'Violence' in the Bible

Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight, and the earth was filled with wickedness.

Then God said to Noah, “I have decided to put an end to every creature, for the earth is filled with wickedness because of them; therefore I am going to destroy them along with the earth.

my God, my mountain where I seek refuge.My shield, the horn of my salvation, my stronghold, my refuge,and my Savior, You save me from violence.

although my hands are free from violenceand my prayer is pure.

I cry out: “Violence!” but get no response;I call for help, but there is no justice.

Light is withheld from the wicked,and the arm raised in violence is broken.

His trouble comes back on his own head,and his violence falls on the top of his head.

Cursing, deceit, and violence fill his mouth;trouble and malice are under his tongue.

The Lord examines the righteous and the wicked.He hates the lover of violence.

Do not give me over to the will of my foes,for false witnesses rise up against me,breathing violence.

Lord, confuse and confound their speech,for I see violence and strife in the city;

No, you practice injustice in your hearts;with your hands you weigh out violence in the land.

He will redeem them from oppression and violence,for their lives are precious in his sight.

Therefore, pride is their necklace,and violence covers them like a garment.

Consider the covenant,for the dark places of the land are full of violence.

They eat the bread of wickednessand drink the wine of violence.

Blessings are on the head of the righteous,but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.

The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life,but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life,but violence takes lives.

From the words of his mouth,a man will enjoy good things,but treacherous people have an appetite for violence.

The violence of the wicked sweeps them awaybecause they refuse to act justly.

for their hearts plan violence,and their words stir up trouble.

The one who sends a message by a fool’s handcuts off his own feet and drinks violence.

They made His grave with the wickedand with a rich man at His death,although He had done no violenceand had not spoken deceitfully.

Violence will never again be heard of in your land;devastation and destructionwill be gone from your borders.But you will name your walls salvationand your gates, praise.

As a well gushes out its water,so she pours out her evil.Violence and destruction resound in her.Sickness and wounds keep coming to My attention.

For whenever I speak, I cry out,I proclaim, “Violence and destruction!”because the word of the Lord has become for meconstant disgrace and derision.

says the inhabitant of Zion;“Let the violence done to me and my family be done to Babylon.Let my blood be on the inhabitants of Chaldea,”says Jerusalem.

May you not become cowardly and fearfulwhen the report is proclaimed in the land,for the report will come one year,and then another the next year.There will be violence in the landwith ruler against ruler.

ו VavHe has done violence to His templeas if it were a garden booth,destroying His place of meeting.The Lord has abolishedappointed festivals and Sabbaths in Zion.He has despised king and priestin His fierce anger.

Violence has grown into a rod of wickedness.None of them will remain:none of their multitude,none of their wealth,and none of the eminent among them.

Forge the chain,for the land is filled with crimes of bloodshed,and the city is filled with violence.

And He said to me, “Do you see this, son of man? Is it not enough for the house of Judah to commit the detestable things they are practicing here, that they must also fill the land with violence and repeatedly provoke Me to anger, even putting the branch to their nose?

Then say to the people of the land: This is what the Lord God says about the residents of Jerusalem in the land of Israel: They will eat their bread with anxiety and drink their water in dread, for their land will be stripped of everything in it because of the violence of all who live there.

Her priests do violence to My instruction and profane My holy things. They make no distinction between the holy and the common, and they do not explain the difference between the clean and the unclean. They disregard My Sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.

Through the abundance of your trade,you were filled with violence, and you sinned.So I expelled you in disgracefrom the mountain of God,and banished you, guardian cherub,from among the fiery stones.

You have not strengthened the weak, healed the sick, bandaged the injured, brought back the strays, or sought the lost. Instead, you have ruled them with violence and cruelty.

“This is what the Lord God says: You have gone too far, princes of Israel! Put away violence and oppression and do what is just and right. Put an end to your evictions of My people.” This is the declaration of the Lord God.

Ephraim chases the windand pursues the east wind.He continually multiplies lies and violence.He makes a covenant with Assyria,and olive oil is carried to Egypt.

Egypt will become desolate,and Edom a desert wasteland,because of the violence done to the people of Judahin whose land they shed innocent blood.

For the wealthy of the city are full of violence,and its residents speak lies;the tongues in their mouths are deceitful.

How long, Lord, must I call for helpand You do not listenor cry out to You about violenceand You do not save?

Why do You force me to look at injustice?Why do You tolerate wrongdoing?Oppression and violence are right in front of me.Strife is ongoing, and conflict escalates.

All of them come to do violence;their faces are set in determination.They gather prisoners like sand.

Since you have plundered many nations,all the peoples who remain will plunder you—because of human bloodshedand violence against lands, cities,and all who live in them.

For your violence against Lebanonwill overwhelm you;the destruction of animals will terrify youbecause of your human bloodshed and violenceagainst lands, cities, and all who live in them.

On that day I will punishall who skip over the threshold,who fill their master’s housewith violence and deceit.

Her prophets are reckless—treacherous men.Her priests profane the sanctuary;they do violence to instruction.
