And when, after eight days, the time came for his circumcision, he was named Jesus, the name which the angel had given to him before his birth.
Now when the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, Joseph and Mary brought Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord
And full of the Spirit he came into the Temple; and when the father and mother came in with the child Jesus, to do with him what was ordered by the law,
Joseph and the mother of Jesus were surprized to hear such things pronounc'd concerning him.
Then Simeon [asked God to] bless them and said to Jesus' mother Mary, "Look, many Israelites will be caused to fall [i.e., into spiritual ruin] or rise [i.e., to spiritual renewal] because of Him. And [He will be] a 'sign' [for people] to speak against,
and happening to come in just at the same time, she likewise express'd her thanks to the lord, and spoke of Jesus to all those, who expected deliverance in Jerusalem.
And the child [i.e., Jesus] grew and became strong. He was filled with wisdom and God's favor was upon Him.
Now Jesus' parents went to Jerusalem every year for the feast of the Passover.
when Jesus therefore was twelve years old they went thither, as was customary at the time of that festival.
And when the days of the feast came to an end and they were going back, the boy Jesus was still in Jerusalem, but they had no knowledge of it:
And all who heard Jesus were astonished at his understanding and his answers.
When Jesus' parents saw him, they were shocked. His mother asked him, "Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been worried sick looking for you!"
Jesus replied, why were ye so sollicitous about me? don't you know that 'tis my business to be in my father's house?
However Jesus went down with them to Nazareth, and was subject to them: and his mother kept all these things in her heart.
And Jesus was increasing in wisdom and in years, and in grace before God and men.
Now it came about that when all the people had been given baptism, Jesus, having had baptism with them, was in prayer, when, the heaven being open,
And Jesus at this time was about thirty years old, being the son (as it seemed) of Joseph, the son of Heli,
The son of Jesus, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi,
And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, came back from the Jordan, and was guided by the Spirit in the waste land
And Jesus made answer to him, It has been said in the Writings, Bread is not man's only need.
And the Devil led Jesus up, and showing him in a single moment all the kingdoms of the earth, said to him:
He told Jesus, "I will give you all this authority, along with their glory, because it has been given to me, and I give it to anyone I please.
And Jesus in answer said to him, It has been said in the Writings, Give worship to the Lord your God, and be his servant only.
Then the devil led Jesus to Jerusalem and placed Him on the elevated wing of the Temple and said to Him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here,
And Jesus made answer and said to him, It is said in the Writings, You may not put the Lord your God to the test.
And when the devil had finished every test, he left Jesus until a [later] time.
And Jesus came back to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and the news of him went through all the country round about.
Now Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read,
The book given him was that of the Prophet Isaiah; and Jesus opened the book and found the place where it says--
And Jesus began: "This very day this passage has been fulfilled in your hearing."
Jesus said to them, "No doubt you will quote to me the proverb, 'Physician, heal yourself!' and say, 'What we have heard that you did in Capernaum, do here in your hometown too.'"
They rose up and threw Jesus out of the city, leading Him to the top of the hill on which the city was built, in order to throw Him down [from a cliff].
Then Jesus went down to Capernaum, a city in Galilee. On the Sabbath he taught the people.
Let us be! what have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? have you come to put an end to us? I have knowledge who you are, the Holy One of God.
And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst, he came out of him, having done him no hurt.
And rumors about Jesus traveled through every place in the neighborhood.
When Jesus came out of the synagogue, he went to Simon's house, whose mother-in-law was seized with a violent fever, and they desired him to relieve her.
As the sun was setting, all those who had any relatives sick with various diseases brought them to Jesus. He placed his hands on every one of them and healed them.
And evil spirits also came out of many people, shouting [at Him], "You are the Son of God." And Jesus spoke sternly to them and would not allow them to speak [anymore] because they knew He was the Christ [Note: Jesus would not accept the endorsement of these Satanic spirits].
The next morning Jesus departed and went to a deserted place. Yet the crowds were seeking him, and they came to him and tried to keep him from leaving them.
But Jesus said to them, "I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns too, for that is what I was sent to do."
As the crowd was pressing in on Jesus to hear God’s word,
He got into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then Jesus sat down and taught the crowds from the boat.
But Simon Peter, when he saw it, fell down at Jesus knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.
and so were also James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.
And when they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed Jesus.
And it came to pass, while he was in one of the cities, behold, a man full of leprosy: and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
then Jesus stretch'd out his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou cured. and immediately the leprosy disappear'd:
And instantly the leprosy left him. Jesus ordered him to tell no one, "But be off," he said, "show yourself to the priest, and make the offering for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, for a testimony to them."
But the news about what Jesus had done spread all the more widely, so that large crowds assembled to listen to Him and to be healed of their sicknesses.
But Jesus Himself continued His habit of retiring to lonely spots and praying.
On one of those days, when Jesus was teaching, some Pharisees and Doctors of the Law were sitting near by. (They had come from all the villages in Galilee and Judea, and from Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was upon Jesus, so that he could work cures.)
And some men had with them, on a bed, a man who was ill, without power of moving; and they made attempts to get him in and put him before Jesus.
And not finding by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went up to the housetop, and let him down through the tiles with his couch into the midst before Jesus.
When Jesus saw their faith he said, "Friend, your sins are forgiven."
But Jesus perceiving their reasonings, answered and said unto them, Why reason ye in your hearts?
After this Jesus left the place, and seeing a publican named Levi, sitting at the custom-house, he said to him, follow me.
So, Matthew gave up everything, got up and followed Jesus.
Then Levi gave a great banquet in his house for Jesus, and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others sitting at the table with them.
Now the Pharisees and their experts in the law of Moses complained to Jesus' disciples, saying, "Why do you men eat and drink with tax collectors and worldly people?"
And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are in health have no need of a physician; but they that are sick.
Then they said to Jesus, "John [the Immerser's] disciples fast frequently [i.e., going without food and/or drink for religious reasons] and they offer earnest prayer requests, and the disciples of the Pharisees do the same things. But your disciples eat and drink."
And Jesus said unto them, Can ye make the sons of the bride-chamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them?
But the time will come when the groom will be taken away from them [Note: Jesus here refers to Himself]. Then they will fast at that time."
Then, as an illustration, Jesus said to them: "No man ever tears a piece from a new garment and puts it upon an old one; for, if he does, he will not only tear the new garment, but the piece from the new one will not match the old.
On the second-prime sabbath, as Jesus was passing through the corn-fields, his disciples happen'd to pluck the ears, and rubbing out the corn with their hands began to eat.
And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read even this, what David did, when he was hungry, he, and they that were with him;
Then Jesus added: "The Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath."
On another Sabbath, Jesus entered the synagogue and was teaching. Now a man was there whose right hand was withered.
The experts in the law and the Pharisees watched Jesus closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they could find a reason to accuse him.
But Jesus knew what they were thinking. So he told the man with the paralyzed hand, "Get up, and stand in the middle of the synagogue." So he got up and stood there.
And Jesus said unto them, I ask you, Is it lawful on the sabbath to do good, or to do harm? to save a life, or to destroy it?
But they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.
About that time, Jesus retired to a mountain to pray, and spent the whole night in an oratory.
They were Simon (whom Jesus also named Peter), and his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,
Judas, the son of James [i.e., the same as Thaddaeus. See Matt. 10:3] and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor [to Jesus].

Then Jesus looked at his disciples and said, "How blessed are you who are destitute, because the kingdom of God is yours!
Then Jesus told them a parable [i.e., a brief story to illustrate His teaching]: "Can a blind person lead a blind person? Will not both of them fall into a ditch?
After Jesus had finished teaching all this to the people, he entered Capernaum.
And when he heard concerning Jesus, he sent unto him elders of the Jews, asking him that he would come and save his servant.
And they, when they came to Jesus, besought him earnestly, saying, He is worthy that thou shouldest do this for him;
And Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself; for I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof:
And when Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned and said unto the multitude that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
Soon afterward Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went with him.
And when Jesus saw her, he was moved with compassion for her, and said unto her, Weep not.
Then He went near the casket and touched it; [immediately] the pallbearers stopped. Jesus said, "Young man, I tell you, get up."
Then the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
This report about Jesus circulated throughout Judea and all the surrounding country.
Then the disciples of John [the Immerser] told him all about these things [i.e., what Jesus was doing].
and John, having called two of his disciples, sent to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that is coming, or are we to wait for another?
accordingly they came to Jesus, and said, John the Baptist sent us to enquire, if you are he that was to come, or must we look for another?
At that time Jesus healed many people of diseases,
And Jesus answering said to them, Go, bring back word to John of what ye have seen and heard: that blind see, lame walk, lepers are cleansed, deaf hear, dead are raised, poor are evangelized;

And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretching out his hand, drew his sword, and striking at a servant of the high-priest, cut off his ear. Then saith Jesus unto him, Return thy sword into its sheath: for all who take the sword, shall perish by the sword. Thinkest thou, that I cannot now entreat my Father, and he will give me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then would the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be? In that hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a robber, with swords and staves to apprehend me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid not hold upon me. But all this is come to pass, that the scriptures of the prophets should be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled. Then they who had apprehended Jesus, brought him to Caiaphas the high-priest, where the scribes and elders were assembled. But Peter followed him at a great distance unto the palace of the high-priest, and entering in, sat down with the servants, to see the issue. Now the chief priests and elders and the whole sanhedrim, sought false witness against Jesus, that they might put him to death; and found none: and though many false witnesses came, they found it not [sufficient]. But at the last two false witnesses stepping forth, said, This fellow said, I am able to pull down the temple of God, and to build it up in three days. And the high-priest rising up, said to him, Answerest thou nothing? what do these men witness against thee? But Jesus was silent. And the high-priest addressing him, said, I adjure thee, by the living God, that thou tell us, if thou art the Messiah, the Son of God. Jesus saith to him, Thou hast spoken [the fact]. Moreover I tell you, hereafter ye shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Then the high-priest rent his garments, saying, he hath blasphemed: what farther need have we of witnesses? lo! now ye have heard his blasphemy: what think ye? They answered and said, He is deserving of death. Then they spit in his face, and buffeted him about; and some slapt his face with their hands, saying, Prophesy to us, you Messiah, who it is that struck thee! Now Peter sat without in the hall: and there came to him a single maid-servant, saying, Thou also wert with Jesus of Galilee. But he denied it before them all, asserting, I know not what thou art saying. Then as he was going out at the gate, another maid-servant saw him, and saith to those who were there, This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth. Then again he denied with an oath, I know not the man. But after a little while they who stood by, came up and said to Peter, Assuredly thou also art one of them: for even thy speech maketh thee manifest. Then began he to utter the bitterest curses, and to swear, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew. And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, who had said unto him, Before the cock shall crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And going out, he wept bitterly.
Then they laid their hands on him, and seized him. And one particular person of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. And Jesus addressing them said, Are ye come out as against a robber, with swords and staves, to apprehend me? Daily was I with you in the temple teaching, and ye laid no hold upon me: but [this is done] that the scriptures might be fulfilled. Then they all deserting him, fled. And a certain youth followed him, having a linen cloth wrapped round his naked body; and the young men laid hold of him; and leaving the linen cloth behind, he fled naked from them. And they led Jesus unto the high-priest; and with him were assembled all the chief priests, and the elders, and the scribes. And Peter followed him at a distance, until he came into the palace of the high-priest: and was seated with the servants, and warming himself at the fire. Then the chief priests, and the whole sanhedrim, sought for witness against Jesus, that they might put him to death; yet found none. For many bore false witness against him, and their attestations did not correspond. And certain persons rising up, bore false witness against him, saying, We have heard him affirm, I will destroy this temple made with hands, and after three days I will build another not made with hands. But even then their testimony was not correspondent. So the high-priest rising up in the midst interrogated Jesus, Answerest thou nothing? What is it that these witness against thee? But he kept silence, and made them not a word of reply. Again the high-priest questioned him, and said to him, Art thou the Messiah, the Son of the blessed? Then said Jesus, I am. And ye shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of power, and coming with the clouds of heaven. Then the high-priest rent his clothes, and said, What farther need have we of witnesses? Ye have heard his blasphemy. What think ye? And they all adjudged him to be deserving of death. And some began to spit upon him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say to him, Prophesy: and the servants slapped him on the face with their hands. And as Peter was in the hall, at the lower end, there came to him one of the high-priest's maid-servants: and seeing Peter warming himself, stedfastly looking at him, she said, Thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth. Then he denied it, saying, I do not so much as know him, nor understand what thou art saying. And he went out into the vestibule; and the cock crew. And a maid-servant observing him again; began to say to those who stood by, This man is one of them. Then he denied it again. And after a little while, they who stood by said to Peter, Of a certainty thou art one of them; for thou art a Galilean, and thy speech is correspondent. Then began he to make the most dreadful imprecations, and to swear, I know not the man of whom ye speak. And the second time the cock crew. And Peter remembered the word which Jesus spake unto him, That before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And casting his mantle over his face, he wept.
And one of them struck at a servant of the high-priest, and cut off his right ear. Then Jesus, addressing them, said, Permit me thus far: and touching his ear, he healed him. Then said Jesus to the chief priests and captains of the temple, and to the elders who were come forth against him, Are ye come out as against a robber, with swords and staves? When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched out no hands upon me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness. Then seizing upon him, they led him away, and brought him into the palace of the high-priest. But Peter followed at a distance. And as they had lighted a fire in the middle of the hall, and had seated themselves in a company, Peter sat down in the midst of them. But a certain maid-servant who sat at the fire, eyeing him, and looking at him stedfastly, said, This man was also with him. But he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not. And after a little while another seeing him, said, Surely thou art one of them. Then said Peter, Man, I am not. And at about an hour's distance, another person strongly asserted, saying, Of a certainty this fellow was also with him: for he too is a Galilean. And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And instantly, while he was yet speaking, the cock crew. And the Lord, turning round, looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, That before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And Peter going without, wept bitterly. And the men who held Jesus insulted him, beating him with rods; and blindfolding him, smote him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is he that struck thee? And many other things, blaspheming, spake they against him. And when the day broke, the elders of the people and the chief priests and scribes assembled, and brought him into their sanhedrim, saying, If thou art the Messiah, tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe: and if I shall ask you any question, ye will neither answer me, nor let me go free. Hereafter shall the Son of man sit at the right hand of the power of God. Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Yourselves say that I am. Then they said, What further need have we of witness? for we have heard it from his own mouth.
As he then spake to them, I am he, they retreated backward, and fell flat on the ground. Again therefore he demanded of them, Whom seek ye? Then they said, Jesus the Nazarean. Jesus answered, I told you that I am he: if therefore ye are seeking me, permit these to go away: that the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, That of those whom thou hast given me, I have not lost one of them. Then Simon Peter having a sword, drew it, and struck a servant of the high-priest, and cut off his right ear. Now the servant's name was Malchas. Then said Jesus to Peter, Put up thy sword into the scabbard: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it? The band therefore, and the chief captain, and the inferior officers of the Jews, seized on Jesus, and bound him, and led him away to Annas first; for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was the high-priest of that year. Now Caiaphas was the person who had given his advice to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should be destroyed instead of the people. Now Simon Peter had followed Jesus, and another disciple: and that disciple was acquainted with the high-priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high-priest. But Peter stood without at the door. Then that other disciple, who was acquainted with the high-priest, went out, and spoke to the porteress, and introduced Peter. Then said the damsel who kept the door to Peter, Art not thou also one of the disciples of this man? He saith, I am not. Now the servants and inferior officers having made a fire, for it was cold, stood and warmed themselves: and there stood Peter with them, and warmed himself. The high-priest then questioned Jesus concerning his disciples, and respecting his doctrine. Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I always taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews resorted; and in secret have I spoken nothing. Why dost thou question me? ask those who have heard me, what I have spoken to them: lo, they know what I said. As he was thus speaking, one of the servants who stood by him gave Jesus a slap on the face, saying, Dost thou answer the high-priest in this fashion? Jesus replied to him, If I have spoken in an improper manner, bear witness of the evil deed: but if properly, why strikest thou me? Now Annas had sent him bound to Caiaphas the high-priest. Meanwhile Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. Then said they to him, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not. One of the servants of the high-priest, being a kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, Did I not see thee in the garden with him? Then again Peter denied: and instantly the cock crew. Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium: and it was early: and they themselves went not into the praetorium, that they should not be defiled; but that they might eat the passover. Pilate then came out to them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man? They answered and said to him, If this fellow had not been a malefactor, we should not have delivered him up to thee. Pilate then said to them, Take him yourselves, and according to your own law judge him. The Jews then said to him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death: that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, intimating by what manner of death he should die. Pilate therefore entered again into the praetorium, and called Jesus, and said to him, Art thou the king of the Jews? Jesus answered him, Dost thou speak this from thyself, or did others speak to thee concerning me? Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thy own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee to me: what hast thou done? Jesus replied, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom had been of this world, then would my servants have struggled hard, that I should not have been delivered up to the Jews: but now my kingdom is not from hence. Then said Pilate unto him. Art thou not a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. For this end I was born, and for this I came into the world, that I should be a witness for the truth. Every one who is of the truth heareth my voice. Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And having thus spoken, he went out again unto the Jews and saith to them, I find no fault in him. But ye have a custom, that I should release to you one person at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews? Then again they all clamoured, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

Then Zaccheus standing up, said unto the Lord, Behold, the half of my goods, Lord, I give unto the poor; and if I have got any thing from any man, by laying false informations, I am ready to restore fourfold. Then said Jesus unto him, To-day is salvation come to this house, because that he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do good on the sabbath days. Then saith he to the man, Stretch out thy hand; and he stretched it out, and it was restored, sound as the other.
Then the ruler of the synagogue, indignant, that on the sabbath Jesus had performed the cure, addressing himself to the multitude, said, There are six days in which work is to be done: on these therefore come and be cured, and not on the sabbath-day.
