Are you not become associates with infidels? but what affinity is there between virtue and vice? and what communication has light with darkness?

In the mean time thousands of people being gather'd about him, so as to trample upon one another, he first address'd himself thus to his disciples, beware of the corrupt doctrine of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

take care then, that what the prophets predicted may not happen to you,

you should not drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of demons: you should not be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of demons.

for by the observation of the law no one shall be justified in his sight, since it is the law that takes cognizance of sin.

the law was introduc'd, that the greatness of the fall might fully appear; but the more sin display'd its enormity, the divine favour was so much the more transcendent.

was it then good that brought death upon me? no, but it was sin, that sin might show it self by being able to bring death upon me by means of that which is good; that sin, I say, by the commandment might appear to be exceedingly destructive.

"To what purpose then was the law?" it was added as a check to transgressors, till the offspring should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels with the intervention of a mediator.

so that the law was our school-master to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

it being plain, that the law was not design'd against the just, but against the lawless and refractory, against irreligion and vice, impiety and prophaneness, parricide and man-slaughter, against licentiousness and unnatural passion, against men-stealers, lyars, perjured persons, and every thing that is inconsistent with the salutary doctrine of the gospel of immortality, which the blessed God committed to my trust.

and glorify God in the times of distress. be subject therefore, for the Lord's sake to every human establishment: whether it be to the king, as supreme; or to governors, as being deputed by him to punish those who do ill,

be not deceived, God will not be mocked: for what a man soweth, that shall he also reap: he that soweth to his vices, shall reap the deadly fruit of his vices; but he that sows to the spirit, shall of the spirit reap everlasting life.

tribulation and anguish to every one that doth evil, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile.

however by your impenitence, and the insensibility of your heart, you treasure up for yourself wrath against the day of wrath, and of the revelation of the righteous judgment of God,

for the wages of sin is death: but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
