, the deceitful love of riches, and a crowd of different passions, stifle the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
And as for rayment, why should that give you pain? consider the lillies of the field how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin.
besides these troubles from without, that which crouds upon me daily, the care of all the churches.
he that is married is worldly concern'd, how he may please his wife.
the unmarried is religiously concerned, how he may please the Lord:
therefore don't be concern'd about what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; but lay aside all your anxiety:
things which the Gentiles are so thoughtful about, and which your heavenly Father knows that you want.
neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
for it is enough that the Gentiles are so concern'd about these things: as for you, your father is acquainted with all your wants.
Wherefore (said he to his disciples,) be not sollicitous for your life, what ye shall eat; nor for the body, what ye shall put on.
now when they shall lead you to deliver you up, be not sollicitous about your defence, don't premeditate upon it; but what shall be suggested to you at the very occasion, that deliver: for it is not you that will plead, but the holy spirit.
but Martha perplex'd with the hurry of her affairs, came to him, and said, Lord, don't you observe my sister has left me to serve all alone: direct her therefore to give me some assistance.
consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap: nor have cellar or barn: are not you of much greater value than the fowls?
now if God thus adorns the flower of the field, which thriving to day, is to morrow thrown into the oven, how much more shall he provide for you, if you have any degree of faith?
why do you observe the mote that is in your brother's eye, and not consider the beam that is in your own eye?
consider the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor lay up any stores; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not ye of much greater value than they?
for the holy spirit shall instruct you on the very occasion, what is proper to be said.
