'Promise' in the Bible
Then they summoned the man who used to be blind a second time and said to him, "Promise before God to tell the truth. We know that this man is a sinner."
So then, exalted to the right hand of God, and having received the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father, he has poured out what you both see and hear.
For the promise is for you and your children, and for all who are far away, as many as the Lord our God will call to himself."
"But as the time drew near for God to fulfill the promise he had declared to Abraham, the people increased greatly in number in Egypt,
And we proclaim to you the good news about the promise to our ancestors,
that this promise God has fulfilled to us, their children, by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second psalm, 'You are my Son; today I have fathered you.'
And now I stand here on trial because of my hope in the promise made by God to our ancestors,
a promise that our twelve tribes hope to attain as they earnestly serve God night and day. Concerning this hope the Jews are accusing me, Your Majesty!
For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would inherit the world was not fulfilled through the law, but through the righteousness that comes by faith.
For if they become heirs by the law, faith is empty and the promise is nullified.
For this reason it is by faith so that it may be by grace, with the result that the promise may be certain to all the descendants -- not only to those who are under the law, but also to those who have the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all
He did not waver in unbelief about the promise of God but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God.
This means it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God; rather, the children of promise are counted as descendants.
For this is what the promise declared: "About a year from now I will return and Sarah will have a son."
in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles, so that we could receive the promise of the Spirit by faith.
What I am saying is this: The law that came four hundred thirty years later does not cancel a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to invalidate the promise.
For if the inheritance is based on the law, it is no longer based on the promise, but God graciously gave it to Abraham through the promise.
Why then was the law given? It was added because of transgressions, until the arrival of the descendant to whom the promise had been made. It was administered through angels by an intermediary.
But the scripture imprisoned everything and everyone under sin so that the promise could be given -- because of the faithfulness of Jesus Christ -- to those who believe.
And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants, heirs according to the promise.
But one, the son by the slave woman, was born by natural descent, while the other, the son by the free woman, was born through the promise.
But you, brothers and sisters, are children of the promise like Isaac.
that you were at that time without the Messiah, alienated from the citizenship of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
namely, that through the gospel the Gentiles are fellow heirs, fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus.
"Honor your father and mother," which is the first commandment accompanied by a promise, namely,
For "physical exercise has some value, but godliness is valuable in every way. It holds promise for the present life and for the life to come."
From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to further the promise of life in Christ Jesus,
Therefore we must be wary that, while the promise of entering his rest remains open, none of you may seem to have come short of it.
Now when God made his promise to Abraham, since he could swear by no one greater, he swore by himself,
And so by persevering, Abraham inherited the promise.
In the same way God wanted to demonstrate more clearly to the heirs of the promise that his purpose was unchangeable, and so he intervened with an oath,
But Melchizedek who does not share their ancestry collected a tithe from Abraham and blessed the one who possessed the promise.
And let us hold unwaveringly to the hope that we confess, for the one who made the promise is trustworthy.
By faith he lived as a foreigner in the promised land as though it were a foreign country, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, who were fellow heirs of the same promise.
By faith, even though Sarah herself was barren and he was too old, he received the ability to procreate, because he regarded the one who had given the promise to be trustworthy.
Although these false teachers promise such people freedom, they themselves are enslaved to immorality. For whatever a person succumbs to, to that he is enslaved.
The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some regard slowness, but is being patient toward you, because he does not wish for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
But, according to his promise, we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness truly resides.
Now this is the promise that he himself made to us: eternal life.
