The Chief Priests And Elders Plot To Kill Jesus

1 And it happened when Jesus had finished all this teaching, He said to His disciples,

1 (A)When Jesus had finished all these words, He said to His disciples,

1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his disciples,

1 When Jesus had finished saying all this,(A) He told His disciples,

1 When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he told his disciples,

2 "You know that the Passover Festival will be celebrated in two more days [Note: This was the annual Jewish festival commemorating Israel's deliverance from Egyptian bondage under Moses' leadership], and the Son of man will be turned over to be crucified."

2 (B)You know that after two days (C)the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man is to be (D)handed over for crucifixion.”

2 Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified.

2 “You know(a) that the Passover takes place after two days, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.”(B)

2 "You know that the Passover will take place in two days, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified."

3 Then the leading priests and elders of the [Jewish] people were gathered in the courtroom of the head priest, named Caiaphas.

3 (E)Then the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together in (F)the court of the high priest, named (G)Caiaphas;

3 Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,

3 Then the chief priests(b) and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,(C)

3 Then the high priests and the elders of the people assembled in the courtyard of the high priest, who was named Caiaphas.

4 They were taking counsel together as to how they might take Jesus by trickery and kill Him.

4 and they (H)plotted together to seize Jesus by stealth and kill Him.

4 And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him.

4 and they conspired to arrest Jesus in a treacherous way and kill Him.(D)

4 They conspired to arrest Jesus by treachery and to kill him.

5 But they reasoned, "We will not do it during the Festival because it might start a riot among the people."

5 But they were saying, “Not during the festival, (I)otherwise a riot might occur among the people.”

5 But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people.

5 “Not during the festival,” they said, “so there won’t be rioting among the people.”

5 But they kept saying, "This must not happen during the festival. Otherwise, there'll be a riot among the people."

Jesus' Anointing At Bethany

6 Now when Jesus was at Bethany [Note: This was a small village less than two miles east of Jerusalem], in the house of Simon, the man [who probably had been healed] of an infectious skin disease,

6 (J)Now when Jesus was in (K)Bethany, at the home of Simon the leper,

6 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,

6 While Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon,(E) a man who had a serious skin disease,

6 While Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon the leper,

7 a woman with an alabaster [i.e., stone] jar of very expensive perfume came to Him and poured it on His head as He reclined at the dinner table. [Note: See Matt. 23:6]

7 (L)a woman came to Him with an alabaster vial of very costly perfume, and she poured it on His head as He reclined at the table.

7 There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat.

7 a woman approached Him with an alabaster jar of very expensive fragrant oil. She poured it on His head as He was reclining at the table.

7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume and poured it on his head while he sat at the table.

8 But when His disciples saw this they were very upset and said, "What is the reason for such waste?

8 But the disciples were indignant when they saw this, and said, “Why this waste?

8 But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste?

8 When the disciples(F) saw it, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked.

8 But when the disciples saw this, they became irritated and said, "Why this waste?

9 For this perfume could have been sold for a large sum of money and given to poor people."

9 For this perfume might have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor.”

9 For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.

9 “This might have been sold for a great deal and given to the poor.”

9 Surely this perfume could've been sold for a high price and the money given to the destitute."

10 But Jesus was aware [of what they were up to], so said, "Why are you bothering this woman? For she has done a kind deed to me.

10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you bother the woman? For she has done a good deed to Me.

10 When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me.

10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a noble thing for Me.

10 But knowing this, Jesus asked them, "Why are you bothering the woman? She has done a beautiful thing for me.

11 You will always have poor people with you, but you will not always have me.

11 For you always have (M)the poor with you; but you do not always have Me.

11 For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.

11 You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.(G)

11 You'll always have the destitute with you, but you'll not always have me.

12 For in the act of pouring this perfume on my body she was preparing it for my burial.

12 For when she poured this perfume on My body, she did it (N)to prepare Me for burial.

12 For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.

12 By pouring this fragrant oil on My body, she has prepared Me for burial.

12 When she poured this perfume on my body, she was preparing me for burial.

13 Truly I tell you, wherever this Gospel [message] is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done [for me] will [also] be told about, as a memorial of her [kindness to me]."

13 Truly I say to you, (O)wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her.”

13 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.

13 I assure you: Wherever this gospel(H) is proclaimed in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her.”

13 I tell all of you with certainty, wherever this gospel is proclaimed throughout the whole world, what she has done will also be told as a memorial to her."

Judas Arranges To Betray Jesus

14 Then one of the twelve apostles, named Judas Iscariot, went to the leading priests

14 (P)Then one of the twelve, named (Q)Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests

14 Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests,

14 Then(I) one of the Twelve—the man called Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests(J)

14 Then one of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the high priests

15 and said, "What would you give me if I turned Jesus over to you?" And they weighed out thirty silver coins [Note: This amount was equivalent to about five months of a farm laborer's wages, or approximately $7,000 in 1994], and promised [See Mark 14:11] to give him that much money.

15 and said, “What are you willing to give me (a)to (b)(R)betray Him to you?” And (S)they weighed out thirty (c)pieces of silver to him.

15 And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.

15 and said, “What are you willing to give me if I hand Him over to you?” So they weighed out 30 pieces of silver for him.(K)

15 and inquired, "What are you willing to give me if I betray Jesus to you?" They offered him 30 pieces of silver,

16 So, from then on Judas looked for a [good] opportunity to turn Jesus over [to the Jewish leaders].

16 From then on he began looking for a good opportunity to (d)betray (e)Jesus.

16 And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him.

16 And from that time he started looking for a good opportunity to betray Him.

16 and from then on he began to look for an opportunity to betray Jesus.

Jesus' Final Passover With The Disciples

17 Now on the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread [i.e., the first day of Passover week], His disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover meal?"

17 (T)Now on the first day of (U)Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?”

17 Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover?

17 On the first day of Unleavened Bread(L) the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do You want us to prepare the Passover so You may eat it?”

17 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples approached Jesus and asked, "Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover meal?"

18 He answered, "Go into the city [i.e., Jerusalem] to a certain man and say to him, 'The Teacher says, My time is near [i.e., to be turned over to the Jewish leaders]; I plan to observe the Passover Festival at your house with my disciples.'"

18 And He said, “Go into the city to (V)a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “(W)My time is near; I am to keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.”’”

18 And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.

18 “Go into the city to a certain man,” He said, “and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My time is near; I am celebrating the Passover at your place(c) with My disciples.’”(M)

18 He said, "Go to a certain man in the city and say to him, "The Teacher says, "My time is near. I will celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house."'"

19 And the disciples did [just] as Jesus had asked them, and they made preparations for the Passover meal.

19 The disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.

19 And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover.

19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.

19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover meal.

20 Now when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the dinner table with His twelve apostles.

20 (X)Now when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples.

20 Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve.

20 When evening came, He was reclining at the table with the Twelve.

20 When evening came, Jesus was sitting at the table with the Twelve.

Jesus Knows Who Will Betray Him

21 As they were eating, He said, "Truly I tell you, one of you will turn me over [to the Jewish leaders]."

21 As they were eating, He said, (Y)Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.”

21 And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

21 While they were eating, He said, “I assure you: One of you will betray Me.”(N)

21 While they were eating, he said, "I tell all of you with certainty, one of you is going to betray me."

22 And they were extremely grieved, and each one of them began saying to Him, "Am I the one, Lord?"

22 Being deeply grieved, they (f)each one began to say to Him, “Surely not I, Lord?”

22 And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?

22 Deeply distressed, each one began to say to Him, “Surely not I, Lord?”

22 Feeling deeply distressed, each one began to ask him, "Surely I am not the one, Lord?"

23 He answered, "The one who dipped his hand with me into the [sauce] bowl is the one who will turn me over [to the Jewish leaders].

23 And He answered, (Z)He who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me.

23 And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.

23 He replied, “The one who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl—he will betray Me.

23 He replied, "The man who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.

24 The Son of man is going [to die], but it is too bad for that person through whom the Son of man is turned over [to the Jewish leaders]! It would be better for that man if he had not been born."

24 The Son of Man is to go, (AA)just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! (AB)It would have been good (g)for that man if he had not been born.”

24 The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.

24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about Him,(O) but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”

24 The Son of Man is going away, just as it has been written about him. How terrible it will be for that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for him if he had never been born."

25 Then Judas, the one who betrayed Him asked, "Am I the one, Rabbi?" Jesus answered Him, "You have said so."

25 And (AC)Judas, who was betraying Him, said, “Surely it is not I, (AD)Rabbi?” Jesus *said to him, (AE)You have said it yourself.”

25 Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.

25 Then Judas, His betrayer, replied, “Surely not I, Rabbi?”(P)“You have said it,” He told him.

25 Then Judas, who was going to betray him, asked, "Rabbi, I'm not the one, am I?" Jesus told him, "You have said so."

The Lord's Supper

26 And as they were eating, Jesus took a [small] loaf of bread, asked God's blessing on it, then broke it and gave pieces to His disciples and said, "Take some and eat it; this is [i.e., represents] my [physical] body."

26 (AF)While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and (h)(AG)after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”

26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.

26 As they were eating,(Q) Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, gave it to the disciples,(R) and said, “Take and eat it; this is My body.”(S)

26 While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and handed it to the disciples, saying, "Take this and eat it. This is my body."

27 And He took a cup [i.e., probably wine made from fresh or possibly preserved grape juice], gave thanks to God, then passed it to them, saying, "All of you, drink from it;

27 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you;

27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;

27 Then He took a cup, and after giving thanks, He gave it to them and said, “Drink from it, all of you.

27 Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you,

28 for this is [i.e., represents] my blood of the Agreement [i.e., between God and mankind], which is [to be] poured out for many people in order for [their] sins to be forgiven.

28 for (AH)this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for (AI)many for forgiveness of sins.

28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

28 For this is My blood that establishes the covenant;(d) it is shed for many for the forgiveness of sins.(T)

28 because this is my blood of the new covenant that is being poured out for many people for the forgiveness of sins.

29 But I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine [i.e., grape juice] from now on until that day when I will drink it again with you [i.e., figuratively] in my Father's kingdom."

29 But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”

29 But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.

29 But I tell you, from this moment I will not drink of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it in a new way(e) in My Father’s kingdom(U) with you.”

29 I tell all of you I will never again drink the product of the vine until that day when I drink it with you once again in my Father's kingdom."

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

30 And after they had sung a hymn, they went up to the Mount of Olives. [Note: This was a small hill just east of Jerusalem]

30 (AJ)After singing a hymn, they went out to (AK)the Mount of Olives.

30 And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.

30 After singing psalms,(f) they went out to the Mount of Olives.(V)

30 After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial

31 Then Jesus said [to His disciples], "All of you will have doubts about me tonight, for it is written [Zech. 13:7], 'I will strike down the shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered everywhere.'

31 Then Jesus *said to them, “You will all (i)(AL)fall away because of Me this night, for it is written, ‘(AM)I will strike down the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be (AN)scattered.’

31 Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.

31 Then Jesus said to them, “Tonight all of you will run away(g) because of Me, for it is written:I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.(W)(h)

31 Then Jesus told them, "All of you will turn against me this very night, because it is written, "I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'

32 But after I am raised up, I will go on ahead of you to Galilee."

32 But after I have been raised, (AO)I will go ahead of you to Galilee.”

32 But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.

32 But after I have been resurrected, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.”(X)

32 However, after I have been raised, I will go to Galilee ahead of you."

33 Peter answered Him, "[Even] if everyone [else] has doubts about you, I never will."

33 But Peter said to Him, “Even though all may (j)fall away because of You, I will never fall away.”

33 Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended.

33 Peter told Him, “Even if everyone runs away because of You, I will never run away!”

33 But Peter told him, "Even if everyone else turns against you, I certainly won't!"

34 Jesus said to him, "Truly I tell you, this [very] night, before the rooster crows, you will deny [knowing] me three times."

34 Jesus said to him, (AP)Truly I say to you that (AQ)this very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”

34 Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.

34 “I assure you,” Jesus said to him, “tonight, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times!”(Y)

34 Jesus told him, "I tell you with certainty, before a rooster crows this very night, you will deny me three times."

35 Peter replied to Him, "Even if I have to die with you, still I will not deny [knowing] you." And all [the rest of] the disciples said the same thing.

35 Peter *said to Him, “(AR)Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You.” All the disciples said the same thing too.

35 Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.

35 “Even if I have to die with You,” Peter told Him, “I will never deny You!” And all the disciples said the same thing.

35 Peter told him, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!" And all the disciples said the same thing.

The Prayer In Gethsemane

36 Then Jesus came with His disciples to a place called Gethsemene. [Note: This was an olive orchard on a hillside just east of Jerusalem]. He said to them, "You sit here while I go over there and pray."

36 (AS)Then Jesus *came with them to a place called (AT)Gethsemane, and *said to His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”

36 Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.

36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane,(i)(Z) and He told the disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”

36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane. He told the disciples, "Sit down here while I go over there and pray."

37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee [i.e., James and John] with Him, and [soon] began to be grieved and very distressed.

37 And He took with Him (AU)Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and distressed.

37 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.

37 Taking along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed.(AA)

37 Taking Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him, he began to be grieved and troubled.

38 Then He said to them, "My soul is extremely grieved, even to [the point where I could] die. Stay here and be alert with me [i.e., in prayer]."

38 Then He *said to them, (AV)My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and (AW)keep watch with Me.”

38 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.

38 Then He said to them, “My soul is swallowed up in sorrow(j) —to the point of death.(k) Remain here and stay awake with Me.”(AB)

38 Then he told them, "I'm so deeply grieved that I feel I'm about to die. Wait here and stay awake with me."

39 And He went on ahead a short distance and fell face-down and prayed, "My Father, allow this cup [i.e., of suffering] to pass away from me if it is [at all] possible; nevertheless, let it not be what I want, but what You want [for me]."

39 And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let (AX)this cup pass from Me; (AY)yet not as I will, but as You will.”

39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

39 Going a little farther,(l) He fell facedown and prayed, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will.”(AC)

39 Going on a little farther, he fell on his face and prayed, "O my Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Yet not what I want but what you want."

40 And [when] He came [back] to where His disciples were and found them asleep, He said to Peter, "What [is this], could you not remain alert with me [in prayer] for one hour?

40 And He *came to the disciples and *found them sleeping, and *said to Peter, “So, you men could not (AZ)keep watch with Me for one hour?

40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?

40 Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping. He asked Peter, “So, couldn’t you(m) stay awake with Me one hour?

40 When he went back to the disciples, he found them asleep. He told Peter, "So, you men couldn't stay awake with me for one hour, could you?

41 Be alert and pray, so that you do not give in to temptation; the spirit [of a person] is truly willing [i.e., to do a certain thing], but his physical nature is [often too] weak [to carry it out]."

41 (BA)Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; (BB)the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

41 Stay awake and pray, so that you won’t enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

41 All of you must stay awake and pray that you won't be tempted. The spirit is indeed willing, but the body is weak."

42 He [then] went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if this [cup of suffering] cannot pass away unless I drink it [i.e., experience the suffering], [then] let what You want be done."

42 He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this (BC)cannot pass away unless I drink it, (BD)Your will be done.”

42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.

42 Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, “My Father, if this(n) cannot pass(o) unless I drink it, Your will be done.”(AD)

42 He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if this cup cannot go away unless I drink it, let your will be done."

43 And He came [back] again and found them asleep, because they had not been able to keep their eyes open.

43 Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.

43 And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy.

43 And He came again and found them sleeping, because they could not keep their eyes open.(p)

43 Then he came back and found them asleep, because they could not keep their eyes open.

44 He left and went away from them again and prayed a third time, saying the same words again.

44 And He left them again, and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more.

44 And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.

44 After leaving them, He went away again and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more.

44 After leaving them again, he went away and prayed again for the third time, saying the same thing.

45 Then He came to His disciples and said to them, "Go ahead and sleep now, and get your rest. See, the time is near and the Son of man is [about to be] turned over into the hands of sinners.

45 Then He *came to the disciples and *said to them, (k)Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, (BE)the hour is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.

45 Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

45 Then He came to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting?(q) Look, the time is near. The Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.(AE)

45 Then he came back to the disciples and told them, "You might as well keep on sleeping and resting. Look! The time is near for the Son of Man to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.

46 Get up, let us be going. Look, the one who will turn me over [to the Jewish leaders] is nearby."

46 Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!”

46 Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.

46 Get up; let’s go! See, My betrayer is near.”

46 Get up! Let's go! See, the one who is betraying me is near!"

The Betrayal And Arrest Of Jesus

47 And while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve apostles, came with a large crowd who were carrying swords and clubs. They had come from the leading priests and elders of the [Jewish] people.

47 (BF)While He was still speaking, behold, (BG)Judas, one of the twelve, came up (l)accompanied by a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people.

47 And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.

47 While He was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, suddenly arrived.(AF) A large mob, with swords and clubs, was with him from the chief priests and elders of the people.

47 Just then, while Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. A large crowd armed with swords and clubs was with him. They were from the high priests and elders of the people.

48 Now the one who betrayed Him had given them a signal, saying, "Whoever I give a kiss [of greeting to], he is the one, take hold of him."

48 Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him.”

48 Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast.

48 His betrayer had given them a sign: “The One I kiss, He’s the One; arrest Him!”

48 Now the betrayer personally had given them a signal, saying, "The one I kiss is the man. Arrest him."

49 So, immediately he went to Jesus and said, "Greetings, Rabbi," and [then] kissed Him [enthusiastically].

49 Immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, “Hail, (BH)Rabbi!” and kissed Him.

49 And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.

49 So he went right up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.

49 So Judas immediately went up to Jesus and said, "Hello, Rabbi!" and kissed him tenderly.

50 And Jesus said to him, "[My] friend, [go ahead], do what you came to do." Then the Jewish officers came and arrested Jesus and began taking Him away.

50 And Jesus said to him, (BI)Friend, do what you have come for.” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him.

50 And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.

50 “Friend,”(AG) Jesus asked him, “why have you come?”(r)Then they came up, took hold of Jesus, and arrested Him.

50 Jesus asked him, "Friend, why are you here?" Then the other men surged forward, took hold of Jesus, and arrested him.

51 Just then, one of those who were with Jesus [i.e., Peter. See John 18:10], reached out with his sword and struck the head priest's servant [with it], shearing off his ear.

51 And behold, (BJ)one of those who were with Jesus (m)reached and drew out his (BK)sword, and struck the (BL)slave of the high priest and (n)cut off his ear.

51 And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear.

51 At that moment one of those with Jesus reached out his hand and drew his sword. He struck the high priest’s slave and cut off his ear.(AH)

51 Suddenly, one of the men with Jesus reached out his hand, drew his sword, and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his ear.

52 Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back in your belt again, for all those who use the sword will die by the sword.

52 Then Jesus *said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for (BM)all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword.

52 Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.

52 Then Jesus told him, “Put your sword back in its place because all who take up a sword will perish by a sword.(AI)

52 Jesus told him, "Put your sword back in its place! Everyone who uses a sword will be killed by a sword.

53 Or, do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father and He will immediately send me more than twelve legions of angels [i.e., Jesus could have called about 72,000 angels to minister to Him. See Matt. 4:11]?

53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve (o)(BN)legions of (BO)angels?

53 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?

53 Or do you think that I cannot call on My Father, and He will provide Me at once with more than 12 legions(s) of angels?(AJ)

53 Don't you think that I could call on my Father, and he would send me more than twelve legions of angels now?

54 How [else] then should the Scriptures be fulfilled that this must happen [than what is taking place]?"

54 How then will (BP)the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?”

54 But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?

54 How, then, would the Scriptures be fulfilled(AK) that say it must happen this way?”

54 How, then, would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say this must happen?"

55 [Then] Jesus said to the crowds at that very time, "Have you come out to arrest me with swords and clubs as [you would apprehend] a thief? I sat everyday teaching in the Temple, and you did not [come to] take me.

55 At that time Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? (BQ)Every day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me.

55 In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me.

55 At that time Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs, as if I were a criminal,(t) to capture Me? Every day I used to sit, teaching in the temple complex, and you didn’t arrest Me.(AL)

55 At this point, Jesus asked the crowds, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as if I were a bandit? Day after day I sat teaching in the Temple, yet you didn't arrest me.

56 But all this has happened so that the Scriptures of the prophets would be fulfilled." Then all of His disciples left Him and ran away.

56 But all this has taken place to fulfill (BR)the Scriptures of the prophets.” Then all the disciples left Him and fled.

56 But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.

56 But all this has happened so that the prophetic Scriptures(u)(AM) would be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples(AN) deserted Him and ran away.

56 But all of this has happened so that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples deserted Jesus and ran away.

Jesus Before The Sanhedrin

57 And those who had arrested Jesus led Him away to the house of Caiaphas, the head priest, where the experts in the law of Moses and the [Jewish] elders were gathered.

57 (BS)Those who had seized Jesus led Him away to (BT)Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together.

57 And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.

57 Those(AO) who had arrested Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas(AP) the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had convened.

57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had assembled.

58 But Peter followed Him from a distance [as they were going] to the courtyard of the head priest. He went inside [i.e., eventually. See John 18:15-16] and sat down with the [Jewish] officers to see how things would turn out [i.e., with Jesus' trial].

58 But (BU)Peter was following Him at a distance as far as the (BV)courtyard of the high priest, and entered in, and sat down with the (p)(BW)officers to see the outcome.

58 But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end.

58 Meanwhile, Peter was following Him at a distance right to the high priest’s courtyard.(v) He went in and was sitting with the temple police(w) to see the outcome.(x)(AQ)

58 Peter, however, followed him at a distance as far as the high priest's courtyard. He went inside and sat down with the servants to see how this would end.

59 Now the leading priests and the entire Council [called "the Sanhedrin"] looked for false witnesses [to testify] against Jesus, in order to put Him to death.

59 Now the chief priests and the whole (q)(BX)Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death.

59 Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death;

59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false testimony against Jesus so they could put Him to death.(AR)

59 Meanwhile, the high priests and the whole Council were looking for false testimony against Jesus in order to have him put to death.

60 But they did not find any [i.e., whose stories harmonized. See Mark 14:56], even though many false witnesses came [forward to testify]. Finally, two [false witnesses] came forward

60 They did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on (BY)two came forward,

60 But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses,

60 But they could not find any, even though many false witnesses(AS) came forward.(y) Finally, two(z) who came forward

60 But they couldn't find any, even though many false witnesses had come forward. At last two men came forward

61 and said, "This man [i.e., Jesus] said, 'I can destroy the Temple of God, and [then] rebuild it within three days.'"

61 and said, “This man stated, ‘(BZ)I am able to destroy the (r)temple of God and to rebuild it (s)in three days.’”

61 And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.

61 stated, “This man said, ‘I can demolish God’s sanctuary(AT) and rebuild it in three days.’”

61 and stated, "This man said, "I can destroy the sanctuary of God and rebuild it in three days.'"

62 The head priest stood up and said to Him, "Have you nothing to answer? What about this charge being made against you by these people?"

62 The high priest stood up and said to Him, “Do You not answer? What is it that these men are testifying against You?”

62 And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?

62 The high priest then stood up and said to Him, “Don’t You have an answer to what these men are testifying against You?”

62 At this, the high priest stood up and asked Jesus, "Don't you have any answer to what these men are testifying against you?"

63 But Jesus did not say anything. So, the head priest said to Him, "I command you [to swear] by the living God, [and] to tell us if you are the Christ [i.e., God's specially chosen one], the Son of God!"

63 But (CA)Jesus kept silent. (CB)And the high priest said to Him, “I (t)(CC)adjure You by (CD)the living God, that You tell us whether You are (u)the Christ, (CE)the Son of God.”

63 But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.

63 But(AU) Jesus kept silent.(AV) Then the high priest said to Him, “By the living God I place You under oath:(AW) tell us if You are the Messiah, the Son of God!”(AX)

63 But Jesus was silent. Then the high priest told him, "I command you by the living God to tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God!"

64 Jesus replied to him, "You have said so; nevertheless I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of man sitting at the right side of Power [i.e., God Himself], and coming on the clouds of the sky."

64 Jesus *said to him, (CF)You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, (v)hereafter you will see (CG)the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and (CH)coming on the clouds of heaven.”

64 Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

64 “You have said it,”(aa) Jesus told him. “But I tell you, in the future(ab) you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(AY)(ac)

64 Jesus told him, "You have said so. Nevertheless I tell you, from now on you will see "the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power' and "coming on the clouds of heaven.'"

65 Then the head priest tore at his clothing [i.e., as an expression of frustration], saying, "He has spoken against God [i.e., by claiming Deity for Himself]. What additional need do we have for witnesses? Look, you [yourselves] have now heard him speaking against God.

65 Then the high priest (CI)tore his (w)robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy;

65 Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.

65 Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed!(AZ) Why do we still need witnesses? Look, now you’ve heard the blasphemy!(BA)

65 Then the high priest tore his robes and said, "He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? Listen! You yourselves have just heard the blasphemy!

66 What do you people think [i.e., about such statements]?" They answered, "He deserves to die."

66 what do you think?” They answered, “(CJ)He deserves death!”

66 What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death.

66 What is your decision?”(ad)They answered, “He deserves death!”(BB)

66 What is your verdict?" They replied, "He deserves to die!"

67 Then they spit in His face and hit Him [with their fists], while others slapped Him [in the face],

67 (CK)Then they (CL)spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others (x)slapped Him,

67 Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands,

67 Then they spit in His face(BC) and beat Him; others slapped Him

67 Then they spit in his face and hit him. Some slapped him,

68 saying, "Prophesy to us, you 'Christ.' Tell us who hit you?" [Note: By this time Jesus had been blindfolded. See Mark 14:65].

68 and said, “(CM)Prophesy to us, You (y)Christ; who is the one who hit You?”

68 Saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ, Who is he that smote thee?

68 and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah! Who hit You?”(BD)

68 saying, "Prophesy to us, you Messiah! Who hit you?"

Peter Denies Jesus Three Times

69 Now Peter was sitting outside in a courtyard and a servant-girl approached him and said, "You also were with Jesus, the Galilean."

69 (CN)Now Peter was sitting outside in the (CO)courtyard, and a servant-girl came to him and said, “You too were with Jesus the Galilean.”

69 Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee.

69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard.(BE) A servant approached him and she said, “You were with Jesus the Galilean too.”

69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard when a servant girl came up to him and said, "You, too, were with Jesus the Galilean."

70 But he denied [it] in front of all of them, saying, "I do not know what you are talking about."

70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about.”

70 But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest.

70 But he denied it in front of everyone: “I don’t know what you’re talking about!”

70 But he denied it in front of them all. "I don't know what you're talking about!" he exclaimed.

71 And when he had gone out by the gate, another servant-girl saw him and said to those nearby, "This man also was with Jesus of Nazareth."

71 When he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and *said to those who were there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.”

71 And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth.

71 When he had gone out to the gateway, another woman saw him and told those who were there, “This man was with Jesus the Nazarene!”(BF)

71 As he went out to the gateway, another woman saw him and told those who were there, "This man was with Jesus from Nazareth."

72 And he denied [it] again, [this time] with an oath, saying, "I do not [even] know the man."

72 And again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man.”

72 And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man.

72 And again he denied it with an oath,(BG) “I don’t know the man!”

72 Again he denied it and swore with an oath, "I don't know the man!"

73 And a little later, those standing nearby came to Peter and said, "[We know] for sure, you also are one of them [i.e., Jesus' disciples], because your accent gives you away."

73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Surely you too are one of them; (CP)for even the way you talk (z)gives you away.”

73 And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech bewrayeth thee.

73 After a little while those standing there approached and said to Peter, “You certainly are one of them, since even your accent(ae) gives you away.”

73 After a little while, the people who were standing there came up and told Peter, "Obviously you're also one of them, because your accent gives you away."

74 Then Peter began to curse and swear, "[I tell you], I do not know the man." And immediately a rooster crowed.

74 Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed.

74 Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew.

74 Then he started to curse(af) and to swear with an oath, “I do not know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed,

74 Then he began to curse violently. "I don't know the man!" he swore solemnly. Just then a rooster crowed.

75 Then Peter remembered the words Jesus had said, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny [knowing] me three times." And he went out and cried bitterly.

75 And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, (CQ)Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.

75 and Peter remembered the words Jesus had spoken, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”(BH) And he went outside and wept bitterly.

75 Peter remembered the words of Jesus when he said, "Before a rooster crows, you'll deny me three times." Then he went outside and cried bitterly.
