'Wait' in the Bible
“For Your salvation I wait, O Lord.
But if he did not lie in wait for him, but God let him fall into his hand, then I will appoint you a place to which he may flee.
But to the elders he said, “Wait here for us until we return to you. And behold, Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a legal matter, let him approach them.”
Moses therefore said to them, “Wait, and I will listen to what the Lord will command concerning you.”
If he pushed him of hatred, or threw something at him lying in wait and as a result he died,
‘But if he pushed him suddenly without enmity, or threw something at him without lying in wait,
“But if there is a man who hates his neighbor and lies in wait for him and rises up against him and strikes him so that he dies, and he flees to one of these cities,
Now therefore, arise by night, you and the people who are with you, and lie in wait in the field.
So Abimelech and all the people who were with him arose by night and lay in wait against Shechem in four companies.
So he took his people and divided them into three companies, and lay in wait in the field; when he looked and saw the people coming out from the city, he arose against them and slew them.
When it was told to the Gazites, saying, “Samson has come here,” they surrounded the place and lay in wait for him all night at the gate of the city. And they kept silent all night, saying, “Let us wait until the morning light, then we will kill him.”
Now she had men lying in wait in an inner room. And she said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” But he snapped the cords as a string of tow snaps when it touches fire. So his strength was not discovered.
So Delilah took new ropes and bound him with them and said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” For the men were lying in wait in the inner room. But he snapped the ropes from his arms like a thread.
On the fifth day he arose to go early in the morning, and the girl’s father said, “Please sustain yourself, and wait until afternoon”; so both of them ate.
And they commanded the sons of Benjamin, saying, “Go and lie in wait in the vineyards,
would you therefore wait until they were grown? Would you therefore refrain from marrying? No, my daughters; for it is harder for me than for you, for the hand of the Lord has gone forth against me.”
Then she said, “Wait, my daughter, until you know how the matter turns out; for the man will not rest until he has settled it today.”
And you shall go down before me to Gilgal; and behold, I will come down to you to offer burnt offerings and sacrifice peace offerings. You shall wait seven days until I come to you and show you what you should do.”
If they say to us, ‘Wait until we come to you’; then we will stand in our place and not go up to them.
Then Samuel said to Saul, “Wait, and let me tell you what the Lord said to me last night.” And he said to him, “Speak!”
Now, my father, see! Indeed, see the edge of your robe in my hand! For in that I cut off the edge of your robe and did not kill you, know and perceive that there is no evil or rebellion in my hands, and I have not sinned against you, though you are lying in wait for my life to take it.
See, I am going to wait at the fords of the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.”
While he was still talking with them, behold, the messenger came down to him and he said, “Behold, this evil is from the Lord; why should I wait for the Lord any longer?”
Then they said to one another, “We are not doing right. This day is a day of good news, but we are keeping silent; if we wait until morning light, punishment will overtake us. Now therefore come, let us go and tell the king’s household.”
Then take the flask of oil and pour it on his head and say, ‘Thus says the Lord, “I have anointed you king over Israel.”’ Then open the door and flee and do not wait.”
“Let the stars of its twilight be darkened;Let it wait for light but have none,And let it not see the breaking dawn;
“What is my strength, that I should wait?And what is my end, that I should endure?
“If a man dies, will he live again?All the days of my struggle I will waitUntil my change comes.
“Shall I wait, because they do not speak,Because they stop and no longer answer?
“How much less when you say you do not behold Him,The case is before Him, and you must wait for Him!
“Wait for me a little, and I will show youThat there is yet more to be said in God’s behalf.
When they crouch in their densAnd lie in wait in their lair?
Indeed, none of those who wait for You will be ashamed;Those who deal treacherously without cause will be ashamed.
Lead me in Your truth and teach me,For You are the God of my salvation;For You I wait all the day.
Let integrity and uprightness preserve me,For I wait for You.
Wait for the Lord;Be strong and let your heart take courage;Yes, wait for the Lord.
Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him;Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes.
For evildoers will be cut off,But those who wait for the Lord, they will inherit the land.
Wait for the Lord and keep His way,And He will exalt you to inherit the land;When the wicked are cut off, you will see it.
“And now, Lord, for what do I wait?My hope is in You.
I will give You thanks forever, because You have done it,And I will wait on Your name, for it is good, in the presence of Your godly ones.
My soul, wait in silence for God only,For my hope is from Him.
I am weary with my crying; my throat is parched;My eyes fail while I wait for my God.
May those who wait for You not be ashamed through me, O Lord God of hosts;May those who seek You not be dishonored through me, O God of Israel,
They all wait for YouTo give them their food in due season.
They quickly forgot His works;They did not wait for His counsel,
And do not take the word of truth utterly out of my mouth,For I wait for Your ordinances.
May those who fear You see me and be glad,Because I wait for Your word.
Kaph.My soul languishes for Your salvation;I wait for Your word.
The wicked wait for me to destroy me;I shall diligently consider Your testimonies.
You are my hiding place and my shield;I wait for Your word.
I rise before dawn and cry for help;I wait for Your words.
I wait for the Lord, my soul does wait,And in His word do I hope.
The Lord favors those who fear Him,Those who wait for His lovingkindness.
If they say, “Come with us,Let us lie in wait for blood,Let us ambush the innocent without cause;
But they lie in wait for their own blood;They ambush their own lives.
The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood,But the mouth of the upright will deliver them.
Do not say, “I will repay evil”;Wait for the Lord, and He will save you.
Do not lie in wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous;Do not destroy his resting place;
And I will wait for the Lord who is hiding His face from the house of Jacob; I will even look eagerly for Him.
Be delayed and wait,Blind yourselves and be blind;They become drunk, but not with wine,They stagger, but not with strong drink.
Yet those who wait for the LordWill gain new strength;They will mount up with wings like eagles,They will run and not get tired,They will walk and not become weary.
“He will not be disheartened or crushedUntil He has established justice in the earth;And the coastlands will wait expectantly for His law.”
“Kings will be your guardians,And their princesses your nurses.They will bow down to you with their faces to the earthAnd lick the dust of your feet;And you will know that I am the Lord;Those who hopefully wait for Me will not be put to shame.
“My righteousness is near, My salvation has gone forth,And My arms will judge the peoples;The coastlands will wait for Me,And for My arm they will wait expectantly.
“Surely the coastlands will wait for Me;And the ships of Tarshish will come first,To bring your sons from afar,Their silver and their gold with them,For the name of the Lord your God,And for the Holy One of Israel because He has glorified you.
‘For wicked men are found among My people,They watch like fowlers lying in wait;They set a trap,They catch men.
He is to me like a bear lying in wait,Like a lion in secret places.
The Lord is good to those who wait for Him,To the person who seeks Him.
And as raiders wait for a man,So a band of priests murder on the way to Shechem;Surely they have committed crime.
Therefore, return to your God,Observe kindness and justice,And wait for your God continually.
So I will be like a lion to them;Like a leopard I will lie in wait by the wayside.
Then the remnant of JacobWill be among many peoplesLike dew from the Lord,Like showers on vegetationWhich do not wait for manOr delay for the sons of men.
The godly person has perished from the land,And there is no upright person among men.All of them lie in wait for bloodshed;Each of them hunts the other with a net.
But as for me, I will watch expectantly for the Lord;I will wait for the God of my salvation.My God will hear me.
“For the vision is yet for the appointed time;It hastens toward the goal and it will not fail.Though it tarries, wait for it;For it will certainly come, it will not delay.
I heard and my inward parts trembled,At the sound my lips quivered.Decay enters my bones,And in my place I tremble.Because I must wait quietly for the day of distress,For the people to arise who will invade us.
“Therefore wait for Me,” declares the Lord,“For the day when I rise up as a witness.Indeed, My decision is to gather nations,To assemble kingdoms,To pour out on them My indignation,All My burning anger;For all the earth will be devouredBy the fire of My zeal.
Blessed are those slaves whom the master will find on the alert when he comes; truly I say to you, that he will gird himself to serve, and have them recline at the table, and will come up and wait on them.
Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me;
So do not listen to them, for more than forty of them are lying in wait for him who have bound themselves under a curse not to eat or drink until they slay him; and now they are ready and waiting for the promise from you.”
But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it.
Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men’s hearts; and then each man’s praise will come to him from God.
So then, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another.
For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ;
and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, that is Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath to come.
